They over-heated from too much "hot air".

Re: Lagonda cars in India

Thanks for the welcome KPS!
The Lagonda club have been very helpful and I am very hopeful that driving of these cars becomes less complicated in future.
The car now has black mudguards, acetylene generator and horn fitted within the engine bay as per original.

Re: Lagonda cars in India

A 1934 M45 Lagonda M45 which was in Nagaland, then Assam then Kolkata where it received a dreadful body without a wood frame at all. Now it is in better shape. It will soon have a proper hood with its hood irons which will be fitted. Could be worse for an ex saloon.....

I had posted this on the VCCCP FB page and these are some of the replies

Ex Taj Mohammad Khan of Badrishi. Parked in his house Taj Palace in Lahore, near race course. The Palace was demolished decades ago. The building housing The current National Defence college in New Delhi was originally built by Taj Mohammad Khan and then sold to the British India govt and later on was the British High Commission.

The registration is correct for 1969 Lahore

re-registered before being exported, the previous registration, if I remember correctly was PR, Peshawar.

Let me add my two cents worth.
In 1984 I briefly met a Mr Baker, a motor engineer recommended to my late father for carrying out some repairs on the family Opel Rekord who, apparently was connected with this Lagonda back in the day.

I heard about this not from him but his no 2 a few years later who by then was the principal mechanic for my Datsun 240Z.

He mentioned the car by name and the fact that the front wheel covers moved WITH the tyres as you turned them. The amazing thing is I recall him saying that it had very low mileage.

He also told me that the vehicle was sent out of Pakistan 15/ 20 years ago which sort of coincides with the 1969 time line. Tbh, I dismissed as a yet another tale of Old Car folklore but somehow have always ended up mentioning this car in classic car discussions over the years.

Baker was an American who had settled down in Lahore for a number of years. His workshop was situated in an old bungalow in Lahore where he lived. He also had a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, probably 1923/5, with a cumbersome formal body that he shipped back to the US around mid 70's.

I was told about this car in the early 1980’s by my friend Jahanzeb who actually saw the car outside a shipping company waiting to be shipped out of Pakistan in the late 1970’s.

Mr. R.N. Seth from India also told me about this car and he also mentioned a Duesenberg in Lahore that he had seen it before partition
Thanks to the VCCCP friends, the Lahore connection is established, also some info from NDC website about Tej Muhammad Khan of Badarshi.

Quote:
The NDC is housed in Bunglow No 6, Tees January Marg (Previously known as Al suquerque road belonged to Khan Saheb Tej Muhammad Khan of Badarshi, Naushera in NWFP. He had built this mansion in 1935 for his own comfort and to entertain his business associates and friends. The house was majestically built on Victorian Architecture with Viceregal splendor.
Now, only if we could also establish the Jammu & Kashmir connection.

cheers
Kartik

The car and the palatial house " Rose Palace" belonged to Khan Bahadur Taj Muhammad Khan of Badrishi ( Frontier province ). His other house in New Delhi was at 6, Tees Jan Marg, which was at one time the British High Commission and is now the National Defence College. He was a civil contractor and horse race lover. The house in Lahore was sold off in 1972 and sadly it was demolished.
No idea of what happened to that Lagonda, I will try to get in touch with his son and see if it has survived.
Just realised that this was posted in 2008, and after 13 years we have the picture of the same car.

This is likely the car Alvis talks about. The description says that the Maharaja of Jawhar owned it second hand between the 1940s and 1967 (translation below).

"The history of the vehicle is fully documented and begins with the famous actor Sir Ralph Richardson, who had it registered for the first time in London on April 28, 1939. A few years later, the car came to the Maharadja of Jawhar before Alan Heard acquired the vehicle in 1967 and only sold it to a collector in Germany a few years ago. In addition to all receipts and invoices, lovingly kept diaries complement the history of this Lagonda down to the last detail."

It is known that Jawhar did buy a 1949 6-cylinder Lagonda 2.5L (Registered UMD-193) when a law student in England. He was supposedly taking the car back to India. This was supposedly the first post-war Lagonda made.

This is a sister car to the Bhogilal V12, mine is not a Drophead Coupe, its a Rapide Coupe, which for all practical purposes is a two seater, as against the four seat Drophead Coupe. Though the Rapide was also classified as a 3+1 seater in period Lagonda ads, whith three abreast on the front bench seat, and one on a small detachable folding seat behind the front seat, which was actually for luggage, since the trunk contains the spare wheel. the drophead coupe has a real trunk, with one sidemounted spare and tools etc in the second dummy sidemount compartment.

Re: Lagonda cars in India

This is a Rapide Coupe, as compared to a Drophead coupe, a very different bodystyle. it also has a folding wind shield.

What is likely to be the same car when in Kagal. Note the sidemounts and centre spot light match, compared to the Baroda car which has different features.

The Jawhar Lagonda finds another mention here in this 1954 issue of Cars magazine. In this image it appears to be still in England. Note however no sidemounts.
