Hello Rehaan,
Does the airbag open if we hit , say a wall at 15-20 mph?
Why i am asking this is , 2 months back, I had met with an accident in my SX4. I banged on to an Indica. He had slowed down on a speed breaker. I think I saw it, but I didn't slow down. (I think I got blanked out for a second. That is the only reason I can think of )
I must have been driving at 50, max 60kmph.
Curious to know something about the airbhgs.
I thought it's the momentum of the car that triggers an airbag to operate. Few cases
(1) SX4, which weighs 1200kg at a speed of 60kmph, definite candidate
(2) What if it was a lighter car, say, A-star or an i10 at 60 kmph or lesser speed? Would airbags open then too?
(3) What if one car is stationary, and another one bangs it on the front? Would both the car's airbags operate (assuming both are fitted)?

Guys airbag is activated on basically 2 principles
one is the speed at which the car decelerates which is sensed from the the speed sensors from the wheels if its a sudden deceleration due to an impact the Engine or electronic control unit ECU sends a signal to the ESPS this has a inbuilt impact sensor which triggers and closes the circuit and then both the combined signals activate the airbags...
other latest features of airbags are the PAB module (Passenger Airbag Module) gets activated only based on
1. occupants presence - either buy a switch near the glove box which has to be switched on if a co passenger is present in the seat before you start the journey
old tech (was in the older sonatas)
2. Pressure sensing system in the seats
3. based on the ELR seatbelts are worn or not

the future and advanced technologies are
1. Airbag deployment based on the weight of the occupant
2. deployment based on the proximity of the occupant (if he/she is fat and well built or lean thin ) etc

Thanks, Rehaan... I was taking a swipe at the idea that collisions at relatively slow speed don't cause pain, if not injury. Would have been more effective if I had got the facts right.

Must say, though, there is absolutely no way I ever want to hit a windscreen or a steering wheel at 15-20kph. I guess that's why the seat belt is the primary safety device, and the air bag is the secondary.

bkbkr1212, I've hit a stationary vehicle (when crossing in front of me, it stalled!) at that sort of speed (50MPH when I slammed the brakes on, no idea what the impact speed was) and, with the seat belt, I didn't feel a thing. Seat belts are the primary protection.

Saw this on my way home after college.
Both are different accidents.


Apparently, the driver lost the front wheel and ended up hitting a tree on the roadside at quite some speed.
The guy relaxing in the background in 1st and 2nd pic, is his navigator.
The driver escaped with some bruises according to his partner.
The last pic was clicked some time back, so just posted it, dunno what happened.

Ishpreet that is one of the worst roads to drive on,especially the stretch that begins from Saha,and goes till yamunanagar.

I was in Ynr,last week and i counted 7 crashes in 55kms,and one indica crashed just in front of me into a tractor,and tractor broke into 4 pieces
Thankfully medical support arrived soon,and injured were evacuated to the hospital.
No pics,as i avoid taking pics of crashed vehicles.

PS:Last pic posted by you is of a Daewoo Cielo,from a marriage.i just hope all survived.

Just last week my junior crashed his i20 crdi, and guess what the compressor engine block were severely damaged, but the airbags didnt deploy.Dont have any pics, may be there might be some other reason that they didnt deploy.
PS I also lost my beloved Optra on to this highway RIP
Still searching for a good replacement.

Was he wearing a seat belt at the time of crash?
btw did i mention i almost crashed 2 weeks before on this stretch,just managed to stop my Accent in time,thanks to new brake pads.
after that i am using my ABS equipped Scorp on this stretch.

Not wearing seat belts is pretty much a death sentence in an accident.
I once put my old Zen into a tree at about 60-70 kmph. Seatbelt inertia reel worked, so no injuries except a leg fractured. The firewall/dashboard intruded very badly into passenger compartment and steering wheel was couple of inches from my chest.

I agree and here too the administration is too cautious on seat belt rules. There is also a quote that goes with it and there are banners here and there which say "Click it or ticket'.

No. Just the fractured leg. No injuries above hip except cuts and bruises.
