I get how emotionally charged this could have been, and I believe I'm no saint either. My BP also will shoot up and I'll maybe throw caution to the wind, if someone hits me and runs off like that.

But I'm saying this with all due respect: That was probably not a great way to respond.

Too many 'what-if's in that situation, and you've been quite lucky in how it turned out.

I've heard of road rage accident involving drunken folks, and the results were not so great.

I recall seeing the immediate aftermath of one such incident not very far from my house. All I recall was debris of multiple vehicles all over the road, and three or four loaded ambulances leaving the place. I later learnt it was some drunk guy trying to overtake some autos, but instead crashing into them after losing control.

I also recall reading about one other recent incident, where a political vehicle (katchi vandi) with inebriated goons in it started following some folks after a road rage incident.

If I'd gotten the licence plate captured on my dashcam, I'd have just taken this up with insurance/police, irrespective of how flawed our system might be. Nothing is worth risking your own safety.

Glad you're safe and got compensation. Please don't do this again. Worst case, stay in your car and call the cops, you anyway had dashcam footage of the plates.

Don't mean to sound preachy but avoid confronting Omni/Eeco/goods carriers, vehicles with a lot of people, drunk people, people after sunset, etc. It ends horribly more often than we think.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

To clarify few things:

Their car had to be towed from the spot since it had a ruptured radiator and wasn't cranking.

We shared the numbers of the to truck, and also a lodge that was nearby and asked them to stay and leave the next day. We made them call the lodge in front of us, confirm the stay.

We advised them on what could have have happened if something worse was in store for them such as hitting a pedestrian.

Of course, I did think of the mishaps that could happen if they were able to drive the car away.

The driver wasn't out of his senses (meaning - all out drunk) and at first I couldn't make out whether he was drunk. The other 3 guys atleast looked and smelled drunk. The driver admitted he was drunk as well.

And when I stopped their car, I could see that all of them were pretty scared and were stuttering while talking. Gave me the feeling that they were S*** scared. Of course, anything could have happened.

Anyways, I admit what I did wasn't the right thing but it was at the heat of the moment.

Unless compliance is regulated with full transparency we will continue to be stuck at square one. It is sheer criminal that every 3 minutes a person is killed in India due to traffic accident. Some of these are definitely avoidable.

"Quotation gangs" is what contract goons are known locally in Kerala. "Take a quotation" means accepting a contract to do financial (demolish a place of business, for example) or physical (break an arm or two) harm to anyone.

I can understand that your actions were due to the heat of the moment. The right thing to do when you stopped them, would have been to call the cops which would have deterred them from another DUI in the future, sorry but that would have been the responsible thing to do.

Anyway glad that things did not go south for you.

The GCDA junction and the right towards the indoor stadium is always a busy point. Unsurprisingly, this is the usual spot for the police checking at night.

Four against one. As mentioned by others, it could have gone haywire. I believe the busy street with public and a good samaritan went in your favor.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Driving in opposite lane on a divided highway should be severely penalised.
(This one is an under construction road, but still properly divided)

Here, the blue shirt bike rider seen at the very beginning of the video is going wrong side and took a blind turn across the road, possibly killing or seriously injuring two people.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

A careless taxi passenger caused a bike accident and damaged my car.

Got into a scrape at Spice Garden, Marathahalli, Bangalore.

A careless taxi passenger opened the door into the traffic without looking out for passing vehicles. A motorcycle rider passing by crashed into the car door and fell. I just about braked in time but still got hit by the falling motorcycle. The motorcycle fell and slid forward, causing minor dents on the front right lip and driver-side door.

Fortunately, the biker escaped unhurt. The taxi passenger who caused the havoc was in a bit of a shock as people surrounded him and admonished him. I was angry too, and got out of the car for a minute to assess the damage. I was heartbroken, but I left the scene quickly as there was no point in arguing. I saw that the biker was safe with some damage to his bike from the fall. Traffic had piled up behind my stationary car, and they were incessantly honking despite seeing the chaos unfold. I was just glad that the poor biker didn't come under the wheels of my car or get injured in general.

Captured on my dashcam:

Here's the damage to my car.

Took the car to Detailing Mafia, Hoodi to get it washed. They removed the scuff marks with polish. Here's the look now.

I'm totally peeved, but I guess these heartbreaks are now considered normal in India.

Apart from the usual drive safely sermon, my sincere recommendations to all readers: Please do not drive without a dashcam.

Of course, the biker was too close, but then they always are. When I was a learner in UK, one of my instructors taught me about a safety line. Never be closer. Suddenly-opened doors, etc, are absolutely a thing, and can kill a biker. I hope the rider learned something that day.

But pedestrians and passengers, whether they drive or not, really should be aware that they are responsible for road safety too. Before opening a car door, look both ways. I've had a door opened onto me as I walked past the car. No, it didn't hurt but it could have if they'd been in a hurry! And there were apologies. But how do we get the message out there? I guess we can only start with our own families. Especially the youngsters.

A similar news item in my local paper recently: biker hits opening door, falls out into the road, gets run over, dead. It's that serious.

Sorry for the damage to your car, but glad nothing worse happened.

I have found it much difficult to get the elders to follow safety norms than children and teenagers. I usually keep the right side door's child lock always engaged whenever there is an elderly gentle man/ lady with me.

I had a similar incident of a biker falling on my car last week, at a flyover construction diversion stretch somewhere between Vellore and Hosur (I don't recollect the exact place).

There were two lanes of slow moving traffic (~ 20 - 30 kmph typical at these diversions) with the occasional third lane formed by two wheelers.

At this particular location, there was no real space for the third lane and I was on the left extreme, with a footpath to my left (~1.5 feet above road surface). A two-wheeler with a pillion (I think both had helmets, not sure) decided to go on the footpath like a few other two wheelers in front of him.

On this footpath, there are ramps around 5 - 6 feet wide to access some shops. When I approach on such ramp, this two-wheeler decides to come down the ramp and join the road where there was little space for the third lane.

The rider might have realised late that either my car is too close or there is no space to join, and lost balance and fell on my left ORVM/door. I immediately stopped and came to a full halt to prevent the two-wheeler sliding on the car and falling down. The car balanced the two-wheeler and the riders.

Had I been moving, I believe the damage to the car/two-wheeler/riders could have been worse - the riders could have come under the wheels of my own car or the vehicles behind.

Tail end: I got hit by a two-wheeler tailing me, and dented my bumper.

I waited just enough for the two wheeler riders to get up and stabilise their ride, before moving forward. Did not stop to check the damage behind, or argue. It seemed pointless in arguing there, causing a traffic pile-up, especially considering both two-wheelers involved would be locals of that region.

Disclaimer: This is my perspective seen from the driving seat, the two wheeler fellow might have his own version, but I believe the two wheeler had no business going on the footpath, let alone come down the ramp at that time. I do not have dashcam to corroborate or defend.

Attaching a rough sketch of the location of the incident (not to scale).

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Not completely sure but this might be the first fatal accident on the Atal Setu maybe?

A 28 year old driver driving a rental (apparently) BMW is said to have crashed into a dumper at high triple digit speeds. The deceased driver of the BMW has been identified as Puneet Singh Majra, a resident of Chembur. I guess be prepared for Interceptors or beefing up of speed cams on this stretch going forward (good reason too I suppose).
