Even with all the bells and whistles in your car, if you do not buckle up, you get a head injury! Seems like both the front riders made their mark in the windshield!

Couldnt the impact itself caused the glass to shatter?

No way! Do not think that an impact will cause such a damage as below:

Aren't those airbags that are inflated and seem to have some blood stains on them?

Looks like the perfect marking made by the driver & passenger. No seatbelts, and the glass shows the picture.
How did this happen?

Some time ago there was a thread than mentioned that 4 humans were killed in Montero. They were related to school and IIRC, one of them was principal of a school in which the thread starter studied.
Is this montero related to that crash ?

EDIT : I am talking about this thread :
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/street...-4-killed.html

Is this the same car ?

No. The date on these snaps is march 2008 (or November 2008 if american style). The accident that you are talking about happened in january 2009.

Terrible knock on the Montero. I bet the front occupants weren't wearing any seatbelts. Why isn't there a proper registration plate on the car (front + rear)?

I thought the Airbags wouldn't deploy if the occupants weren't buckled up? Or have they changed that now?

Depends on how the system has been designed to work. In some cars airbags will only deploy if you are wearing seat belts and in some it will not. Also on some cars they work by pressure sensors in the seat. If the passenger seat is not occupies then the passenger airbag will not deploy.

Thats some whack -for that kind of damage. With the front right-side completely caved in and the rest of the car intact, it encountered either a larger vehicle or an obscure tree.

Most of the accident pics i see on this thread emphasize one big important factor- Wearing seat belts specially if you are sitting in front. Sadly many of us are still not learning from it(myself included as many times i ignore that however after seeing the accidents on this thread do try to wear it as much as i can).

One Q- If the airbags were deployed how come the driver and passenger hit the windshield. Imo they should have been blocked by the airbags. The only logic i can see is impact was so great and they were not wearing seat belts(as evident from pic) so inspite of airbags they had hit windshield.
