1920 Chevrolet 490

I was recently on holiday in Assam and discovered this seeming well restored 1920 is Chevrolet 490. The owner was out of town so I could not get any details at all as the rest of the family was not interested in thevehicle at all!!

Rmonie the car belongs to my friends cousin. It has historic value attached to it. Apparently it was used by Shri Subash Chandra Bose for his travel in the region. These very same pictures have been doing their rounds in mails as well. I have recieved them twice already.

Absolutely correct. There is a Mr Bose listed as one of the owners. The present owner (a ffamily friend hence the access to the car) is based out of Guwahati. I spoke to him earlier today and he has promised to send more details about the vehicle as he has the original RC etc., but this will take some time as he is off the net!!

There are a bunch of other pictures of the entire restore as well which will be shared as soon as I get them.

Check my posts on cars in Guwahati and Shillong.

You should be able to contact members of the Antique Clubs there and they should be able to fill you on some of the details.

Some great cars up there!

Dear Solan,

Welcome to Team-BHP and it is very nice to have a enthusiast from Norway on board.

Your cars are indeed wonderful and quality of restoration is excellent. What are this history of these cars?

On the 1916 you have indicators on the left? I guess it must be compulsory to have indicators in Norway. Which year did this particular piece come? The hood is also very different as there is a rod in the middle over the door. Is this rod fixed to the hood?

Can you post pictures of the engine and dash please?

Cheers

Chevrolet 1916/490, Touring, RHD

Thanks. I bought this car in 2002 from Brisbane, Australia. It was assembled at the Tarrytown plant/New York Early in April 1916, shipped out 04. 29. and arriving in Sydney 09.15. together with around 340 other Chevrolets on board "Florence Luckenbacher", luckily escaping the German subs. A farmer in Melbourne bought it, bu after only three years a new 490 came to the farm, leaving the first to stay in the barn most of the time.

Around 1952 it was sold to a Museum and somewhat restored, and sold some later for a better restoration. I am the fifth owner, as far as I know.

As I want to drive my cars more than to exhibit them I have been able to get it upgraded technically to a reasonably safe standard.

I have to come back in a day or two for more of the stories. Good night!

By the way: The green car is a Chevrolet from 1926 (Superior), and not a 490 which was made from late 1915 untill 1922, and of a different type. You see a lot of differencies from my 490 to the green car.

Re: 1920 Chevrolet 490

Sorry for being far too busy to follow up here. Here is the story of Petrine:

http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/sto...ling_1931.html

We have made journeys to Nuremberg, Bristol, Sweden and many places in Norway, as fas as Narvik. As our boys have not the big feeling for old cars we had to sell Petrine in May 2011. She is still driving as an "advertising" for a transport company south west of Oslo.

Will write some more about Solan, our Chevrolet 1916 later.

Rusted spares of a 1922 Chevrolet Six Sedan, belonging to a Nawab of Hyderabad that I clicked recently. The car had mechanical brakes and was powered by a six cylinder side valve engine. Its chassis (not clicked) is rusted and corroded. The body was decayed and has disappeared, while its rear portion (beyond the rear door) survives. There is some wood at its base. There is a likelihood of this car getting restored as it has been bought by a workshop owner.
