| ![]() I got caught up in a massive traffic jam on the 'Maa' flyover on Sunday afternoon. We suspected there was a broken down vehicle somewhere ahead or an accident, since it was very unusual to have so much traffic on a Sunday. Sure enough, we passed by the scene of an accident just as the cops were wrapping up the scene and the tow truck was pulling a badly mangled Dzire away. I couldn't click a picture as I was driving. Turns out the driver had been speeding, when he lost control (on an arrow straight road) and wrapped his car around a lamp-post on the divider, sideways. It was horrifying to see the Dzire nearly folded in half because of the impact. Read in the paper this morning that the sole occupant (driver) was unfortunately killed. Thankfully, he didn't take out any other road user in the process. The Maa flyover is notorious for accidents on a nearly daily basis. Ever since it opened, I've lost count of the number of incidents on it (design as well as stupidity of users is to blame). So much so, that the cops have now banned 2-wheelers from using the flyover between 10 PM and 6 AM, though that really hasn't done much to improve the situation much. Picture taken from the website of Telegraph Kolkata. ![]() |

| ![]() In a rash driving incident, 2 die, 3 seriously injured at Vizag, which involves "New Verna". The way the car lost its shape is disturbing. Last edited by MercFan : 6th March 2017 at 12:02. |

| ![]() my friend residing in Raipur met with an accident today in his Tata Safari. He said that the accident happened due to tie-rod going bust and then he hit the road divider. The speed was not much. He was travelling at 30-40 KMPH. But due to his arrogance, he was not wearing seat belt. He hit the wind screen. Some minor bruises, at-least for the moment, that is what the doctor says. The moment he posted this is our Whats-app group, everyone was upon him as to why not wearing seatbelts. |

On another forum a member reports being hit by a "speeding car" in Germany (Yep: one of those countries where the driving is supposes to be oh-so-disciplined). He broke one headlight, caused quite a lot of damage to the bonnet, and smashed the windscreen from the outside (That's just the damage I remember from the photo of the car). In hospital for a day. It seems nothing was broken. That's testament to modern-car design, which seeks to do the least possible damage to a pedestrian. People might ask how something as soft as a human can do so much damage. No, it is not evidence of an unsafe car, it is evidence of a safe car! (And, it's a small world: exchanging some chat with him about what a difference bullbars might have made, it turned out that he's actually Indian and in Europe for study) *Except... maintenance issues? Could be another lesson here. . Last edited by Thad E Ginathom : 6th March 2017 at 18:34.

Public transport will become safe when a certain level of automated driving is achieved. You may have seen the DARPA challenges on this and its associated video's. More than having rules and acts to constrict your driving pleasure, the municipalities must ensure that the sides of roads are free of debris and hawkers. That itself will give a bit more space for drivers. Painting roads, cameras, fixing more signals and medians are merely money making schemes. We need a minimum level for sure. But re-asphalting main streets of cities or airport areas are redundancies. The news papers do not talk about the real causes of road congestion. Driver training, maintaining sobriety and so on are implicit qualifications of any vehicle's driver. It is the non traffic artifacts that are the culprits. | ![]() In arguments with trees and poles, the car never wins. ... I think that has to become a saying of Thad! I've posted to that effect so often now. Seriously, they do serious damage, regularly leading to deaths. And side swipes: I don't know how much the designers/engineers can do. OK, some cars are going to be safer than others, with beams and better bodies, but there's not much room to build a crumple zone into the thickness of a door. |

Confusing information here ankan. From the link you have shared above, I could gather this: A senior district police officer said Bhattacharya was travelling along with four members of his Bangla band, Dohar, when their SUV was hit from behind by a truck on NH 2 and fell into a shallow water body. Besides Kalika, five other band members were travelling in the car which turned turtle and fell in an adjacent ditch. The SUV had turned into a Car before turning turtle in a ditch!! ![]() Views/opinions apart, Indian Highways are pathetic on their own, a fully crowded vehicle and high speed is just a guaranteed recipe for disaster!! ![]() Last edited by Vik0728 : 7th March 2017 at 15:06.

The other angle of the car getting rear ended by something seems a bit improbable as the rear bull bar seems to be still in proper shape after the tumble. The artiste will be missed by many. RIP.
