Delhi woman dead in crash with SUV being driven by ‘drunk’ 22-year-old DU student

A 38-year-old woman died and her 13-year-old daughter was seriously injured after their vehicle was hit by a car, allegedly being driven by a woman in an inebriated condition, in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh around 11.30 pm Friday.

According to police, the accused, 22-year-old Shivani Malik, was out for a joyride with three of her friends. The four were heading towards Gurgaon after a night out in Connaught Place, said police.

DCP (West) Monika Bhardwaj said Malik has been arrested and booked under IPC sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 304 A (causing death by negligence).

I feel that the moment a person sits behind a wheel in drunken state, he/she is a fit case to be tried under section 302 for murder and not 304 or 304A. How can one say that a drunk person was negligent when they're aware of their drunken state? When not drunk, that person would very well know that how dangerous it is to drive in a drunken state. So it's rather required to put such people behind bars and tried for murder. Sad loss of life for no fault of theirs.

This gruesome accident happened last Thursday (8-Nov-18) morning in front of Sougandhika hotel on NH47 at Nangiarukulangara, near Haripad (KL).

Two students studying Engg at Coimbatore, were returning home after a long bike trip on an RE-Himalayan from Kochi - Kovai - Kodai when they hit a truck & bike caught fire, both getting burnt & killed.

As I have always held, traffic fines in India are intended as revenue generation avenues for police departments and not as deterrents for unsafe driving. Therefore for the PD, it is far more lucrative if this guy continued to drive and racked up more and more fines. Hence the lack of any interest in taking him off the road.

The last challan in that list was issued in Dec 2017 - 11 months back. Are we sure the car was registered to him when they were issued? If it was, with the last challan issued 11 months back and information about the 3-month old baby he seemed to have stopped rash driving around the time they found out about the pregnancy.

Here's another accident that happened in Kerala couple of days back. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt:

As per the link here the car was supposed to be travelling at 150 kmph. Can Alto do such speeds? I understand the speed limit on ORR is 100 kmph.

Basis the impact, the police and other teams estimate the speed of the car. This is an estimate. I don't think this car can travel at such speeds.
Yes, the Hyderabad ORR has a speed limit of 100 kmph. That's normally followed before a speed gun. Once the speed camera is crossed I have seen many drivers take off like no tomorrow.

Sometimes, cars brake abruptly when they see a cop with a camera. I almost rear ended one guy like this.

Most drivers who frequent the ORR know where the cops sit and slow down before this.

Yes, it can!

But it takes a lot of courage and foolishness to push it beyond 100 kmph!

Baffles me every time I read such pieces of news - a witness who was one among these:
a) a passer-by on foot
b) travelling in a bus
c) somebody living closeby
d) someone that reached the spot/called the ambulance or cops
e) someone who managed to catch a glimpse of the speedo in the crashed car, often with the needle resting on the max marking (120+ in most cars)

can accurately tell you the speed at which the vehicle that met with an accident was travelling.

It's high time the media show some restraint on publishing figures like these.

A crash at even the legal speed limit will be fatal. Unfortunate that the family paid the ultimate price for their stupidity. And, fortunate that they didn't harm people and vehicles other than theirs.

I clicked opened the images and the speed violations range from 101 all the way to 134 KMPH and one of the photos captured from the front also hints that the driver never wore seat belts .

Certainly not the way to die and my heart goes out to the little one who was yet to see things around grow up! A complete family destroyed.

Feeling sad for the two innocent lives lost in the mad adrenaline fun. Feeling relieved that this monster is out of the roads.
