If this need was absent, there will be no luxury homes, luxury cars, luxury hotels, expensive clothes etc.... heck, there is no need for a non productive activity like sport. This "im better than you" is a primeval need, which cannot be curbed by active thought. Hence, unless there is an ironclad law which restricts manufacture of vehicles in the country to do only 80kph ; the "why do we need fast vehicles" question will never get popular support, not because people are stuntmen, but because going faster is something of a primeval need inbuilt into us.
Astoundingly brilliant reply Venky. Very well said, couldn't be put much better. Perspective.

Yes seven people lost their lives. It happed in Virudhunagar. Either the driver dozed off or an over taking gone wrong. The truck has suffered only damages in the bottom part. The upper part is intact. The truck must have been stationary. Looking at the crash, it seems the innova driver was driving north of 100 KMPH. Stupidity on part of the driver. The media is also stating that both the truck and innova were doing high speeds. How can the truck do high speeds?

Don't trust the media on this completely. They just cook up impossible speeds by looking at a stuck speedo needle.

However, trucks can do decent speeds - trucks these days, have around 160hp or higher and at least 600Nm on tap. Good enough to keep cruising at 60kmph or higher with full load. The momentum of a loaded truck moving at even 60kmph is almost ten times that of a loaded hatchback or sedan travelling at 100kmph. The former does not have any crumple zones, so the car will end up in a ball of crumpled metal in an accident. Simple physics.

In this article, it states that

Quote:
Sethur police have registered a case and arrested lorry driver Ramakrishnan of Tenkasi.
When will our police procedures be amended? If the police have concluded that the accident was due to the driver dozing off at the wheel, why would that warrant the arrest of the truck driver?
Having said that, I have also been "arrested" after an accident (single vehicle accident, car hit a tree). On paper - as per police records - after the accident I was arrested and then let off on police bail. Reality was that I went straight from accident site to hospital and then home. Never visited the police station at all!!

Very painful to hear about this kind of accidents: 27 children among 30 killed as school bus plunges into gorge

Quote:
Twenty-seven children were among 30 killed when a school bus ferrying them back home plunged into a deep gorge near village Gurchal on the Nurpur-Chamba highway, about 100km from the district headquarters at Dharamsala.

Himachal Pradesh: 23 kids among 27 killed as school bus falls into gorge.

Quote:
DHARAMSHALA: At least 23 children and two teachers were killed when a school bus plunged 328 feet into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Malkwal, on the Punjab border, on Monday afternoon. Kangra district officials fear the death toll may rise as 11 other children have been injured in the worst school bus accident in the region in recent years. The condition of at least three of the injured children, hospitalised at Pathankot in Punjab, are said to be serious. All the kids are between 5 and 14 years

Supreme Court has instructed Police forces all across India to NOT make automatic arrest in cases until a clear cut apprehension exist that the accused might influence victim or refuse to cooperate with investigation.

In this country, people can languish in jails without an arrest warrant. The main factor being lack of knowledge among public about law, fear of Police and painfully slow judiciary.

This is a country where Police has arrested a person just because he was drinking tea in a suspicious manner.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

I saw 2 accidents on the Hyderabad ORR in the same spot.

March 31, 10 AM: A white Skoda Laura had crashed into the barricade after exiting the Gachibowli toll and taking a sharp left for Airport route. The front had collapsed but the cabin was intact, airbags had deployed. No idea about casualties.

April 8, 6 PM: A grey i20 Elite had crashed and turned turtle after entering the Gachibowli toll and going straight towards Patancheru. The engine was torn out of the car and the car was lying on its roof on the gap between 2 parallel roads. The road to Patancheru was closed by Police. No idea about casualties.

Being just a few metres after the toll most vehicles must have already attained uncontrollable speeds. The bend after the diversion is a very tricky proposition at high speeds and can result in vehicles going off the roads. I myself had a close shave once. Fortunately we were able to control the vehicle at the exact moment. The diversion near Shamshabad to connect to Airport is another such spot.

I always felt that people take this turn too fast for their own good. The lane discipline is all over the place at this point too.The fact that the road dips (albeit gently) fools people into believing they can go really fast.
Add drivers who have unrealistic estimations of their own and their vehicle's capabilities to handle a banked turn and its always a disaster waiting to happen.

The Toll seems to be up to 21 people dead now, with 14 injured.
