re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

She works for the same shady corporation whose son not so long ago, crashed into a car in Mumbai, then ran away and the matter was hush hushed with the car owner getting a bigger ride to wish away the case. Knowing the ethics of this corporation, we can surely expect the media ruckus to stop within a week, as is we are seeing the woman's organization name being changed to a 'large corporation', and she worked in an 'executive capacity' and all other mindless jargon.

When the heat dies down, she will get released on bail, and in a couple of months will start her drunken journeys once again....

What will happen to the taxi driver and passengers? Well they are poor people residing in Bhendi Bazaar, so they will be bullied, coaxed and bribed a little into withdrawing the case, if they decide to stick it out, they will be maligned, where were the seat belts, what speed was the taxi doing etc etc... and the case will drag on...

Not everyone drive to bars. Some walk, some take public transport, some are driven by others. Not everyone coming to bars drink alcohol either - Some are teetotallers, some are designated drivers etc.

It's most probably an Eeco/Versa, with the front crumpled in the impact and reduced to an Omni-like face

I believe Maruti still sells Omni Cargo.
This taxi being from the very old batches of Omni are very dangerious from a passenger vehicle perspective, especially a Taxi
They sell, because there is demand. Nothing else is as nimble and economical as the venerable Omni, for last mile connectivity with some luggage. Yes, it's far from safe, but do we really care in India?

Just wondering how safe are vehicles like Omni, Winger, Evalia, etc etc, which have no bonnet space ? Even if a biker rams into the vehicle, this could cause a good damage to the front occupants !
Except Omni, the others do have a bonnet and front crumple zone. Evalia is the NV200 sold abroad, with pretty much the same structure. Winger is the previous generation Renault Traffic's body with Tata underpinnings. Again, safer than an Omni that does not have any front structure that can protect the occupants.

Do spare a thought to the boot region as well.
Most of the MUVs have three seats at the back. Effectively, the passengers are seated in the crumple zone! Wonder how effective the crash bars at the rear are, as they form the only protection in case of an impact from the rear!

The fact that she is a lawyer implies she will definitely find some loop hole or the other and walk out of the case. Lawyers need not be told about this.
The taxi occupants are the one to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Take salman khan's case. Questions were asked as to why the labourers slept on the footpath. Similarly in this case questions will be asked as when the Audi car was being driven fast (on the wrong side of the road), the taxi should have taken evasive action.

There is no need to expand any further, as this snippet sums up everything.

If they decide to stick on, they will be permanently disabled. These are the kind of incidents that cause people to end up as ultras and what not - those with money can get away with anything.

sad as it is, this how things work in our country. how many such cases have happened and what has been done about it? nothing. Salman's case is the best example - killed people and started Being Human; we still wear those t-shirts and still watch his movies. sad.

c'est la vie

I completely agree with you. But taxi operators make money by buying cheap cars. In our country cheap is a antonym with safety and a taxi operator will never give preference to safety against profit. Come to think of it, how can we expect a safe yellow-black cabs when there is no radio cabs that have ABS and airbags?

Things won't change unless there is a statutory norm that will prevent unsafe car for plying on the roads.

Moreover, this lady was out to kill or die. Things could be worse if she had collided with an auto rickshaw with four passengers or if she had driven over people sleeping on the footpaths.

Driving drunk on the wrong side of the road should be treated as attempt to murder and the culprits must pay for it for rest of their lives.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

She has said 'she's done it before and that she will call when she reaches home'. Why is this not charged with intent to murder.

She definitely knew what being drunk does to a person and she was willing to drive the car despite the objection of her friend.

IMO, all drunken driving case need to charged with intent to murder if involved in an accident. You simply don't sit in the seat and drive a car if you know you are drunk. They knew why they were drinking and cannot plead ignorance of the situation.

Time to get some sense into the Motor Vehicle Laws in our country.

One thing I object to is the posting of her picture in the news article. Either show it for all criminals or blur it for all.

..
Fact is that major Media houses like TV18, NDTV (http://www.moneylife.in/article/who-...dtv/42206.html) are already owned either directly or indirectly by big business. In such scenario what else can be expected?

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

This is outright ridiculous, note the last bit in that article:

The young woman's mother spoke to Mumbai Mirror over the phone from Srinagar. "Please treat this as an accident. It was a working day and she may have been returning from work," she said.

Its one thing to defend a close relative, but making foolish statements like this is only going to further exacerbate public opinion about her. There does not seem to be any doubt about where she was coming from.

Also other bits in the article which insist she is a "fun-loving and helpful person", is totally out of context. No one here is pointing out that she is a foul tempered shrew, the fact remains in that particular instance she was driving under influence and that action alone caused the deaths of bread-earning members of two families.

I hope the law makers can be objective about this!

Absolutely a foolish comment and that too coming from a person who is associated with MSRDC in an advisory role. Surely she herself must be advocating traffic rules, not that she could anything to her own kin.

Unless there is a strong public backlash the case will lose its steam thanks to the known lethargic attitude of Mumbai cops when it comes to high profile cases.

Now She will start helping a few desolate souls by being human and convince herself that she has paid for her sins. She is a lawyer and has complete knowledge about weaknesses of MV act. Prosecuting her is a distant possibility.

Picking hairs, but lawyers have their specialities, and if she has worked in corporate law for a long time she has probably forgotten much of what she may have only needed to pass an exam a long time ago. It doesn't matter: she will certainly know how the law works, and the technical detail will only be a phone call away.
