A misconception. Brakes do work with the engine off, but without the servo assistance, which means using a lot more foot pressure to achieve the same result. For safety, this is something we should all remember, as there may not be much time to think about it when we need the information at our fingertips. or toetips.

Depends on how fast you want to go. Depends on the condition of the rope. Depends if it was really nylon.

If one must use rope, rather than a solid link as per pro towing vehicle, then nylon is probably a good choice. It has some elasticity and give, which will help with the stress peaks involved.

Give me a choice of, say, nylon, polyester, and kevlar (fantastic strength for small diameter and weight; also fantastic price) then I'd choose the nylon.

On the other hand, "nylon" tends to mean "any old synthetic fibre," in which case it was probably a bit of old, weathered polypropylene, and all bets are off. Nasty stuff: loved by fishermen because it floats and is very cheap.

Above all, towing by rope means keeping to speeds at which the guy behind you can stop in that distance. That's the bit that probably wasn't understood.

If you are using a rope you don't really understand towing.

saw a very bad accident on mysore road today morning. A Temp traveller (I presume ferrying employees of Toyota) got sandwiched between a bus and a truck in such a way that its length got reduced to more than half. Don't have any pics.

Point taken, and admitted. But there is a lot of rope towing done around the world.

I've been towed once, on a rigid coupling, by professionals. Even that was a bit scary! There was a story on the BBC a few years ago about someone rope towing at speeds of up to 100MPH. The police stopped them, and the guy being towed was white with fear!

Come to think of it: I'm white with fear, now, as I feel the moderators coming this way --- they do try to keep this thread on topic!

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Slightly OT, but I rarely read about the make and model of the car involved in accidents in news reports. Why is that? I sense a collusion between media and the Industry to avoid negative publicity to their brands. After all they depend on advertisements and it is possible to arm-twist the media by threatening to take away advertising.

On another level suppressing this information along with details of accident leaves the consumer under-informed about his buying choices.

Any thoughts on this?

@Ragul: Well, that is because most reporters/journalists cannot identify cars as we petrolheads do!

Even if the car make and model is mentioned, most probable that it is wrongly done. The pic will show one and the report would say another!

Most likely driver was not buckled up. We can see impact on windshield.

If seat belts are not used, airbags remain inert.

^^ Omni accident.
If this is a personal vehicle and someone is learning to drive then why is there no "L" sign on it???

It is a very embarrassing mistake to make. I am sure no one got seriously injured in this one.

If I were you I would not mention the word "lady". It politically incorrect nowadays in this context. Danger of getting flamed.

Does the Fortuner come equipped with Side curtain air bags? The vehicle has its rear quarter panel chewed up. If it has only front air bags they will certainly not deploy in this scenario.

EDIT Infact, on a second look the front air bag sensor mount can be seen intact in the front view of the vehicle. In which case the question of front air bags deploying does not arise.

The omni accident goes to show, how things are just taken for granted in India.
One should always do first few training sessions in a Driving instt vehicle or do it in a open play ground.
Its just that people have this regular indian mentality of learning on the job. Than doing it a formal way.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

A santro was in full flames at about 3 pm today at Sahar Road - Western Express Highway at Andheri East. Was not able to click any photo. The car was completely burnt out.

Do not know the causes. Started from the bonnet and quickly the car was fully in flames.

Really?I didn't know that.
As far as this case case, i think its cos the seat-belts may not have been in use.
The air bag is in any case an SRS.
