Here is an article that appeared in 'Indian Auto', October 1992 featuring the Mallya De Dion. The car remains more or less the same way today too.

This car was in Chennai in the early 1980's along with a Jeep. And not working. Picked up by Mallya at that time, but never working. Actially DeDion parts and engines are available, should not be difficult to get her moving. She is a 1906.
Many years ago this car was displayed at a vintage car show at Nehru Science center, that was the only time I actually saw that car. Hope she gets going soon.

Cheers harit

Re: Earliest Cars seen in India - Veteran and Edwardian

Here is a lovely shot from Delhi, courtesy oldphotos.in. Can anyone identify the car? Registration is black letters on white plate, correct for Delhi. Reads '36' - which at the time could probably simply mean that this was the 36th car in Delhi.

Liege(Belgium): This morning there was the Great War Centenary Parade, a procession of more than 40 Edwardian cars. All of these would have been on the road during the First World War. Prince Michael of Kent and 50 Chelsea Pensioners took part in the Central London event.

This superb image was shared by a friend, allegedly with one Jeff Blair in Bombay, 1905.

The car has been identified as a 1905 l'Elegante - I have never heard of one before.

Re: Earliest Cars seen in India - Veteran and Edwardian

In the past I had written on the resuscitation of the 1903 Renault by Sripathy. I felt it is important to post that link here
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/pre-wa...ml#post1682591

The picture of the car post restoration with the then owner Mr. Papanna and Mr. Sripathy. This car is now in the Manjusha Museum at Dharmasthala.

Interesting question regarding the year of this image. I'd say it was somewhere around 1949. The cars were parked at a trade show for cottage and big industries. I believe the location could be either Bombay or Delhi.

The first image shows a small banner for an upcoming show of the movie Barsaat (1949) for 31May:

Polson as a brand was doing good in the years leading up to 1949 after which Amul was brought in:

Among other displays at the same exhibition was a stall for Hind cycles Made in Bombay and a Murphy radio display announcing their "made in India" radios.

Here's the exact text:

In a postcard of around 1920 showing the Gateway of India, these cars were seen. I focused on the cars leaving out the rest of the pic as they were really tiny.

Probably misquoted as a Maharaja Rolls. The gentleman in the picture looks quite Indian:

Re: Earliest Cars seen in India - Veteran and Edwardian

This early car was located in Mhow, Central India, as evident from the writing on the album page.
