Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

This video came on my Youtube feed.

Though the Omni driver is wrong, its an avoidable crash as the driver had spotted the van early but instead of slowing down, he swerved and crashed.
Intersections, gap in medians are high risk zones and we cannot afford to get distracted.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

The car driver likely panicked, causing the car to skid due to high speeds. It’s advisable to slow down on such highways, especially with a median opening.

The Van driver quickly turned around. The Jeep driver ( James Bond) attempted to catch the Van but then made a U-turn to probably attend to the car occupants, almost causing a repeat accident with a Baleno —a humorous incident if no one was injured.

Pure panic this. For such a panicky driver, this could be considered over speeding as it was beyond his ability to stay under control.

A few of such accidents could be averted if the driver was driving with a little bit of anticipation and was quick to act when things seemingly start to go awry.

Most of the drivers are extremely wary of slamming the brakes hard while driving at good speeds. The belief is that vehicle could skid out of control and/ or topple and could lead to serious damage to the vehicle and injuries to the occupants.

However, if the driver keeps the car in a straight line and slams the brake hard, the probability of slowing/ stopping in the straight line is much higher. Instead they try to veer to left / right and then try to correct their steer, and in the process the vehicle loses its stability as the weight shifts from one side to other side in quick succession in a fraction of second and then there's no hope of any control.

I always stress fellow TBhpians to practice braking on an empty straight road, get to know your vehicle braking power and ability, practice multiple times till you gain confidence about your vehicle's straight line stability and braking prowess. This will remove the panic element to some extent when you face a real life scenario as in the subject video, and without any hesitation you would slam the brakes as you have done it and practiced it and know how it works.

People don't like to learn and practice safe driving habits and also learn their vehicle's capabilities and limitations. And when they face a panic situation in real life, they just crumble and succumb.

Start with hard braking at low speed such as say 20 or 30 Kmph. See how the vehicle behaves. Do it multiple times. Then increase the speed to say 40 Kmph and slam the brakes. See how the vehicle behaves. If brakes are not holding or is mushy address those issues at A.S.S. and get back to practice. Once you are comfortable with hard braking the fear of skidding / toppling etc reduces to a great extent and muscle memory steps in and there's a real good chance that you could escape unhurt from a similar situation as the subject video. Otherwise all the dissection/ discussion on hindsight is wasted time & opportunity

And an important advice here. Always, I say always, wear the seat belt. Every occupant in the car (both front and rear seat occupants) should and must wear seat belt. This should be a second nature to you, your family, your friends and who ever occupies the co driver seat and rear seat. No Seat belt and hard braking don't go well together for the body bones. So, kindly keep the same in mind.

From what i could see in the compressed 4K Youtube video, following permutations are possible:
KL 43 S 6014
KL 43 B 6014

KL 45 S 6014
KL 45 B 6014

You might have better luck with a non-compressed video and a better 4K monitor. I did this on an HD monitor so some pixels might be squished together. I've attached some screenshots of YT frame.

Braking hard at speed is scary, even with all the abbreviations manufacturers have given us to help. The thing is, though, it is not nearly as scary as steering hard!

I absolutely agree with the advice to practice braking hard. Valuable advice, which I don't see often.

Checked the details of all 4 numbers; only one of them is a bike.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Or it could be : KL 48 B 6014 / KL 48 S 6014. The former one is for a Yamaha FZ whose insurance seems to have expired too. Those images pay close resemblance to a naked bike, but again this a blind guess and I could be speculating. The latter is for an Ola scooter, so that could be ignored.

Cheers,
NI

I did check these numbers and some others too, but they don't seem to match with the model of the squid's bike. Here's the view of the guy from my rear dashcam (the image is inverted horizontally). I am bad with motorcycle models. Can anyone identify which one this is? Looks like a Pulsar NS to me with those fang-like white LEDs.

It's clearly a Pulsar NS so looks like all permutations and combinations were incorrect . Another possibility I'm guessing is this squid could possibly be riding a stolen bike and swapped out the number plate to avoid getting caught. Guy needs to be caught and punished ASAP else a major tragedy could happen.

Thanks for the snap OP, that clears some confusion. Agree with the BHPian's comment above, that does look like a Pulsar NS through and through. Never mind our permutations and combinations, the squid needs to be taught a lesson legally. Similar event did occur sometime back with my father, where a squid ended up damaging his car in a busy intersection and fled off in warp speed giving us no time to capture the details. That being said, appreciate your kind gesture in helping the other motorcyclist mate, it's a rare trait these days.

NB : Did some more permutations and combinations, the closest that came was KL-45-S-6914, happens to be a Pulsar NS200. All, pure speculation though, so please take it that way (mods, please remove this addition if you find it irrelevant) won't know until the culprit gets caught through. Fingers crossed on that.

Cheers,
NI

This got me interested and I did some digging online. It's all pure speculation, but the bike, currently with its 3rd owner has expired insurance and multiple challans pending for many months. I got hold of one of the challans and the registration plate looks like this. It does look very similar to the one in the footage.

Could very well be OP, but we can only speculate and hope for the best. Unless the other motorcyclist lodges a complaint, the cops genuinely take it up, chase the case and nab the culprit and prove this right, this will all end up as blank shots. I'm hoping that the gentleman muster up the resolve to do the right thing. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,
NI
