The news article doesn't mention any speed, or it might have been updated after initial reporting.

Moreover, I have driven Punch, it struggles to climb into three digit speeds and engine cries out loud. I don't think anyone would try to drive it at 130~140kmph. So, 140kmph seems like a mis-reported figure, unless it was recorded by speed camera. There are multiple speed cams on that stretch.

Given the extent of damage, the vehicle must have been driven at very high speeds. The impact has taken out RH long member, the strongest part in the structure.

A even more horrific accident in Surat where a city bus mowed down a student in the depot despite having every opportunity to stop... Passengers allege that it was deliberate and there was no provocation of any sort involved.

Saw this video and cannot think how the driver missed a whole person who wasn't even in the blind spot. The person walking could also have been careful enough to not walk in the middle of the road.

And this time it’s an Altroz that’s broken into two. I have always been telling people that a point impact (all force concentrated in a small area), if done on the side of a car, is enough to break even a BMW into two (yes, that 3 series crash from Punjab). Even Seltos met the same fate and now it’s the “Desh ka Loha”, that couldn’t stand the sideways hit with “Desh ki Lakdi” (tree).

Thank god it was Sunday else it would have been much worse. Wonder what he was thinking. There's a blind 90 degree turn just after this (you can see it in the picture). The accident was waiting to happen.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

A little north of Belgaum, on the NH, on the south-bound side. Wonder what happened, because there are no braking marks of the Innova, and the truck is parked on the side. The debris behind the Innova could indicate that it hit something and lost control. The couple were both young doctors, with a very young daughter. The family was known to our relatives.

May be it is of the same crash and innova pushed the lorry a few feet ahead after crashing on to it.

Possibly the same. Now that you mention it pushed the truck forward, can see what looks like a tyre-mark of the truck's rear wheels in the second pic. I retract my earlier point that the Innova may have hit something first. The debris behind the Innova would be from itself from the impact.

No survivors, sadly. He was taken to Belgaum in a very critical condition, but didnt make it. He had lost his father very recently, and now this.

It's abysmal that we continue losing life to underrun accidents.

Even the few trucks I've seen with underrun protection have it for namesake - the horizontal metal bars are held in place by (relatively) flinsy mounts that'll give way at minor shunts.

We need proper legislation for all commercial vehicles such that they clear fitness certification if - and only if - they have underrun protection that are certified for something like 56 KMPH or 64 KMPH.

Accidents and deaths are not caused due to a single reason (which is usually termed "overspeeding"), but a culmination of reasons. Underrun protection, bad banking/ unscientific roads, along other infrastructural and procedural deficiencies are what is making us thr nation with highest deaths in road accidents.

My heart-felt condolences to the departed's family
