2 Dead As Bolero Jumps Divider And Crushes Cab, Drunk Driving Suspected
Two people were killed and another critically injured when a Bolero SUV jumped the divider on the Delhi-Noida link road and hit a car coming from the other side before crushing a cab.

The accident took place late on Saturday night. According to reports, Suman Dhoopra (63) and her husband Sanjiv Dhoopra (67) were returning from a family function in Noida and had booked a BluSmart cab driven by Arjun Solanki (32).
On the Noida Link road, a speeding Bolero SUV coming from the side of Akshardham Temple lost control, jumped the divider and entered the parallel lane. It first hit a Baleno car before landing on the cab. One side of the cab was completely crushed. Visuals showed several people moving the Bolero SUV to rescue the cab's passengers. Suman Dhoopra, Sanjiv Dhoopra and Arjun Solanki were rushed to a hospital. Suman and Arjun were declared dead and Sanjiv's condition is critical.

The Bolero driver fled the spot after the accident. Reports said alcohol bottles were found in the SUV. An FIR has been registered at Mayur Vihar police station and police are looking for the accused.
According to reports, the cab driver Arjun Solanki was the sole breadwinner of his family and lived with his parents, wife and two children in Greater Noida. His cousin Yogesh said, "The Bolero driver was drunk and the SUV crushed his cab. He was going to drop off passengers."

I left after a couple of minutes as traffic was piling up, without realizing that the accident was captured on my dashcam. Hope the bike rider is okay, and that car driver was not penalized - would like to send him the footage, but not sure how to get his contact, though I have the car's registration number.
Hope the biker has less severe injuries.

Though it seems that the primary reason for the accident is the inability of biker, a closer looks suggest otherwise.

I think the reason for car slowing down is for allowing the yellow/green auto to take a U turn. For me, the auto took a chance to do a quick u turn from extreme left slip road. May be it could have taken the slip road little further (as seen in dashcam video) and attempt a straight run across flowing traffic. That could give auto driver a good visibility to time his turn.

The time difference between car slowing down and bike crashing is actually 4 seconds (0:06 to 0:10 sec of video). Is it enough for biker to respond?

1. The U turn is exactly where the curve ends. This type of engineering design lacuna is observed everywhere, in highways, cities. Median opening is provided where visibility is poor.

2. Car brake lamp design. I went back to Team BHP review and below is the functional definition of brake lamp

3. Car colour. How visible will be a red brake lamp in a red car?

Nevertheless, this video clearly shows the inherent unsafe nature of two wheeler, unless the rider understand the limit of two wheeler in a given road environment.

(PS: It is good to see every rider/pillion of two wheeler in this video frame wore a helmet. That is commendable, Kochi!)

That is a good suggestion, but I passed on the video and the car number to one of my classmates who is in MVD - he should be able to send it to the owner's number.

Hmm..I am not sure if this is the case. I was also seeing this first-hand, and I was actually expecting the biker to swerve slightly to the left for quite some time (a couple of seconds, but quite a significant time in driving terms) before he went on to hit the car. It was quite a surprise that he hit it.

IMO, there was enough time for him to notice the car, even if he did not notice the brake light. And as mentioned earlier on this thread, he did not take any evasive action till the end, which is very surprising.

Yeah, helmet compliance is pretty good in Kochi city, especially in main roads.

Regrettable accident, but nonetheless, really don't understand the mentality of drivers/riders. They stop the vehicle right in the middle of the road to analyze the accident. It would be better to park their vehicle safely at the roadside before getting out. My two cents.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Witnessed a major road accident yesterday in Hassan - Bengaluru national highway near Hanbal Chikki Factory.

The 14 wheeler Ashok Leyland truck belonging to VRL Logistics heading from Hassan side lost control due to tyre burst, overshot the divider, fell on its right side and went sliding taking two lives of people sitting on a nearby shop and driver was seriously injured.

Ambulance and Fire engine was deployed in service and there was huge block.

Fourteen wheels, and it can lose control due to the loss of one tyre? Could this be one of those standard excuses like "brakes failed?"

I think this is the location where the road takes a 120° left turn on a downslope when going from Hassan to Sakaleshpura. More likely the truck couldn't handle all of that together. The tyre burst could be the effect, not the cause.

Not sure what exactly happened here, but seems like the driver reversed in speed and hit the wall, the wall collapsed and the car came crashing into the ground floor from the floor above. Freak accident. Video reported to be from Pune.

I think you can be very sure! Not at all a freak accident, but the natural result of driving fast at a 1st-floor wall! So... How? Wrong gear. But why would he have accelerated to fast, even going forward? Wrong gear followed by pedal confusion?

I'd like to see the face of the guy who was working with something on the ground nearby .

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

It looks like poor construction quality to me. I dont think the City (?) was reversing at speed. The boot doesnt really look much crumpled until it fell down. I think more like forgot to brake rather than trying to accelerate?

These are not really load bearing walls though I guess and hence just a nudge at < 15/20 Kmph caused the wall to come crashing down.

You could be right.

But speed is relative, and 15-20kph is rather fast for a carpark.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

I’m a new member but definitely not a new visitor to this huge and amazing car community.

I never thought this would be my first post on the forum, but unfortunately, it’s about an accident my father was involved in a couple of days ago.

He was driving his Sonet Diesel Manual on a road he’s been using for the past three decades. On Friday afternoon, he was cruising at 50 km/h when he rear-ended a tempo. He glanced at the speedometer for a split second, and at the same time, the tempo ahead slowed down slightly. In panic, he tried to brake, but it was too late.

Thankfully, my father is safe as he was wearing his seatbelt. He sustained no injuries except for slight swelling on his wrist. No one else was injured in the accident.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Should the airbags have deployed in this situation? They did not in this case.

2. The car got stuck in fourth gear after the accident, and I’m not sure why or how. When speaking to the service center representative, I recall him mentioning that such issues have occurred before.

Attaching images with this thread. I’d really appreciate any help or expert opinions from you all to clear my doubts.

Glad to hear that your father is safe.

The primary purpose of the airbags is to protect the occupants by cushioning the impact of body to interiors of the vehicle. The airbag ECU evaluates the situation based on multiple parameters and deploys airbags accordingly. As your father had only minor bruising, I believe that airbag deployment was not required. The likely reason can be that the tempo was not fully stationary, with driver pressing onto brakes, and on impact the tempo moved ahead absorbing some of the impact.

On-side note, non-deployment of airbags in this situation has saved on repair cost.

There can be multiple reasons for this. Simplest one is the movement of gear lever due to impact. Another could be layout of gear shifting cables resulting into cables being stuck in a particular position.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Saw a ghastly accident on way to Chennai. This was after the Vikravandi toll gate and involved multiple four wheelers and maybe more than one two-wheeler. Two ambulances were pressed into service and hence it is apparent that several people have suffered injuries. I hope only injuries.

What is not seen in the video, but spotted by me as I drove along, are the damages on the other side of the highway. One can clearly see the traffic moving slowly on the other side as well. Some gory scenes couldn't be captured by the dashcam. I hope there are no caualties.

Glad that your father is safe!
I see that the driver seat belt is still engaged in the 3rd picture when no one is inside. This makes me wonder whether your father was belted or not
