Yes that is correct. This car use to belong to Mr. B K Burman who was one of the longest serving MD of Castrol. Castrol was one of the foremost sponserers of VCCCI Rally about 10-15 years back. Remember I having attened one of them which kickoffed from Brabourne Stadium (about 1982-83 year). Mr. Burman's car use to inevitebly end of winning each year. Must say it was immaculately maintained and every screw in the vehicle was original.

That's the XJ Series 3. It must have a 4.2L engine. The XJ never came with 4.7L whether in 6cyl, 8cyl or 12cyl format.
I did a Jag XJ special thread some time ago.

Well it has been discussed as an SS100 hence I call it that. It looks strange to me too, with that style of radiator and mudguards. But Im not Jaguar expert.

Could this be a 1934 SS1 which was followed by the SS90 in 1935 and eventually the SS100 in 1936?

Take a look at these pictures of a similar car

I am inclined to believe the Chennai Jag TMC 21 is a 1934 SS1 like the car above, and not a SS100 as commonly believed

Well that confirms that this is not the SS100. Now one needs to ascertain if its a 37 SS 2 1/2 litre tourer or an earlier car like the 1934 SS1

Yes its a later SS Jaguar Tourer 2 1/2 litre
Its the same body ( almost ) as the SS 1 tourer but with the
later chassis & OHV engine. SS cars had 105 SS1 tourer bodies left
which they fitted to the later 35 chassis in 36/37. Serial nos
19001 to 19105 . My car is 19102

Thanks for clearing that up Harry. Time permitting may I request you to share some more info on the SS series and how the legendary SS100's came into being. Jaguars are indeed such special cars. I once drove a Mark V and still haven't had enough of that delicious six. Someday hopefully I'll get my hands on a XK or an SS100

I havn't seen the pics of the film actor Jackie Shroff SS100's before, I would love to be able to identify this car by its chassis number and I would also love to get further details on the other car in south india
thanks greatly or posting
Terry,

The white Jag was restored by Shashi Kanoria here in Calcutta quite a few years back and was sold to Mittal along with a number of other exceptional cars.

The red SS I understand was initially a sedan that Kanoria had started to convert to a SS-1 similar to the one Mittal purchased. P. S. Bose purchased it a number of years back as a rough shell and has done an remarkable job bring it back to life. You might say it is a hi-bred at this point.

I had supplied him photos of a 38 SS-1 that was the JCNA National Champion with 99+pts. in the early 2000s when I saw it at one of the US JCNA Concours we were competing in with our 68 MK11-340 in both Championship Class 9 & Preservation Class 18. In correspondence with the Daimler- Jaguar Heritage Trust they advised me that they have no SS-1 registered from India and asked that I assist them in tracking any here.

I hope to contact the Mittal group here at tomorrows Statesman Rally and check out the serial numbers.

Have you been in contact with them re any pre-war Jags? If not they would be grateful for any information you could provide.

Will have to pick up your book if I can.

Look forward to hearing from you.
