Probably the same car above (second from left) , in the picture of the Rampur Garages, ca 1911. A similar car was supplied to Rajkot at the same time. Do not know if either survive.

I believe it was a 6 cylinder, 28 H.P. The placement was midship between the driver and passenger seats.

The picture below shows the placement on the Rewa Lanchester, 38 H.P. 1912, sold by Bonhams within the last year or so.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

A special Cadillac was built in 1959 by/for GM Canada for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II (GB). It had a plexiglas top. It was later used also by the late President John F. Kennedy and his wife. Many photos are available in the "Cadillac Database" that I created in the 90s and donated to the Museum & Research Centre of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club in 1999.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Does someone have recent information (photos) of this Cadillac V-16 auto that went from the London Motor Show, in 1930, to the Maharadja of Bahwalpur. I see it was being restored (in Pakistan?) in 2012 (YouTube links attached):

The 1930 V-16 # 702298 , Sports Saloon body by Van den Plas Belgium, is in Lahore, Pakistan under going restoration. It is mechanically restored and working perfectly. The vacuum pump for the fuel system needed attention, now working. The Vacuum brake booster has been given new diapharam ( M/s Steele rubber USA) and the six rubber engine mounts are being changed. The engine is see-sawed on the middle mounts to change the front and rear mounts. Easier said than done.
The only challenge is the fabrication out of brass, the original pot metal door handles, which are beyond repair having deteriorated. These were selected by Vanden Plas from 1930 Buick ( i.e GM design) as these are not simple attachments like in Rolls Royce but screw in the door receptacles. Good for the day but did not last 86 years.
The wood, which is out of this world, has been taken out and the car is being made ready for the paint booth. The chrome is ok but radiator shell has some superficial rust on one spot. The radiator shell and the grand W&B head lamps will need to be sent abroad for restoration they deserve. I am trying to find a good plating establishment, in USA.

We have driven it around and it beats our RR Phantom and the 1929 Packard by miles, mainly because of the synchromesh 2nd and 3rd gears. The car drives off in 2nd and an effortless modern car level shift to 3rd is all that is needed.
If, in modern terms, the RR Phantom is a 5 door Pajero, the Packard a Toyota 5 door Prado, this is the Toyota Land cruiser in size comparison and heft on the road.

Good that this magnificent machine found a caring home. The only one of the original three or four, still on the subcontinent

Please do share some snaps . Have you tried making the handles on a CNC machine ? Might give a good finish also and helps you choose a better grade metal.

A good plater is also there in India

Cheers

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

I have posted some pics of the Bahawalpur Cadillac V-16 # 702298 in the thread Cars of HH Nawab Sadiq Abbasi...., in response to Travencore, Kasli and veesixteen. I have a lot of pics of the car being systematically stripped of chrome and wood interior in preparation for paint but it would not be of general interest.
If any one has any special interest to examine any detail of this car then I can post that pic or information.
Travencore is requested to use his immense resources to find more pictures of this fabulous car.

We all know that the Patiala Maybach was rebodied, and then subsequently sold of.

Now a dealer advertisement has appeared in a German Magazine, maybe a few others as well, offering this car for sale. The advert goes like this:

Maybach DS8 Zeppelin Cabriolet, 1933, present from the German Government of that time to the Maharaja of Patiala, the most exclusive vehicle of the times, concourse.

Notice that they don't mention that it has been rebodied.

Here is also a photo of the car when she was in India, taking part in an event.

Cheers Harit

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Credits to Shakarpura Raj for all the matter and pictures.

Quote:
Rulers of Shakarpura also known as Bahadurpur Raj are one of the oldest clans of Ujjainiya Parmar rajputs.

Raja Ishraj Singh Dev was granted mansabdari of the 574 sq.miles of Farakia region and several other parganas till north Bhagalpur in north bihar, by Emperor Jehangir and hence the Jagir came to be known as “Farakia Raj” and subsequently in 1632 AD Emperor Shah Jehan granted Sanad for the title of Raja to his grandson Raja Laxmi Chand Shah and the rulers were addressed as “Farakia Naresh”.

Ancestors first settled in a place called Parihara and later shifted capital to Shankarpur (which was recorded as Shakarpura in British settlement records).

Thanks for the pics. I believe the Bilkha car is a Humber.

The RR is an ex-Viceroy car (69TW), later Raja of Monghyr / Munger.

I am told that this Buick Tourer was part of the Idar/Himmatnagar fleet. Wonder if it survives.
