Very sad indeed.

The second bus had plenty of time to react. It looks like as if the driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes or de-clutched while in a low gear before applying the brakes (causes the vehicle to lunge). If you look closely, you will see the bus accelerating ever so slightly before the collision.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

This two wheeler risked the lives of tens of people with his complete lack of awareness of traffic rules and his own safety.
I think the bus driver should have braked and kept going straight, for the greater good.

Thoughts?

Biker, absolute moron. Road designer, his kumbh-separated sibling.

When building major highways, how difficult is it to build crossover points under or over the carriageway?

Bangalore-Mysore expressway is far from an ideal example of highway construction, but crossover points is one thing they've got right.

This is becoming a very common crash scenario on Indian highways, especially at intersections or gaps in the median.

The pattern typically follows this sequence:
  1. A biker waits to turn.
  2. When the biker feels they've waited long enough, they suddenly turn across the road.
  3. Vehicles on the highway get startled and begin swerving or braking hard.
Instead, we should focus on:
  1. Observing road signs.
  2. Rumble strips.
  3. Zebra crossings (though it's unclear if they make sense on highways without traffic-calming measures).
  4. Gaps in the median.
These measures can serve as sufficient warnings for drivers to be more alert.
In the end, it's preferable to brake straight rather than swerving. We need to pay attention to the above factors to reduce the need for emergency braking.

Terrible accident caught on CCTV. A SUV (looks like Mahindra XUV 300) rams into a bike at full speed in UP. The SUV, decorated with wedding garlands, was on its way to pick up a groom when the driver lost control and hit the bikers. The driver did not stop and as per the reports, hit another pedestrian down the road before he was caught.

One of the victim is severely injured. I wish a speedy recovery to all the three victims.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Accidents happen in an instant, but I think they also start days in advance.

Have a small group of friends who meet up on weekends to work out, run, and during the week we also meet up on a couple of days, early mornings before work. We keep each other motivated, but that can also have negative consequences.

One friend was having a busier than usual time recently with a new job. When I saw him over the weekend, in his car, he was visibly stressed and driving (I thought) a bit faster than usual. Didn't say anything. I really should have.

This morning, we were supposed to meet up, he didn't turn up. I assumed he had been working late again and probably decided to sleep in. When I got back home and finally checked my phone, I heard from another friend that he did wake up early, was driving to meet us, when his car was hit by another car. No one was hurt thankfully. But I can't help wondering if the added pressure to wake up early, come and join us, had a part to play.

Hobbies are meant to be relaxing. They should not become an added form of stress or peer-pressure. We should all de-prioritize whatever we can, especially when the other aspects of our lives (family or work) start to demand additional time. De-prioritize something, don't try to do it all and use that time to get more sleep, relax whatever. Don't bring the stress to the car!

This is tragic. As someone who drives on this ghat at least twice/thrice per year, I can say that its very tempting to speed up downhill towards Raigad district, but the road is just about enough width for two vehicles at some places and I've seen quite a few narrow escapes of people driving in a hurry trying to overtake on this stretch.
Hopefully, we will learn from some one else's mistakes.

Thanks for sharing and om shanti for the departed souls.

Though I am a frequent user of this road on 2 wheeler I drive 4 wheeler very rarely on this route.

I drove on this route couple of months back during evening for the first time while coming back from Ganapatipule, and was shocked by the way people were driving . I mean, how long can one keep on going overtaking in the blind curves? The luck has to run out sometime.

It’s a positive surprise that we do not get to hear about accidents on this route on daily basis!

Its a fast and smooth road , but narrow on many occasions with really sharp curves. Its difficult to control your vehicle on some bends if one does not keep a leash on speed.

Traffic was sparse a decade ago, but not so more. It has become a popular route to cross over to Goa highway since Bhor ghat is not in shape.

One more incident of a Thar driver going on a rampage. Video reported from Greater Noida. This kind of manic road rage knows no bounds. Appalling!

This video also deserves to go to the 'Weird and Wacky mod jobs' thread for those hideous Alloy wheels.

On a serious note, hope the driver is caught and is dealt with. High time a psychological analysis is done before DL is handed over to people otherwise I don't know how India can afford to have the ever increasing population all on the road with this dismal level of policing and law enforcement.
