Re: Crash Testing in India! The Bharat new vehicle safety assessment program

Maruti Suzuki gets going on the upcoming new safety norms ahead of the regulation norms schedule using their most advanced R&D centre getting ready for the upcoming safety norms and more -one of the most advanced R&D facilities in India and among the top facilities in Asia.

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki India is set to drive a new research and testing paradigm in the domestic market. The country’s largest carmaker has opened a global-scale, state-of-the-art R&D Centre at Rohtak, Haryana, with a total project investment of Rs 3,800 crore.
Crash Testing in India! The Bharat NCAP-tablemaruti.jpg

Five models certified for advanced safety, ahead of norms -Ignis, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, S Cross and Ertiga.

With this, about 75-80% of cars in the Maruti Suzuki portfolio would become compliant to these norms, about a year ahead of them becoming mandatory in India, giving the company an advantage in the marketplace.

Quote:
To meet the advanced safety regulations, each of these vehicles has undergone 35-40 tests during design and development over 3-4 years. Clearly, the state-of-the-art crash lab facilities and proving ground at Rohtak, together with the capability of its engineers, have enabled the carmaker to meet advanced safety regulations in these five models, ahead of schedule

That is some excellent piece of information!

Though the images does not reveal all statistics about tests, the frontal offset test image indicates the body structure indeed took the impact same way as the global spec Ignis took it in Euro NCAP

Good to know MSIL has been proactive on this.

Is that really an offset crash? The front wheel should ideally miss the barrier. A picture from the other side would have given us more details.

Re: Crash Testing in India! The Bharat new vehicle safety assessment program

Wait a minute. Is that 75-80% of the nameplates in Maruti Suzuki portfolio? Because it can't be 75-80% of the cars Maruti sells, with Population control super hit vehicles like Alto and Swift Dzire not in the above list.

Dzire will be replaced by May 2017 and Alto Y1K is scheduled later for 2019.

In a frontal offset crash, it is almost always the co-driver side which is away from the barrier. So for an India spec car, it will be the driver side (right side) that will be hitting the barrier. And the opposite, on a Euro or US spec car. But yes, a picture from the other side can clarify this completely.

Re: Crash Testing in India! The Bharat new vehicle safety assessment program

Maruti Suzuki India working on affordable child seats.

Crash Testing in India! The Bharat NCAP-marutichildseat4835699x380.jpg

Quote:
To help increase the use of child seats, all of the company’s new cars will come with Isofix anchor points. These improve child seat performance considerably by latching the seat onto the chassis of the car. Insiders say Maruti is in the process of getting together a group of suppliers to help make affordable but crash-worthy child seats in India.
Quote:
It’s not that good quality child seats aren’t available in the domestic market. Companies like Chicco and Britax sell some of their best quality seats in India. While these seats provide extremely high levels of protection for infants and children, they are so expensive that most car owners and new parents tend to think twice before purchasing them. Most of the good-quality ones sell for an average price of Rs 24,000, with other more flexible ones more expensive
Quote:
There are affordable ones too, some as cheap as Rs 3,500, but Maruti engineers say most of the cheap ones are of very poor quality and provide little or almost no protection in a crash. Hence, the need for properly engineered ones.

Re: Crash Testing in India! The Bharat new vehicle safety assessment program

Safety norms coming in 2019. Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme was initiated, proposing a New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) — a system of star ratings based on their safety performance.

Quote:
Frontal crash test ratings will be performed at 56 kmph, versus the international 64 kmph. Side impact would be even lower, at 50 kmph. Also, all launches from October 2017 will need to have speed alert beeps when crossing speeds of 80 kmph and 100 kmph.

Ahead of the 2019 deadline, manufacturers will have to choose either to upgrade existing models or discontinue sub-standard production.
Crash Testing in India! The Bharat NCAP-58833686.jpg

Manufactures gear up in phases.

Maruti Suzuki:

Quote:
six models from the Maruti Suzuki range – S Cross, Ciaz, Baleno, Ertiga, Ignis and the new DZire -- are certified to meet advanced safety regulations, including steering impact, offset frontal and lateral collision, as well as pedestrian safety. The Vitara Brezza was the first vehicle in India to be certified for offset and side impact crashes, ahead of the advanced safety regulations mandated by the government of India
Quote:
The country’s largest carmaker says it has been working on new generation platforms, vehicle designs, and increasing the high tensile steel content in vehicles to meet the advanced safety standards
Quote:
The new Platform A introduced on the Ignis, the Platform B christened as HEARTECT and introduced on the Baleno and new Dzire, and the Platform C introduced on S Cross and Brezza are all designed to address the new safety norms.

Each of these vehicles has undergone 35-40 tests during design and development over the last 3-4 years. The crash lab facilities at Rohtak in Haryana, together with the capability of its engineers, have enabled Maruti to meet advanced safety regulations in these five models, ahead of schedule. Over three fourths of cars in the Maruti portfolio will be compliant with the safety norms. Over to October 2017
TATA Motors:

Quote:
We are working towards the fitment of safety features including ABS that will be offered as a standard in all our new and existing models from April 2018 and April 2019, respectively
Quote:
For Tata Motors, the impending regulatory requirements will be addressed through design alterations related to crumple zones, load path and energy absorption. “The mandated safety norms are stringent and would need some real work on several models to make them compliant
Toyota:
It’s a carmaker that for decades was synonymous with safety and quality, with the former an integral subset of the latter.

Toyota was the first in the industry to standardize front dual airbags across all its models with the launch of the Etios in 2015.
Quote:
We have taken a lead on this and noted that though safety fitment comes with an increase in vehicle prices (due to spec enhancement), the customer accepts it over a period of time
Mahindra:

M&M is ready to meet the mandatory crash norms and safe regulation requirements,” adds Wadhera, who insists that the UV maker’s safety mission is not limited to the features that the government has mandated.
Quote:
We also have an extensive product pipeline which will replace few models. Cost escalation will be on two fronts: structure and airbags. And it depends on the design of the vehicle. There may be some impact on the pricing and the affordability of the entry level cars. “We are engaging with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to explore all possible avenues for localization and optimization of technologies

My strong feeling is that Indian auto manufacturing lobbies have scuttled this initiative so that they can continue selling their cut-price unsafe tin cans. This Indian NCAP has suffered so many postponements that it has already become irrelevant. For anyone who thinks that in 2019, an election year, the present dispensation is going to bring any drastic laws, I have a bridge to sell ...

Re: BS-VI emission norms coming in April 2020!

Maruti declares its Nine of its Fifteen models meets the Upcoming Crash tests.

- S-Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Dzire, Swift, Ignis and Celerio models meets the upcoming norms in safety.

- Next Gen WagonR, Alto K10, Alto 800 are in various stages of development to meet these norms.

- Models in question are now - Eeco, Omni and Gypsy
Quote:
These models will likely require substantial re-engineering to be made crash-test-compliant, so the incoming crash test norms could just as likely be the end of the road for these models in their current form.
Eeco/Omni : Will Maruti bring in its global models as this segment brings substantial sales for MS to vacate it?

Gypsy: Maruti is tight lipped on the Jimny (as it could easily bring substantial volumes to this segment, especially if locally produced and exported)

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki has a full-fledged crash test facility at its state-of-the-art R&D and validation facility in Rohtak, Haryana. In the past, the carmaker had revealed that it conducts 35-40 crash tests for every new model in development.

No news about crash testing being applicable to currently sold vehicles - wasn't the deadline October 2018 !?!

Are vehicles like Alto, Celerio, i10, Kwid, Datsun Go likely to clear these tests without making structural changes to the vehicles !?!

Re: Crash Testing in India! The Bharat new vehicle safety assessment program

The last news I heard was this will be mandatory for all cars sold from April/May 2019 onwards. Currently, the testing facilities are being setup(In addition to Arai). However, with elections around the same time, I guess this will be Tom-tomed as something the current government enabled in about a couple of months. Links -
