Now you can imagine why they don't want to lose sight of vehicles.

Let's just share the road.
I do not completely agree with you. Not losing sight of each other and difficulty in changing is all fine, but I do not see a good reason for them to hog the fast lane especially of tolled roads and express-ways.
Most of the times, the equipments are huge/wide loads and it occupies more than one lane and being on the fast lane covers up some space on the adjacent lane too creating bottlenecks.
If they are on the slow lane, there is that shoulder lane which gives them that additional space for wider loads
If there are some vehicles moving slower that these (i.e., slower than ~20Kmph) the accompanying convoy cars can always move them.
These cars as far as I have seen are at least 300Mtrs ahead of the first truck

Eleven persons, including nine of two closely-related families, were killed on the spot when the car they were travelling in rammed into a heavy-duty trailer coming in the opposite direction in the other lane, near Vedullapalem Junction of Nakkapalli mandal in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Edalaru Sreenu (40), his wife Devi (30), mother-in-law Venkatlakshmi (65), eldest son Sai (10), second son Pavan (8), daughter Durga Aparna (6), Kadiyam Padma (35), sister-in-law of Sreenu, her eldest son Kumar (19) and daughter Sai (17). The other two persons who died and were not part of the family were D. Chiranjeevi Raju (40) and his son Sagar Varma (10).

According to Yellamanchili CI K. Venkat Rao, the nine members of the families were travelling from their residence at Gopalapatnam in Visakhapatnam to Talupullamma Talli temple in Lova in East Godavari district.

At about 10 a.m. the front right tyre of the car burst suddenly, and unable to control, Sreenu, who was driving the car, shot over the divider and rammed into mid-section of the heavy duty trailer that was coming from the East Godavari side to Visakhapatnam, in the other lane. All the nine died on the spot and it took about two hours for the police team to lift the trailer and clear the debris.

The father and son duo was riding a scooter behind the trailer. They rammed into the trailer as the driver of the trailer applied emergency brakes and swerved to the left to avoid hitting the car.

While Sagar Varma died on the spot, his father Chiranjeevi died on the way to hospital. Chiranjeevi is an employee of Hetero Drugs and is a resident of Nakkapalli.

The family of Sreenu, who are carpenters, had acquired the car a few weeks ago and were on their way to the temple to fulfil a vow.

District Collector of Visakhapatnam N. Yuvaraj told The Hindu that the Chief Minister had asked him to file a report. Compensation would be announced soon.

The Collector and Commissioner of Police Amit Garg visited the bereaved family.

...Tyre burst incidents are ever increasing on highways.
I saw another photo of the same incident on another website.
Accidents in India | Pics & Videos-capture.jpg

The report there said that it was a Swift. Now, 9 people in a swift!
Not only did it cost their lives but two other lives on the scooter were lost for no fault of theirs!

Also If I see the ages as quoted below (And assuming it has been reported correctly)
Quote:
Kadiyam Padma (35), sister-in-law of Sreenu, her eldest son Kumar (19) and daughter Sai (17).
A 19 year old son to a 35 year old lady! A case of child marriage too.

Although this is off-topic, it shows that
1. There is no respect towards any rules
and/or
2. People are not educated enough
Both unfortunate things!

A damaged TUV 3OO found parked outside a nearby police station.

Any idea why the front right wheel is place on a block?
Have noticed the same many times when damaged vehicles are parked at this station.

Theft of wheels and easily removable parts makes money for not so honest.

Unusual accident in the thoppur ghat section(Salem - Bangalore).

I witnessed an unusual accident today in the thoppur ghat section(Salem - Bangalore). This happened in the direction towards bangalore.

- A heavily loaded truck on the middle lane, it must be doing around 10-20Kmph speed.

- A helmet-less two-wheeler guy on the middle lane exactly behind the truck. (No vehicles on the left lane and the right lane). He must have been doing around 50-Kmph speed.

- When I noticed this truck and the two-wheeler, the distance between them was at least 50M if not more.

- I was behind this guy initially and seeing the slow moving truck, I started moving towards the right most lane. But this guy was still on the same lane and didn't reduce the speed either

- I thought he is going to do some stunt by changing the lane at the last moment. So, I slowed down to give him enough space, if he decides to move to the right lane.

- Distance between the truck and him kept reducing alarmingly and I almost shouted seeing him still going head-on and in split seconds, bang! he hits the rear of the truck and falls face-down. He was motion-less when I passed him by.

- The truck guy stopped and the cars behind stopped as well. Since there was some help, I sprinted to the toll which was less than 2Kms from this spot and asked them to send an ambulance. They took the location details from me and rushed immediately.

From my angle, I am really not sure where exactly he was seeing. The one reason that could have caused him to crash is, he might have been texting on this mobile using his left hand. Either this or he had a death wish to crash into a truck. He was definitely not looking to his sides ,either right or left.

Whatever it is, this was due to a very basic mistake and shows how costly it can end up.

They were not army people but CISF jawans and officers who were I think escorting the trucks which you mentioned. I guess the cargo was sensitive and secretive.

I have been using the NICE road for office commute as well as for personal trips in both the directions towards tumkur and hosur. And It is not dangerous at all.
It is designed and built just like an expressway with no joining roads, clear entry and exit routes just an empty grass area divided by a gap for a median. There is no one who can enter the roads from sides, there is no danger of someone jumping the median etc.

What is dangerous are some of the drivers who drive on this road. And they belong to all categories - cars, cabs, two wheelers, bus, truck, lorry etc. There are some sections which have an incline and loaded vehicle slow down and sometimes there are two in a row which slows down the vehicle behind them.
But instead of having a little patience and overtaking when it is safe to do so, these gentlemen and gentleladies in hurry use the left or the right shoulder to quickly undertake an overtaking manouve which is sometimes accompanied by honking with all the glory.
It is important to understand that roads are public properties and we have to drive according to the conditions and not how we wish.
120 KMPH limit does not mean from toll to toll I have to maintain that speed.

I don't know if this matters but I have been using it too and this since 2007 when it was still undone at Kanakpura Road and Bannerghatta Road Junctions.

And that my dear friend is when a road ends up becoming dangerous isn't it?

How you think we end up referring to roads being dangerous ? Starting with Road surface, Design, markings, entry and exit, existence or the absence of shoulders etc. And enough has been discussed on how bad the road surface is today.

Sadly though it's lesser mortals like us who might just be doing that as much as possible.

Oh Thank you for pointing that out. Thats something we all are aware of. 120 being the upper limit gives enough nuts behind the wheels to try that thinking it's a "Safe Speed" and that is exactly where they end up with mishaps not knowing how and where they will encounter their brother who would be equally driving bad.

Moments after reducing my speed to the indicated 50MPH, I learnt with a crash that the speed limit is not necessarily the safe speed --- and yet I have heard people, on several occasions, talk as if one has to drive at 70MPH on British motorways. Ignorance and misconception is rife!

I think that T. John institute has a direct entry from the NICE road? And btw, that "empty grass area divided by a gap" is a problem. Carriageway separators ought to be raised with thick bushes to a certain height, to block the glare from oncoming vehicles' headlights.

That is one of the dangerous entry to a fast paced 4L road. And you pay a hefty premium of Rs.4 per Km.

Indeed a highly dangerous one. Trucks and other longer vehicles will eventually spill onto the left lane blocking someone who is approaching at good speeds.

This entry is created only to call it an entry in their record books without taking care of the safety at all.

A speed limit of 120 and just look at the state of affairs, especially the surface. The undulations on the road surface result water puddles when it rains and those are really dangerous if you are new to this road and cruising at highway speeds and are greeted by one of these all of a sudden.

On the other end soon after you exit the Tumkur Road side toll booth and before you take the ramp down for Tumkur or Bangalore, they have a break in the median that allows villagers to cross this road on their vehicles.

This is exactly at a spot where a normal car would have gained speed of at least 80-100 KMPH while a truck would be anywhere between 60-70 KMPH.

Cars, Bikes, 3 Wheelers actually cross this section of the "Expressway" as they have ensured to level the median for this. If you thought its the Public who did this, mind you, there is a Security Guard sitting here managing the traffic .

Look at Googlemaps as well on how this is such a vulnerable spot. Have seen to many cases where vehicles tend to misjudge the approaching speeds of the oncoming vehicles on NICE road and try to cross the road and end up putting everyone's lives on danger.

Accidents in India | Pics & Videos-nice.png

And no, that is not an underpass or an overbridge. It is a road that perpendicularly cuts NICE road where the median is leveled!

Sad that an avid and safe biker is made to look like a speed junky.

Well, it just pandered to the rabid "news people's" sense of bias and stereotype. You can imagine with fair detail the "journalist" salivating and drooling when he must have heard of the accident. "Biker? Woman? Ratings!"
RIP, Veenu.

These kinda stupid articles, omitting the facts, are just feeling the hatred towards bikers. For what joy have the inserted the text "used to ride her Harley at 180km/h"? Morons! Just want to sensationalise everything!

Rest in peace Veenu.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Just returned from Coimbatore via Sathyamangalam/Kollegal route to Bangalore. Lovely drive and enjoyed the journey but one irritant black VW Polo just completely ruined it for me. I didn't note the number, couldn't do that due to traffic in the highway, but this was somewhere near Kanakapura. This guy was very much in a hurry, constantly swinging left and right behind me, honking all the time. I normally keep a good distance between me and the car ahead, and with the incessant honking I moved left and let him go ahead. He rushed past me in a hurry, and I don't know if he was completely devoid of intelligence or not, but in the overtaking manoeuvre, he went and rammed into the next car head on. I was safe as I had moved to the left lane allowing him to overtake, but I could see the car ahead had a significant damage to his rear end. Both of them stopped of course, but I think if I had not let him move ahead, he might have rammed my car instead. Psychotic idiots on the road these people are. They don't realise that all that go-kart type driving not only damages their own car, but they are likely to lose control at any time and cause trouble to others as well. All that to prove to their friends on face book that they reached from A to B in X hours. Who the heck cares!! Its these type of people that make driving a stressful experience for everyone else!! Worst part of the thing was that the chap had the guts to blame the Swift guy (who got rear-ended) for braking hard.
