Any idea of the variant. Looks like this lacked ESP considering the mention of skidding and hitting. ESP IMO might have reduced the impact considerably.

Please for anyone reading this don’t buy a car without ESP. It is not worth it.

Looking at the orange accents, it is the Kia Seltos Anniversary Edition (now discontinued) which was based on the HTX variant, so did not have ESP. Only had ABS with EBD and 2 front airbags. Now from 2021 even HTX IIRC gets ESP.

Looking at the alloys, the variant is not the top most one. Fact is, only the top most variant of Kia and Hyundai vehicles are equipped with ESP.

Vaahan app confirms its a mid model without ESP or TCS.

By the description of the FB user, the car had certainly skidded off loosing traction and hit the barrier. IF ESP would have been in the place, the chances of skidding would have been controlled to en great extent.

Its boon that low volume model like Nissan Kicks, or Cheaper Magnite is offered ESP, TCS as Standard across their turbo variants.

I came to know recently that kia updated its mid range models with ESP after success of Magnite and community talking more about it.

..
Agree that having active safety features like ESP reduces the risk, however vehicles with ESP can also end up in a similar mishap.

The car in this case looks brand new. It is very common to see new cars being driven recklessly.
New car owners should take it slow and give it sufficient time to gain familiarity with a new vehicle and get a good grasp of its dynamics and limitations. This process takes time.

A vehicle may have a hundred safety features, this should not make a driver overconfident and drive rashly. All safety features comes with its own limitations.

The key to safe driving is to stay alert, be humble and leave ego at home, understand the vehicle and its limitations well and most importantly always stay within safe speeds depending on the situation.

Indeed - The damage to the sharp edge of the concrete culvert barrier and the wreckage appears to indicate that the left side of the Seltos impacted it first and that caused the shearing of the entire top and underframe. Aided no doubt by the immense kinetic energy due to the speed at the time of impact.

I do not condone rash driving or overspeeding- however that barrier seems to have presented a knife edge to the approaching vehicle that was obviously beyond control. Do we not have design standards for such barriers? Highway construction standards? Expert members requested to kindly opine.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Just Google ‘car split in half’ and you’ll find a lot of incidents. This can happen when a car driven at excessive speeds, skids and rams sideways into a pole or a tree or in this case a culvert.
The inertia in the front end is much greater due to the engine weight. This difference usually wraps the car further around whatever impacted the car in the side, causing it to split.

See this incident involving an Audi Q7 :

People travelling to Mumbai, stopped for tea at Malshej and their vehicle got totalled by a freak rockslide.
Fortunately there was nobody inside the car when tragedy struck.

Chassis was not made of paper. This is a crash involving a later model Passat that was T-boned by another Passat. The car split into 2 and all occupants survived with minor injuries.
The VW factory was not concerned and said the car was built that way as a safety feature.

Video of the Alto versus Baleno head-on collision that took place in Nagpur yesterday 11/06/2021, morning. The Baleno was being driven at a very high speed, its driver lost control and the Alto was hit. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. The injured were admitted to hospitals. The Alto door could only be opened by a gas cutter after the police came to the rescue to facilitate exit of the driver who was injured and was trapped.

That looks real bad. From the pictures the car seems to be very new and even the plastic covers from the seats have not been removed. May the deceased souls RIP and hope their family and loved ones gets the strength to overcome this.

The thread seems to have come a full circle ! There is a ford ikon from the opening post in which the front section was split from the main body of the car.

The below link gives the official account from the Police about the Seltos accident.

https://www.cardekho.com/india-car-n...ains-27289.htm

This clarifies couple of things.
  • The damage happened due to the accident and not because of action by authorities to save the victims.
  • This particular car did have ESC as was being debated in earlier posts.

Kia and Hyundai were notorious for not offering ESP on the AT variants except the Sx(o) or GTX AT. Now in the recent update Kia has started offering these from the HTC and Hyundai offers these from SX variant I believe.

Also, not all people might have the flexibility to increase their budgets for a couple of lakhs or 3 lakhs more to get these safety features.

I heard that from 2022, GNCAP is going to make ESP mandatory for a higher star rating. Good move from GNCAP.

Despite all these safety nets, people must be aware of the fact that they need to drive according to their ability, limitations of the road and vehicle. Especially road rage. Similarly overspeeding at 130-140 isn't required as the time difference to reach the destination is 30-45 min at max. Even a 1 crore car can't save if this basic tenet isn't followed.

I am 101% sure this particular variant of the Seltos doesn't get ESP.
