Thanks Rk_sans.

That was quick, now I will start looking at the options available in my city.

One more question.

Are the inner linings and cheek pads removable?

No, they are not. Only the visor is removable

re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Looking to replace my VEGA Helmet.Budget 2.5-3k. Had a query.

Does the LS2 helmet fit in the Activa dicky as VEGA helmet does and it's really convenient.

re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Maybe a seemingly stupid query, my helmet which i bought about two years ago is in very good condition (inner lining, pads etc because i wear a skull cap which keeps the inner lining even mostly) but my friend tells me that helmets have to be replaced every two or so years because the outer shell starts to weaken and may not be as effective during a crash.

Though i do agree on the wear and tear part due to continued usage, how valid is this suggestion? Do folks change their helmets every two-three years?. Any rule of thumb?.

Helmets need to be changed every 5 years from the date of mfg. A sticker with the mfg date (month and year) is generally present on the inner lining of helmets.

^^ +1 to that

We follow the same norm in Industry ; I broke my Co. helmet with a hammer after getting a new one issued ; the stuff gets brittle with time

re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I recently bought a Vega LS2 open face helmet, just like the Ninja.
Its one of the most comfortable helmets, especially if you want to log distances on the highways etc. It even comes with a chin cover feature which dos not allow any air to enter the helmet from your chin, making the helmet unstable at high speeds. Costs around 5k, if you can bargain well, it can be around 4.5k.
Honestly, its the bets buys among all the helmets that I recently scrutinized.

I am guessing this is if the helmet has not been dropped ever.

I was under the impression that even if the helmet was dropped from your hand, it needed to be changed since the shell would have become weak. Is this correct..? Am on the verge of changing the helmet since it has been 2 years since I bought mine n it has seen the asphalt and concrete 4 times when carrying it in my hand.

Helmets carry the One Impact rule. A single impact can compromise the structural integrity of the shell. Better to buy a new one.

If its been dropped onto a hard surface then its better not to use the helmet... if you should, use it for short rides around the block like shopping for groceries, etc.

Thanks Aditya. Thought as much since I remembered an earlier post where i was suggested to change the helmet since it was dropped on the road. It is currently doing only shopping duty and I am on the verge of picking up a new lid.

Completely disagree. This is for all those who cant let an old helmet go (there are a lot of these people out there). One shouldnt be using a helmet that isnt as strong as it should be for short errands, runs to the neighbourhood shop. Indians have this unfortunate mentality that safety can be compromised in the interests of convenience when it comes distance covered on bike rides. My friends refuse to wear a helmet if the distance is a couple of kms. And those who have old helmets that have been dropped more times than the Indian batting team has collapsed continue to use the same one.

The stupid driver who might swerve in front of you without warning isnt going to stop himself and say "Hold on, this guy is out for a short spin and has also not worn his helmet / is wearing his spare not so good lid. Let me not swerve into his path"

The guy who is walking across the road without looking left or right while talking on his mobile phone isnt going to stop himself and think "There just might be someone who isnt wearing his good helmet since he is out for a short spin. Hence let me look left and right before crossing the road"

Just let that old helmet go.

@Gearon I don't think the LS2 would fit in the Activa boot. LS2 range usually has pretty big, but light weight helmets.

re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I am looking to buy a helmet.
debating between a Vega moto-cross black and LS2 phobia grey.
It needs to go with me riding a Yamaha Rx135 full black, with raised handle bar.

Can anyone tell me what will be the cost of both the helmets in Chennai.
Which is the best place to shop for helmets in Chennai?

Does any one use a Bell helmet? They come with self tinting visors, its so cool. You don't need to carry a separate one.

Arai helmets come with double/triple impact zones as there is no guarantee that post hitting a surface, you won't roll down & hit another the second or third time.

re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I have asked this question here before, but it remains unanswered. Where in India can I get a motorbike helmet for my 5 year old son?
Just to clarify, he already has a bicycle helmet so I am not looking for that.
