What the XUV500 did by swerving into another lane at the last minute instead of braking in his own lane was not the right thing to do.

But had the XUV driver panic braked in this situation, it would have definitely been rear ended as the car behind it was definitely not maintaining a safe braking distance. He would have hit anything in front of him, be it cow or XUV at his speed and following so close to the vehicle in front.

Not maintaining adequate braking distance between vehicles on our highways is the unfortunate reality on our highways. People tend to follow the vehicle in front at a close distance at high speeds.

No matter what the action of the vehicle in front will take, the driver in the vehicle behind needs to be maintaing sufficiently large distance to be able to brake and stop safely.

The only way I could do this is to maintain a speed that is 20kmph lesser than most of the faster traffic and peacefully watch them flow past acting as my VIP escort or pilot. The total journey time doesn't differ much between a vehicle whirring past 120kmph and another playing around in 80-90 kmph with good acceleration even when driving up to a 1000kms per day on our roads. The time difference might hardly be a couple of hours at the maximum which makes up for itself in higher safety, lower fuel consumption, lower stress and better assimilation of whatever is playing on the music system/head.

I guess the below scenario was at play here. There was a blind spot developing owing to the tall XUV as you were lining up to overtake the Dzire.

Obviously it is easy to pontificate with the luxury of hindsight but if you had seen the Dzire’s brake lights, you should have slowed down a little to see what sort of obstacle might be ahead. Most drivers in India are not observant and don’t react to conditions ahead in a defensive manner. Perhaps it is unreasonable to expect you to have seen these brake lights as your attention might have been focused on the XUV as well as the overtaking maneuveur. Most important advice is to drive slower and avoid needless overtakes.

Received from a friend. Seems like vehicle got sandwiched.

Accident took place of one of my colleague day before yesterday see the impact from a uncontrolled bus from behind. All the family members came out with very minor injuries. The built quality without airbags saved them. The accident took place near Khabati ghat about 80 km from Pune.

Completely agree with you on maintaining a safe distance. It is one of the golden rules to follow. But here, the XUV didn't slow down or hit the brake (which cannot be guaranteed even if the driver is aware of it). It's a panic situation and the reaction will be accordingly. I'm in no way justifying the action of XUV driver but this is something that we may also end up doing depending on the circumstances. If the XUV guy did have a clear view of what lied ahead and had enough time to make a decision but chose to ignore, then obviously it's their fault. This incident could have gone wrong in multiple ways, if you think about it. For example, even if there was no XUV in front the result could have been the same had the cow crossed the road immediately. The minimum safe distance rule won't apply here but some other rule. If everyone goes by the rule book in all adverse scenarios then the roads are a much safer place to be in .

Why are there cows on Indian roads?? Tough luck. Just goes to prove how easy it is to drive into a sticky situation on our roads - skill/experience notwithstanding. Few factors that I believe could have contributed:
1. XUV overtaking on a left curve, and completely blocking the view of the road/median ahead
2. XUV had the time to signal lane change trying to avoid the cow. Braking instead would have alerted following traffic

Couldn't make out from the footage, was your car too close to the XUV for the speeds involved?

Bright side:
0. No humans injured
1. Had the presence of mind not to swerve, else it would have been the dzire or the 'gwala'
2. Alone, so no (possibly) unbelted rear seat occupants who could have been affected by sudden braking & impact
3. The car had probably slowed down enough else the cow would have flown into the windshield
4. The mob cleared out instead of ganging up on you

I'm guessing the repair bill would be roughly 10% of purchase cost.

One of the car here seems to be the XUV700. Is it the non-ADAS version? Would ADAS have prevented this from happening in the cars that are fitted with those?

Sad to see such a new car in this shape.
