2 Malayali women killed, 10 injured in accident in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu

https://www.onmanorama.com/news/kera...amil-nadu.html

In addition to the brutality of the accident, what caught my attention is the number of people in that car. 12 people in a car?!

Passenger overloaded cars; The recipe is almost similar to the tragic car crash in Alappuzha a few weeks back where five MBBS students were killed and one succumbed to injuries later in the hospital.

Very true. School buses are one of the most rashly driven vehicles on road. Private school vans are much decent compared to school owned buses . Sometimes I feel KSRTC buses are more predictable compared to school buses, may be because I expect decent road manners from school bus drivers.

Couple of times I noticed a school bus jumping signals as well, I am an alumni of that school; planning to make a complaint if I notice the same behavior again.

Olded Innovas in particular are the Omnis of yore & upper middle class Eeco. These are taxi favourites because these are 8 seater rated as compared to 7 seater rated competitors. It is very easy crossing the barricades by greasing the cop manning the check post & in the smaller cities either there are no checks or the Gandhis come cheap.

It is time only the vintage & classics are permitted & almost all vehicles beyond there 15 years life scrapped with incentives to buy new. At least the chances of more compliant vehicle are better.

21st December, the traffic was higher than usual. Holiday mood had kicked in and I too had just passed approximately an hour before this accident occurred. I do get chills when I think about this incident. It could be any of us.

That's truly unfortunate. This incident takes me back to my first accident in 2016. I was driving our 2-year-old Swift cautiously in semi-traffic conditions, where the average speed wouldn’t exceed 15 kmph. A mosquito inside the car caught my attention and distracted me for about five seconds. In that brief moment, I lost focus on the road and ended up hitting a two-wheeler, who unfortunately had to be hospitalized immediately. Thankfully, the accident occurred right in front of a well-known hospital, so we were able to get him treated without delay.

My advice to all young drivers out there. Never even try to shift your focus from the road for even a second. Incase you have to, just park the car besides the road.

If you scrap 15 year old cars, how will you have any vintage and classics???

Swift rear ended a Tata Nexon in Ghat section. A dangerous manoeuvre by overtaking from left.

Looks like he was not focused on what was happening in front of him and when cars in front stopped the dude panicked and just went to the left and just crashed.

Panicked?

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Just saw this less than 45 mins ago on the Mumbai Pune expressway (Mumbai bound). This was on the final portion of the ghat section where one descends down just before the food court and 2nd toll. This was the traiing part of the truck. The truck itself was about 50 - 100 mtrs before this on the right side but I couldn’t snap it in time. It was being recovered or removed when I passed it.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

In December 2021, I had a terrible car accident. I was driving my Tata Tigor to visit my in-laws. The road was in bad condition, and my car got stuck in the mud. I had to use a tractor to pull it out.

After pulling it out, I drove slowly to check if the car was okay. But I didn't notice any problems. So, I started driving normally again. While driving at 90 km/h, I needed to change lanes and pressed the brake slowly. But the brake jammed, and the car skidded and flipped over onto its roof!

My wife and I were hanging upside down from our seatbelts. It was a very scary moment. But thankfully, we were both safe and didn't even get a scratch. I managed to tow the car to a service center, but it was damaged beyond repair.

I feel lucky to have escaped without any injuries.

I do long drives multiple times a year and things are getting really worse.
Trucks and heavy vehicles in India never take the left lane since there is too much going on those lanes and so they have to frequently slow down or stop and then start again. This is extremely taxing not just for the drivers but also for the heavy vehicles, some of which carry pretty heavy loads.
Due to their inherent weight and the loads they are carrying, owing to their momentum, it takes a lot of force and time to slow down and accelerate again so they naturally take the right-most lanes which are considerably drama-free.
On newer highways, where slow moving traffic like- three-wheelers, e-rickshaws, tempos etc are not allowed, I have seen most heavy vehicles move on the middle-lane or the left-most lane. In fact on such highways I have seen slow moving stupid drivers talking on there phone, driving on the fast/overtaking lane. No matter how much you honk them or signal them they will not budge.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Here are two incidents captured on my Dashcam

1: Today at Palakkad Town:

I narrowly escaped from rear-ending the car, which got into the accident (I know I should have kept more distance).

2. Pondicherry - Tindivanam NH on 11th Dec 2024:

I was about to take a left turn off the highway and was driving slowly also because of the rain. I could not figure out then why the scooter lost balance. Discovered the reason only when I saw the rear dashcam video later on.

The white car and you should have stopped for the blue car which was already there in the roundabout, later the bike should have stopped for the white car which was already in the roundabout and not dart straight in. But where are the visual stop lines on the road ?

Unless the design, rules and “right of way” are clearly defined in the heads of all drivers & riders, such incidents are bound to happen, it’s just a question of when !! I have seen people perfectly driving at round about and it works like a clock work precision with zero incident, subject to people know what they are supposed to do.

Safe driving.

Completely agree with you. Guilty as charged!

Many (including myself) know rules and "right of way", but adherence is a challenge

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/in...-12905238.html

''1.8 lakh people died in road accidents in 2024. Among them, 30,000 people died due to not wearing helmets. Another grave matter is that 66% of the victims of fatal accidents belonged to the age group of 18-34 years"

These numbers are worse than warzone.

The increasing number of vehicles on the road, combined with negligence, poorly implemented traffic rules are leading to a rise in accidents YoY.

Road accidents in the last five years.

Year # of people killed
2019 1,58,000
2020 1,38,383
2021 1,53,972
2022 1,68,491
2023 1,73,000
2024 1,80,000
