Sources suggest that the government is planning to introduce the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program.
The Indian counterpart of the NCAP testing that takes place around the world.
The assessment would include mandatory offset frontal crash and side-impact tests. This is great news for the Indian automotive sector, considering we have the highest number of road fatalities in the world.

Of course, this would lead to an increase in the cost of cars, especially in the A and A-1 segment.

This is a very good, and intelligent move by the government, considering how India built cars fared in the Euro Ncap tests recently (link)

It is still not sure if equipments like Airbags or ABS would be made mandatory like in some developed nation.
Experts suggest that car companies would have to bring about essential structural modifications in existing cars to pass the test.

It is upsetting to see how car manufacturers simply remove essential structural components in India to cut down costs. The BNVSAP will ensure such wrongdoings don't take place and car companies provide a safe vehicle to the public.

Prakhar, It was much needed I would say as the Indian manufacturers have been earning benefits at the cost of risking passenger/ driver's safety in India. If this body establishes itself then I think we as customers will have better cars both structure wise and safety wise. Just a few minutes back I came across a post on ABS Vs Airbag thread in which our fellow member said why are we made to choose between a safety prerequisite. I hope the rules implemented by this agency will lead to standardization of some major safety equipment irrespective of variant.

Now, the clever tactics of car makers towards the Indian market will not see any further success and the best part would be that the customer shall be making a more informed purchase decision and ultimately the safety equipment shall also lead to a decline in the mishap rates pan-India.

Nice share. It was definitely needed. An article some time back mentioned about extremely poor safety standards of some of the most popular cars in India. After reading that article definitely a better safety program is required. Car manufacturers just remove important safety features just to reduce their manufacturing cost. Even basic safety features are lacking and the buyer has to shell more money in order to have them.

By this new safety program at least the buyer can have basic safety features if not all. This will definitely improve safety standards and will lessen fatalities.

I think the best way to go with these is like we have done with emission norms. Take the European standards, make some local adjustments and ask the manufacturers to comply with them. Sure some time delays may be needed but car makers already get EuroNcap anyway so they can easily adjust to minor changes and we in India get near EU Protection.

We at Team-Bhp should follow the progress of these notifications, in order to help accelerate them. I, for one, have next to no trust left in corporates in general, let alone Indian auto manufacturers. I fear lobbying about the devilish details, especially the timing and phasing-in periods, that may go unchallenged except perhaps by the courts.

I am not sure if this has been shared before. A great idea for people to buy safer cars would be to have mandatory stickers showing what Rating the cars got during the crash tests. Just like the Star ratings on electical appliances. This will make people indirectly to go for one with better stars. Especially with Auto Makers launching the same car with optional safety features. What would one buy. A zero star normal variant or a 2 or 3 star optional variant.

India’s new car assessment programme set to kick in soon, likely to be called Bharat NCAP. To include two and three-wheelers also.

Bharat NCAP will be more broad-based than any other NCAP at the time of introduction. It is proposed that the features of the programme will remain same for some time.

Bharat NCAP will be a bit tweaked from the Global NCAP crash standard and rating.

For India - A beep at the speed of 80 kmph and loud alert after 100 kmph will be the latest features in cars to check speeding. These features will be required for new cars to get higher ratings on safety parameters under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) starting next year.

How many times during a highway run (at legal speeds) would we require to hear to technologically advanced 'beep sound'? :eek:

I am not sure why the government wants to re-invent the wheel. Model it on the EURO NCAP and keep the crash speeds as it is. They have already done enough research and arrived at those speeds and they work fine even in the Indian context.

The rating system is pretty obtuse as well. So you can be awarded a rating between 0.5 to 4.5 stars for the crash test at 56 kmph. Now consider a scenario where a car scores 3 stars when crashed at 56 kmph meaning it is decently safe. The same car when crashed at 64 kmph may turn out be woeful and unsafe since the crash forces multiply exponentially with increase in speed. Why create this confusion?

Isn't this ridiculous. Instead of making safer cars and having better infrastructure, beep and speed alert is introduced.

Instead, over speeding challans and educating people to wear seat belts will be far more productive.

Technologically advanced beeps are common in the city with chaotic traffic conditions :uncontrol

I simply could not agree more. What really needs to be done is to educate drivers about lane discipline and driving at steady speeds. Wait at a curve on a highway and watch the vehicles passing by. You will rarely find a vehicle holding a lane through the curve. You infringe into someone else's path and instead of slowing down, he also changes lanes so he does not need to slow down, and that has a cascading effect.

Wow! This is really innovative- The 'beep' really is! Just imagine next set of arguments "Hey, my car has a 'beep' feature. It is safer than just having airbags and ABS and that useless crumple zone. All other features work after having a collission while my car's 'beep' prevents the collission itself". I have just come to understand that we might have just invented the best safety feauture at a fractional cost of what other safety engineers have been incurring for about a century now!

I am so much happy for the new BNVSAP be it at 56 kmph or 50 kmph; at least we are seeing a start. However, that 'beep' is useless. Probably a result of lobbying as this will be cheaper to produce and will rake up the safety rating. I wonder if after an accident, someone might claim that he was taken aback by a 'loud alert' at about 100 kmph and his surprise resulted in an accident!!

Do most of the accidents happen above 100 kmph? I hope they have collected some data to arrive at that figure. And I sincerely hope it is not based on eyewitness accounts.

Speed is only a part of the equation, the single most important factor in making our roads safer is the driver him/herself. I wish the government gives an equal emphasis on issuing DLs after proper tests and scrutiny. Safer cars will not make our roads safe, safer drivers will. Centralization of RTO has been pending since a long time, hope they execute it too in the same breadth. All of these measures can collectively start giving fruits by the end of a decade.
