re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

Wow! Yet another addition to the list of rules that help fill the coffers of Bangalore police. I am yet to see full compliance and enforcement of the mandatory-helmet rule and now this.

So far the police could look and figure out head or helmet, then stop and fine. Now either they need to have highly specialised skill of identifying the right helmet or take this as a license to go rampant and stop any two wheeler.

What a windfall for BTP!

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

How difficult would it be for manufacturers like MT, LS2, SOL to get ISI certification in addition to DOT, ECE, Sharp etc. certifications. If ISI standard is of self-certification like DOT or ECE, manufacturers only need to apply to BIS and can then paste the stickers themselves. Since ISI standards are not stricter than their foreign counterparts, this sould be a simple process. A small price to pay for complete peace of mind and one less point for cops to harass the motorcyclists.

Nothing but local protectionism and money making
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-ta...rade#Standards

Quote:
Standards take a special place among non-tariff barriers. Countries usually impose standards on classification, labeling and testing of products in order to be able to sell domestic products, but also to block sales of products of foreign manufacture. These standards are sometimes entered under the pretext of protecting the safety and health of local populations.

Yes. Just came here to post the same. This is ridiculous. My poor quality Vega is legal as against my HJC and MT as per these guys now.

I have a feeling the Indian helmet manufactures are lobbying for this.

Section 230 of Karnataka Motor vehicles act has prescribed what a protective headgear must be. This is where it specifies the exact ISI number and this is exactly what the police is enforcing.

Off-topic but going by this rule, if there is no reflective tapes horizontally pasted, you can be fined.

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

Any lawyers on the forum here? I have been receiving a lot of messages from enthusiasts and people alike that the only way to counter this harebrained move is to go legal. So needed suggestion whether a writ petition, a PIL or an RTI would be the way forward?

CMVR is of year 2010. MVA is of 1988. We're in 2018. I believe that we need to be in tune with the time and not just go by the letter written in the past.

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

It is really depressing that the same people who enforce this rule and others do it just so it is more money in the coffer for them.

The rule says so, but there should be exceptions for the same especially when they enforce rules from the rule book according to their whims and fancy, some many years later like lightening struck them.

My DOT certified helmet is just over a year old and I need to go ISI helmet shopping now when my head is going to be much safer in a DOT helmet.

All this courtesy idiots who don't wear helmets of any description themselves, or the white hat at best, which they've begun fining others for.

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

All that it may need is some kind of a homologation vis-a-vis the ISI. If the ISI spec is matched against, say, DOT, it could serve as being equivalent.

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

Just another ploy to get money out of the sensible riders out there. I'm pretty sure locals / squids / women (not to generalise, but just my observation) won't be targeted who will never wear a helmet, let alone an ISI one. Its people like us who will be targeted and the cops will either take a bribe or fine us. And given their cheeky nature will comment later that 'you learned folks should know better'.

Its just that we are so helpless over such illogical rules. Just yesterday I was stuck for 30 mins when people of a certain belief burnt tyres on the Sion-Panvel highway blocking traffic on both sides and damaging the road surface over an unreleased movie. Sorry to say, but is it time to get out of India for good?

re: Only ISI Helmet, says Bangalore Traffic Police. EDIT: Order reintroduced

But in Karnataka i hope they atleast use ISI helmets. I see construction helmets, casual hats and even AAP Cap used as make shift helmets and every where around Bangalore.

So if this helps to atleast make them wear ISI helmet I will be happy to not put ISI sticker over the DOT helmet of mine.

Honestly this is a sensible solution, given the bureaucracy involved.

Thankfully the people responsible for responding to this are the same ones responsible for updating this archaic rule -- so chances are it will be a long time before they respond
