Found on Gallica.
Maharajah of Patiala seen in Paris 1925 entering his Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, I believe #18KG?

Patiala 18KG did have the coach lamps on the B-Pillar (seen here through the windshield). Also had the horizontally split windshield glass.

So Boybentley may be on to something! Thanks

Incidentally, Bahawalpur RR PI 92-YC "Boudoir" was almost identical

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Speculation.
First, the Maharaja stuns the poor Tiger with a bright red, white tyred Rolls.

Next step? Whilst the poor chap is stunned looking at the fire engine coloured Rolls, Position him in alignment with the machine gun, then gun his legs down. ( for those of us who remember, earlier she was sporting a cannon, now replaced with a machine gun)

Third step, take one of the many guns, shoot him in the chest.

Last step? Use the pistol to deliver the Coupe De Grace in the head.

What a joke!! But then, after seeing some Shikar cars in India why not this?

With imports opened up, maybe some new age pseudo Maharaja will buy this car and we will see it at the next Cartier show, entered in the Shikar class, ( with provenance)

( Reference post number 1875. )

Isn't this a RR armored carrier?

I'll move this post appropriately if it isn't. Experts?

In all likelyhood it could be, though there were similar vehicles built on various other chassis too, like Crossley and Daimler.

Most likely a RR Silver Ghost. Check the twin rear wheels, and the hubs. Most noticable (did anyone notice?) is the absense of a gun turret. This seems to be a personal carrier with slots for shooting through. The bearer looks very Maharaja-ish, maybe a Maharaja was sold this device for his personal armoured protection. Check this blue print of a typical carrier, taken from http://www.the-blueprints.com/bluepr...-r/25814/view/

There were others like Chevy trucks, Basharatu had posted some superb images on the nostalgic thread, military related snaps.

To quell / allay any doubts about what the armoured car is:

At least now, the location is certain; if not the identity of the car - I stick to Nanpara 6YC.

The more I look at the front wings, the more I think this is another car (i.e. not 6YC or 16HC). I still think it is a Windovers but more probably 18AL which was a Nanpara car - which fits the reg'n number.

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

I traced this historic photograph of an RR being stripped & scrapped at the Haji seth's fabled S. A. Karim Old Iron & Motor Parts shop in Afzal Gunj, Hyderabad-Deccan. He is believed to have scrapped no less than 13 Rolls Royces at the time. A deeply disturbing sight indeed!

They apparently had retained all the chassis plaques but eventually misplaced the box that had them !!

This is a fantastic photo, documenting what has happened to most of the old cars all over India. Mumbai Chor Bazar has also dismantled many great cars, I know of a Delahaye, and an Alfa Romeo. Cadillacs, Packards etc were common fodder.
Now if all the cars had been saved, there would be no space to keep them. And cars around today would not be so valuable. As the cars became old, spares, tyres were an issue, then mechanics became unavailable, cars with big chassis became busses, truck, tow trucks etc. Some of them like a Ford Model T became difficult to drive, people forgot how to drive them.

Karim's did have about 13 plates, but all were not chassis plates, so one cannot say that he definitely scrapped 13 RR's.
This is a sad sight, and hence surviving RR's are now more valuable.

No cheers for this, but never the less a fabulous photo.

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

A nice piece appeared in the Automobile magazine profiling car collector Colin Crabbe who toured the world collecting 300 rare classics from far off countries. This extract mentions his Indian experiences.
