One point I keep thinking about is that people indulge in all these sorts of behaviour primarily to save time - anything between a few seconds to sometimes hours. So if we artificially introduce outcomes where such behaviour results in significant loss of time - so that the expected time savings suddenly goes to zero or even negative - people would find compliance more to their advantage.

  1. No barriers
  2. The curve is banked wrong
  3. I'll guess that there are no rumblers before this curve to offset #1 and #2.
While the lorry was definitely too fast for the curve, it's the poor infrastructure that's to the primary cause here - even a Linea will understeer at speeds in this curve

Usually such accidents of vehicles hitting a stationery truck (without its underrun protection bar) occur when visibility is poor. Happening at 7.30 am its unusual and even the Tata Tiago's solid build couldn't save the three occupants.

From images it clear that the car must have been doing 100 kmph or more as the car has almost fully gained an "unauthorised entry" into the rear underside of the truck.

Very good and cleanly laid out road, very good road marking. The bus driver should not have crossed the yellow marking. He was clearly driving on wrong side, with disastrous consequences.

The trailer does have a RUPD, however it doesn't seem to be meeting the regulations. As per norms, the height of the bottom most point of the RUPD from ground should be maximum 550mm in laden condition. It appears much higher and that's surely a contributing factor for the outcome in this accident. Can't comment on the speed of the car in absence of any other evidence; it may or may not be a factor.

Infact, most heavy vehicles in India don't meet the norms of RUPD (IS 14812). No surprises how they pass the annual inspection by authorities.

And such, it's evident that these types of accident-prone drivers are giving a damn to such road safety riders.
I woudn't be too hasty to blame the driver.
We have a top of the line XL6 which dad bought (relatively cheap car with lots of bells and whistles). It is a narrow but quite a long car, as long as our Harrier and even when fully loaded (we are all well built, most are 100 Kgs plus, even my 14 year old son is and with luggage on the roof) is very jittery on the expressways (a slight bump and it actually flies in the air).
Guess that is due to the ground effect and it's very light weight (1200 Kgs), the ertiga would weigh lesser I think. We have stopped taking it on long trips and take two cars instead (Harrier + Zest/Nexon) or just limit the speed to 80 kmph. So it is plausible that the car must have gone into flight mode after hitting a minor bump on the road and somersaulted after hitting the median. In such a scenario, the driver has no control as he can can neither brake nor steer.

For all those Hyundai naysayers. Don't know how Eon managed to do this. The only thing to learn from this, just luck matters.

Disclaimer: BTW I'm not owning a Hyundai, briefly considered its sister brand & then eventually went with Mahindra.

'
it was probably moving at around the same speed in the same direction when it overtook the truck, misjudged the length, hit the rear right to the front of the truck and ended up rotated and stuck there in the front. If the truck had actually rammed into that Eon at that speed when the Eon was at a halt, it wouldn't even be recognizable.

Real education is the only solution.

For example: In Japan, until class 4, children are only taught good manners, etiquettes, sense of justice, empathy. The motto is manners before knowledge. Regular school sylabus curriculum comes after age 10.
In a similar fashion, there are "traffic parks" in Japan that explicitly teach young kids about road safety and road rules. This explains the Japanese society's high level of awareness in this aspect (one reference link)

The same has to be done here as well to bring about a societal change eventually in future.

A beat did this too. All depends on the tyres in the end. How long can they last without starting to burn.

Yes, definetly its a aftermarket UPD, a few notches higher then needed but from the construction it looks quite sturdily built, welded at all locations instead of bolted.

If the tiago was driven fast (which quite probably looks like) then the OEM RUPD even though it would have been lower would hardly matter, the car would have definitely landed more or less at the same place.

So true.
Until it actually happens, they either think its their skill that saved them (There's even a thread of debate on skill/recklessness)
OR more worse, they would not be even aware that they have just missed their ultimate appointment.

Cyberabad Police posted this video asking 'Who is at fault?'

Thar starts off from left side with indicator on and attempts a U turn. Meanwhile , a triple riding bike attempts to overtake it , misjudging its turn, and rams into it.

Bad driving by Thar driver. Do not change lanes without checking that the lane is clear. Do not turn across a lane, especially not one where the traffic is likely to be faster, without checking. Do not overtake without first checking that somebody is not coming to overtake you. All basic lane-driving stuff.

Indicator is only relevant in that, if Thar driver had not indicated, it would have been another fault. But if the Thar driver thought that indicator gives right of way, that's a big fault.

Somebody will say that the biker should have anticipated, but, while defensive driving it good, it does not absolve the basic responsibilities of others.

Here, it shouldn't be necessary to even ask who is at fault.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Definitely, it's the Thar Driver who's at fault. I guess, he has not checked his rearview mirror.

Mistake of Biker is secondary. Over speeding, Triple ride, Helmet etc., are all secondary, but contribute to the Accident. Biker's as well as good drivers should always expect idiots on roads. In this case, Thar driver is a bad one.
