Not only so, but these bumpers are also designed to absorb impact. When a car crashes, it is highly unlikely to harm the driver, who is seated much higher. Sorry for the confusion. When i said 'specialist driver' , what i meant was, someone who knew driving well and accompanied the family mainly for driving. It appears that he was sitting probably in the backseat may be exactly behind the driver seat. That is the only seat which was least damaged. This guy was still alive when the ambulance reached the spot. (Also notice that the rear windshield is intact).

Regarding the family members, the two children were in the age group of 13-15. They were apparently sitting in the backseat. The injuries to their dead bodies were minimal.


After finishing lunch at a hotel in my hometown, these 5 people left for their destination and met with this fatal accident within the next 15 kms. They had to cover around 150 -200 kms to reach their destination. Probably that is why they were overspeeding.

The area is a forest area and is slightly hilly at some places. There are no dividers and one bad overtaking attempt can result in a head-on collision. I visited the accident place a few weeks after it took place. The collision took place at the extreme right corner of the road. That probably shows the last minute desperate attempt by the lorry driver to avoid collision.

After finishing the south karnataka tour, the family was on its way back to their original place and were just 150-200 kms away from their homes.

I was there too when this happened.The Eeco had rear ended the wagon R which was trying to follow the 80 kph limit but on the right lane The other 2 vehicles were tailgating and couldnt stop in time .

Off late,I have been seeing atleast one accident everyday on the BETL ! and no BTP in place .

Yesterday evening (Tuesday),the Interceptor which is supposed to nab overspeeding drivers ,was cutting across traffic at more than 80 kph

Last Saturday (12-Nov), me and son are driving to my in-laws home at Kollam. We have covered close to 30kms of the 40km drive and have reached Chavara. It is just 10-15mins more, but find ourselves stuck in a long traffic jam that does not seem to end. Vehicles are either stopped or moving very slowly and finally after 30-40mins, we reach Neendakara and see the cause of the jam.

A truck carrying ice to Neendakara (which is a fishing town) veered to the right side of the road and crashes onto a Ace-kind of vehicle and a bike, killing the biker and the guy driving the Ace. After the accident, the truck landed diagonally across the road, blocking traffic till it was removed. Does this 2-lane median-less road even deserve to be called an NH, if it takes just a truck to block it ?

IIRC, the left lane is marked for two-wheelers while the right for cars.

And I believe the WagonR was very much in right, for following the 80kph limit and sticking to the right-lane. With 2 lanes on an elevated road, I dont think he/ she has any where else to go under the limit. Also if not the right-lane, he/ she would be weaving in and out of the lanes.

On any 2 lane road in a country with RH drive ,the RHS should always be open so that faster moving vehicles can overtake. On the 2 lane road,no matter what speeds you are at ,you have to do it on the left lane .If you see any slow moving vehicle (car,bike,bus..) ,you flash your lights ,use the right indicator ,move to the right lane ,overtake the slower moving vehicle ,use left indicator and come back to the left lane
There is no dedicated bike lane on the elevated road .

While I agree with You on lane driving, I dont think this is practical in the BETL; especially in the peak-hour traffic. Such times, moving in and out of lanes in BETL is practically difficult; when the left lane is predominantly occupied by two-wheelers.

I wouldnt mind moving to the left at 80kph, if there are others wanting to overtake. But when I see that the left is occupied and I would disturb/ cause inconvenience to someone, I simply dont move over. I wait for the next opportunity and would expect the same from the person behind.

Yes ,if everyone is moving at 80 kph ,then this might work .But how would one react ,if he/she comes across a car moving at 60 kph on the right lane .The driver would have to move to the left and overtake .

These days ,i feel like a moron driving at 80 kph .Everyone zips past me only to slow down before the point where the Interceptor is positioned once in a while .And ,once ppl realise that the cops arent there or are on theother lane ,its again pedal to the metal

I think its more about common sense .I personally stick to the left lane no matter what speeds I am doing whenever on a 2 lane road .

I think BETL was designed for 4 wheelers only, later they decided to allow to increase toll revenue. Left lane is for slow moving and 2 wheelers, and most of the two wheelers stick to this except some Chota Rossis.

Once I was doing 80 on right lane there comes one Scorpio few mm behind my car and honked like crazy and was even trying to squeeze between my car and median. Within seconds he moved to left lane scaring a biker and came back to right lane driving very close to my car. Checked his reg plate it read KA 25 X XXXX and I smiled.

A badly punched Dump Truck. Happened on the Hebbal Flyover. Underpaid, Overworked, Sleepless, ill trained Drivers mainly responsible. Have seen these dump trucks driven like Auto rickshaw on the New Airport Road.

Thanks for sharing. I first saw the ill-fated truck on yesterday parked after the flyover descent ramp ends. As I continued to drive towards the city, I could see lot of people parking their vehicles and curiously looking underneath (as in the pic above) and I was wondering if this was a totally different accident.

The spot at which this has happened is dangerous. I have seen last moment maneuvers by all kind of vehicles when they suddenly realize that they need to take the ramp on the left to go towards Kolar/KR Puram.

I have even seen idiots stopping after overshooting this fork and turning their Hazard lights on and reversing their cars.

And you are right on the way these construction trucks are driven these days. Their number plates are hardly visible, they throw all sand and dust on your face/car, they always occupy the right lane and at times if more than 2, they drive at single digit speeds in parallel holding up everyone from behind.

This accident seems like a last moment decision gone wrong.
