India might move directly from BS IV to BS VI

The Indian Government might move directly from the fourth to the sixth stage (BS IV to BS VI) as it seeks to find a solution to the problem of rising vehicular pollution.

http://www.business-standard.com/art...2501260_1.html

While the oil industry has no reservations about skipping the BS V stage, the auto mobile lobby is opposed to such a move on the grounds that it will compromise safety standards & escalate costs.

It is laughable that the lobby which vehemently opposed more stringent safety norms is now opposed to stricter emission norms and is using passenger safety as an excuse.

While the costs involved in upgrading technology to meet better emission norms are apparent, I do not understand how/why safety becomes an issue?

Can knowledgeable BHP-ians throw some light on this?

Re: SIAM says BS-VI emission norms will compromise vehicle safety!

@satishv1987; That is exactly what is happening. SIAM go hunt for elephants in Siam! What I understand is that our Refineries (with one exception) were not in a position to supply the fuels, esp Diesel. Also, it was the IITK report (authored by Prof Mukesh Sharma) which forced the decision. Mukesh recommended that if our refineries are unable to produce Euro VI fuels (esp Diesel) then it should be Imported. Of course RIL which is exporting in bulk has no problems with Euro VI. Now our sarkari refineries have started producing BS-VI in small quantities. Seems that many refineries will have to be essentially gutted and retooled. Now what we need is a strict check on the 'unofficial' additives being used by many retail outlets.
