Driving without respecting the high center of gravity, should probably be blamed.

A 2 ton heavy, ladder on frame construction, tall truck cannot be driven around corners fast neglecting the danger of it toppling at the slightest provocation.

That said, even the Ecosport and SCross launch witnessed such incidents soon after launch. Probably just the excitement of getting a newly launched car influencing the way people drive!

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

Although ESP is supposed to prevent rollovers, that is only on flat tarmac (like in the video). In real world conditions, ESP doesn't work 100% of the time - because the vehicle might go off the road (like in this particular accident case). Once the vehicle goes off tarmac, physics takes over and a high GC heavy vehicle will roll.

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

Definitely a rollover and only one question that matters here and maybe can be the deciding factor between life and death:
Was the driver buckled up? With curtain airbags being deployed, looking at the amount of cave in at the roof and the impact on the front. Since the driver is said to have lost his life, I have my own set of doubts if the driver was buckled up at all (It made me recall that black Polo whose pic we have on the 'Seatbelts saved my life' thread). Additionally the accident also took place in Dewas; a place where people have habit of moving around with laws in their pocket.

IMO this is just an another accident involving a newly launched car that is perceived to be safe. Probably a chance of limits testing in the brand new car by the owner or some relatives; a practice that is normally done here in India. Wedding season is coming, there will be enough of such incidents involving every sort of car up here in which the car comes in form of dowry and is turned into a heap the same evening by relatives or friends of the to-be-groom.

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

I was just referring to the crash test results of Fortuner here

Please see the following on page 2, under Score Deductions.

Quote:
Score Deductions.
Deductions from frontal offset test scores
Head / neck: Unstable airbag contact for driver: 1
point from head score
Could this be the reason why the driver did not survive ?

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

Those who have driven the New Fortuner, know that the SUV can achieve serious speeds in a jiffy, especially in "Power Mode". No one can defy the laws of physics and one needs to be cautious pushing such a big truck around corners.

Modern cars come equipped with all kinds of safety gadgets and in this case the New Fortuner comes equipped with 7 Airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, TC, VSC, WIL Safe Front seats, 4 disk brakes, etc, etc, but if the driver wants to push the car beyond its limits, he/she can easily do it.

Hence, IMO, the most important safety equipment in a car is the "driver". As most of us consider ourselves as good drivers, we should take every accident that we see as a reminder to drive safe.

No, most likely driver to be blamed!

Front end is mostly intact. Most likely the airbags wouldn't have opened up.

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

It's always a sad scene to see brand new vehicles totaled!
The front right and the complete right side of the body has taken the most brunt of the impact. Possible reasons for the airbags not deploying? The car must have toppled off while taking a left bend at high speeds and hence the maximum impact on the front right and the right side. The higher centre of gravity toppled it over causing the roof to cave in.
I always wonder what makes people push brand new cars to the limits when clearly one has to break in the engine until a couple of thousand kilometers are done.
Hard earned money and hours of time spent on the production line totaled in a matter of seconds!

If it happened in Dewas it must have been the by-pass. Its a single carriageway two-lane road with sharp turns and heavy truck traffic. before and after this by-pass is either 4-lane or 6-lane roads, so drivers dont tend to get used to the narrow road.

There have been a lot of fatal accidents on this road.

The car looks quite badly smashed. Are there any crash test reports of the indian Fortuner?

Re: New Fortuner involved in fatal crash- Details Awaited

Its very difficult to pin point the exact reason of crash and type of impact on the cabin. Given that the damage is mostly on the pillars, I suspect it to be a rollover. High powered machines, not so scientifically laid down roads ( speed breakers are classic example ), uneven surfaces and traffic that thinks discipline is radioactive, all these parameters pretty much make up for a dangerous scenario.

Though the driver here may or may not be at fault, I feel the driver must be over speeding in a car that is obviously top heavy. Speed on our roads must be very controlled, and in a car new to a driver, added restraint just adds to safety. Airbags did deploy but then, they cannot make any car invincible to physics or even lack of common sense.

Lets wait for further details, but as usual human error is more likely to be reason for the crash.

Guy's stop blaming the driver. No one takes safety seriously in India. Why don't you also see from another angle as well, which could be the inherent instability of the vehicle as in the video below.

Apart from the loss of life, that's 35 Lakhs down the drain as even insurance is not done on the vehicle yet. Talk about a very bad fate.

How come? Isn't it illegal to take delivery of the vehicle without a valid insurance cover?

No number plates on the vehicle as well. Not even temporary plates. Sad.

It is illegal to deliver the vehicle without Insurance. However, what i feel is that the owner must have got the Insurance cover note from Toyota if he has insured the vehicle from Toyota while delivery. The cover note does mention the Engine and Chassis number.

Regarding the accident, what I "heard" is more shocking!

"A case of Drink and Drive"

People have the money but NOT the brains to drive responsibly.

Hope that Fortuner has not hit anyone else in the incident.

Drink and drive will immediately invalidate the insurance coverage

So even if the vehicle was insured the owner will not get one paisa from this mess.

Since this was delivered to the owner, at least a TR and insurance cover note will definitely be raised. But it really hurts to see a brand new vehicle in this state no matter how good or bad the build of the vehicle is.
