This is a nice idea that has been brought up. Good that the Indian Authorities are putting some efforts in learning from the Western world safety features. Only time will show how much these ideas prove as a boon or bane.
However, everything has + and - stuff.

+ves
As stated in the article, it would stop the vehicle crashing over into other lanes, but strongly holding the vehicle in the same line till it comes to a halt.

-ves
Well, as racer_ash stated above, what if the wires cut through the metal sheet of the door panels while its rubbing through the wires during coming to a halt ? And as vivekiny2k says if some soul is nearby, the snapping wires would drag everything into its path including vehicles following the previous vehicle !!

Would we be witnessing a "Final Destination" kinda scene ?

Well these aren't really wires or ropes -- they are fairly thick, so the force is spread over a greater area, making this unlikely.

Highly unlikely that they will break.

From a website :
The TL4 heavy vehicle impacts are performed with a 2,000kg pick-up truck travelling at 100km/h and 25 and an 8,000kg rigid truck travelling at 80km/h and 15.

Any SAFETY device is THOROUGHLY tested in all kinds of situations before making it to the market! (At least internationally )

One thing to keep in mind with wire barriers is the concern for motocyclists - though that's not an issue on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, since bikes aren't allowed on it.

Read my post above.

Not only are the cables extremely strong, but the amount of flex/movement in each nearby post when a vehicle makes impact greatly reduces the stresses on the cable.

Think of it like jumping out of a first floor window onto a stretched safety blanket. If the blanket was stretched across rigid posts, it would be more likely to tear on impact. However, if there are people holding it, the impact will pull them forward and reduce stress on the blanket as well as slow down the rate of deceleration of the moving object.
