Another example of rash driving claiming lives of other innocent people - RIP the deceased.
A very unfortunate accident. RIP.

This accident just reiterates the fact that no matter how safe and wonderful driver you are, an idiot behind the wheel in another car can be the reason for your accident.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

CCTV footage of a road accident that happened on November 5th, 2016 in Siruvachur, Tamil Nadu. Unable to get more information on this but looks like a fatal one. Because of the negligence of both the drivers, an old man who was crossing the road got hit by water cans. Hope he is ok. From the video, it looks like the car was driven at very high speed which the driver couldn't control.

Thanks,
Ravi

Those are aluminium milk cans and those pickup trucks carrying milk are driven at good speed as milk has to be distributed and sold before it gets spoilt. That doesn't excuse the car driver who hit the truck! Seriously mad to be doing those speeds when you approach a town .

Horrific accident. By the look of things the wagonR was at a higher speed than other vehicles on the road. The cargo vehicle driver did not bother checking to his left and just went ahead. What's surprising is the WagonR driver doesn't seem to have braked (no skid marks) nor is there any change in trajectory indicating there wasn't any steering input either right upto the point of impact. The vehicle was pretty much in his path and vision about 2 seconds before collision. In fact by the time of collision the pick up is bang in the middle of the road. The driver took his eyes off the road to look at his phone, may be?

What is really surprising (or rather not) is how each vehicle is driven at such speeds while passing the intersection when there are visible hints to a driver regarding the presence of Pedestrians waiting - A bus stop here is imminent along with the fact that you can all the times expect pedestrians to cross the road.

The Milk van of course couldn't assess the approaching speed of the car but this is how it is in real life, when on road - As a driver it is YOU who has to slow down at such junctions and all it takes is letting off your leg from the A Pedal for 5 seconds when you spot an intersection with so much crowd as seen here.

Trust me, you need not even have to brake here to pass this safely then, nor even change the gear and just continue to reach cruising speeds after this without a hassle.

Needless to say, when you have eased on the throttle, your mind and eyes will have terrific concentration and gauging ability to see things around and stay alert than it is to when all you have in mind is "Let me cross this as quickly as possible" - Unfortunately, that thinking itself is a major reason for accidents at such intersections.

And should I say that when you have gradually slowed down nearing such junctions, there is very little chance for someone to rear end you as you would not really have to slam your brakes at the last moment too since you have a good sight & you are in control now.

Someone crossing the road by this vehicle always thinks you are slower than you appear and that he can simply pass from one side to another. At night, it becomes even more ambitious and your approach speeds can never so easily be judged mainly because from a distance you might as well appear as a truck doing 60KMPH like others but in reality you are at 100-110!

And as I notice the video again, I don't think the car that T-Boned was faster than any others seen before in the video while passing this intersection.

Isn't the location mentioned a 4 lane highway? Even more scary then, if the guy jumped the median and banged against oncoming traffic.

Channarayapatna bypass is 2 lane undivided highway while the rest of the section from Nelemangala till Hassan is 4 lane with a median.

This is a small junction bang in the middle of a wonderful long stretch of road with gentle curves. The traffic too is not much. Cars easily maintain 3 digit speeds.

That's true! Almost every vehicle passing that junction never slowed down for the intersection

Like you said, there is no evidence of the car slowing down even after seeing the vehicle crossing the junction, wonder whether the driver was really paying attention to the road. Or did he think that he can squeeze between the space between the pick-up and the median?

BTW, any idea what happened to the driver of the car?

This is the reason speed breakers come up on laned highways at intersections like these. But that leads to accidents as well , broken wheels and axles and what not.
The best option, to make a flyover so the town and village traffic can cross safely under. These are there at many intersections , even ones that hardly see crossings. With the number of intersections on a highway, it would be a roller coaster ride if all of them have flyovers.
I have noticed on the 4 lane road between Thrissur and Alwaye in Kerala on a recent trip, these intersections have signals. It is annoying to keep stopping every kilometre or so for a signal, but with the traffic and population there, not to forget the speeds, it seemed necessary.

But clearly, it was a lapse of concentration from the WagonR driver. I feel the fatality would be from the car too apart from the old man who got hit if not critically injured.

I drive by that spot every day. As much as wagon r is at fault, so is the tanker driver too. The roads (NH45) are extremely smooth, wide, straight and easily all cars exceed the speed limit without knowing it.

True that the wagon r could have slowed down. But all intersections prior to this one (toll gate, padalur etc) have barricades. Since there were no barricades, the driver would have forgotten that there is an intersection coming up and kept doing same speeds.

And i don't think that car was over speeding. 100-120kmph, but then its a blunder to do at an intersection.

Here is the link to the accident (Tamil version). As per the news, there were no casualties and the occupants were lucky to survive this horrific accident. The mini van was carrying distilled water cans as per the news report.

That is still not an excuse to be honest.

If that WagonR driver was any attentive:
  • He would have noticed presence of so many pedestrians around
  • He would have noticed the Pedestrian crossing (zebra crossing) stripes painted in "white" from a distance on that "black" road
  • He would have also noticed those yellow lamp posts on both end of the open medians (I can see that and guess they are the same?) even if they were not blinking which are now so synonymous to our dual carriageway roads where you have such intersections or heavy pedestrian/local populace presence

Of course the milk van is to blame too but the WagonR just didn't slow down a bit as if it was simulated crash that happens inside a crash test facility!
