There is an extended video of the same - the pedestrian waited for a car (before the X1) to cross, and then tried to dart for it. Given reaction times, the BMW driver did what any novice driver would do - brake hard and hold on to the steering.

Unfortunately, we live in a country where we aren't taught to swerve and other evasive safety manouveres. We are taught driving in vehicles that have barely any brake power, and will probably go out of control if someone tries to swerve under hard braking.

The way he is darting across the road means he probably knew the risk he was taking. Yes - there was a delay in reaction time on part of the driver, but I am sure all of us let our guard down a little on an open road, especially with company on board.

I would say that bulk of the fault lies with the pedestrian, and a part of it with the BMW driver.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Though I would like to take the video with a pinch of salt, one thing to remember is that none of the crash tests do a 'vehicle roll-over' test. Understandably, most of the cars crumble miserably in the case of over-turns. The above video shows that the given Tata Cars stay intact in a roll-over (which is not part of the standard crash test). I feel this is also important along with the standard star-rating.

Sure. I covered that in my previous post: physics is physics, and if someone walks into that space that is less than our stopping distance, all other things being equal, there is nothing that can be done.

There is a variable within overall stopping distance: thinking time. We may be driving a supercar, with superbrakes at 40kph, but there is still the time that it takes to see, compute, decide, react, move foot to brake pedal.

Don't know if the following link has been posted earlier. Most of the accidents have occured due to negligent driving and someone else had to bear the brunt.

Came across this news from Odhisatv.in. A drag race between a BMW and Audi on the normal road sounds scary.

A Santro t-boned an Ecosport, which rolled over a few times. The airbags deployed, saving the occupants. The Santro driver sustained injuries to his head - seatbelt not fastened.

Ribbed roof! So it wasn't Swift but an Alto upon closed inspection of the picture - Tail lamps and Alto Badge.

Two Altos. The injuries were quite nasty - one dead, several with head injuries, broken bones etc in various stages of critical / serious condition.

Firstly theres is no video there, as mentioned.
It is just a compilation of still pictures.

Secondly it seems more like an ad feature / paid news article of Tata cars.

Tata cars may have improved in terms of build quality, but by no means these random pictures are any proof to illustrate that.

We can't estimate the impact or intensity of the accident, just by looking at those still pictures.
Also just because the car had turned upside down doesn't necessarily mean that the accident or impact was a very severe one.
And just because no one was injured in some minor accident doesn't necessarily mean that the car is high in terms of safety & structural strength too.
There have been cases of other incidents too, when Swifts and WagonRs have turned turtle, and none were hurt. Does that mean Swift is the safest car you can buy?

Nothing can be concluded unless we get to see a video footage of the accident, which sadly is not provided in this case.
All we get to see is a bunch of still photos.

Also the comments/captions at the end appear so childish and inappropriate.

It conveys a very wrong message when they say that lighter cars are really unsafe, and that Tata cars are heavier and hence more safer but slightly low in fuel efficiency. What nonsense!

Please don't give any false sense of safety and security to any car owners, without any proof or test results from a competent authority.
Or in case they are trying to prove it on the basis of a real-world accident, as is the case here, atleast the accident conditions and the intensity of the impact should be clear and convincing.

Don't think this was reported here:

Thought this level of callousness is BBMP's prerogative.

Happened today in Hyderabad, near vanasthalipuram. Apparently, the truck's braking system failed and it has run over 4 autorickshaws and 2 motorcycles killing two people. Very unfortunate!

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

This incident happened today in Amity University's parking lot. Two students were drag racing when one of them driving the Fortuner lost control and rammed into 4-5 cars parked there.
Luckily no one was injured.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Amazingly foolhardy and irresponsible behaviour. Narrow lanes with those shiny tiles coupled with parked cars everywhere! Could have easily resulted in fatalities to unwary pedestrians.

Hope some exemplary punishment is given.
