Re: More Indian cars face Global NCAP crash tests. Edit: ZERO for all

I think a good start would be to make it mandatory for companies to
  • Publish the crash test result with every ad ( like the mandatory warning on Cigarette packs )
  • A user should be shown the crash test video and a signature taken before he pays the advance for the car

This is the least our government should do. And for all of this to happen, crash test has to be made mandatory first for the cars which are sold in India.

Global NCAP will organize a one-off crash test to demonstrate poor safety standards in developing countries.

Global NCAP predicts a graphic representation of the difference in standard safety features in the two countries, and warns that it’s a situation repeated around the world. It hopes the test will encourage governments to regulate for better standard car safety, prompt large global fleets to be more considerate about which vehicles they buy, and put pressure on manufacturers to voluntarily raise safety standards in all markets.

The two vehicles will crash into each other with a 50% overlap and a combined closing speed of 80mph.

'In Mexico at the moment, there are no crash test standards,' said David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP. “They’ve announced this year that they will apply them, but not to all production cars until 2020.

The manufacturer of the test cars will be announced next week, and is not officially supporting the test – indeed, at the time of writing, it isn't yet aware that its cars are being used. Ward said the test isn't a particular dig at that specific manufacturer, but instead is representative of several around the world.
This test is going to be very relevant for the Indian market. Interestingly, Autocar had a picture of the Kwid under testing for the story.

The American big 3, the Japs and VW has great presence in Mexico and will be holding their breath now. God bless the good souls at Global NCAP. Source

Re: More Indian cars face Global NCAP crash tests. Edit: ZERO for all

Came across an article in today's MetroPlus (Bangalore edition) of "The Hindu". It was regarding GNCAP's plan to do a crash test between two versions of the same car - one sold in US and one in Mexico. This is to highlight the difference in build quality between cars sold in developed nations and developing nations. The article mentioned that both the cars would be base variants.
I did a quick check at GNCAP website. This is what it says:

Quote:
Car to car crash test by IIHS, Global NCAP and Latin NCAP
Nissan Tsuru and Nissan Versa

MEDIA ADVISORY
Global car safety organisations, IIHS, Latin NCAP, and Global NCAP will perform a Car to Car Crash Test, between two popular car models of the same sedan category – one sold in the United States and the other sold in Mexico.
.......
Test date: Thursday 27 October, 13.30 US ET
Link to the GNCAP article

Shoud be interesting to see the crash test results.

Just prior to the results, Nissan announces exit of its model Tsuru in Mexico!

Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) said on Wednesday it would stop production in May of the Mexican-built Tsuru, an economical and hardy sedan beloved by taxi drivers but often sold without airbags and widely criticized for its poor crash record.

Never heard of IIHS before this but it seems they've been testing cars for over a decade now.

Thank you. Very instructional --- in a truly horrible sort of way.

Should be watched by every one who thinks there is no need of the best safety features in car design.

Re: More Indian cars face Global NCAP crash tests. Edit: ZERO for all

The sudden interest in testing Indian built cars is purely a western ploy to restrict business.

Indian cars mfrs. are now the 3rd largest exporter of cars after U.K and Japan.

My favorite car is a Rolls Royce Dawn convertible. RR refuses to get their cars crash tested as it is indirectly means that the mfrs. are liars.

That won't stop any one from wanting to buy the Dawn. If RR says it's safe then it is safe. A "cerpiticket" from NCAP isn't needed.

The graphic revelation of the moments throws up one question - are seat belts of any use at all in such situations ? All the pre-tensioning seems to count for naught !!!

Seat belt is only useful to prevent the driver from shooting forward and hitting the steering wheel (or the passenger from hitting the dashboard). But when the steering wheel (or the dashboard) is hurtling at you like we see in the video, the seat belt can do nothing. That is why the first major contributor to safety is the structural strength, followed by seat belts followed by airbags.

That is why it is sad when manufacturers compromise on structural strength for locally sold cars vs. exported ones.

Re: More Indian cars face Global NCAP crash tests. Edit: ZERO for all

This is interesting as well, SUVs/ Pickups vs Cars. So a Tata Safari or Mahindra Scorpio (not the ones based on new platforms) based on the decade old platform is comparatively much safer than the new age SUVs sold in India? Maybe not for the occupants of the other vehicle involved so it becomes kind of ethical I guess.

But then what about trucks and buses, I know this video isn't about India, but since cars by Indian manufacturers are exported to other countries then they must have also adopted to the new strategy in design where advantage SUV is neutralized to keep the occupants of other cars safe, but here in India the main culprit behind most accidents are the arrogant truck and bus drivers on highway. I just wish to see that someday there would be a rule made wherein their driving cabins will be as low as that of cars, I am very sure that the rate of accidents will fall dramatically.

I don't buy the idea at all. If this was actually West v East you might have a point, but it is not, and the opposite is true... The effect of the crash tests is to give bad publicity to foreign manufactures selling substandard cars in India. It is not good for foreign, it is bad for foreign.

And if NCAP wanted to wreck a RR, they'd just go out and buy one, like they do with other cars.

I think you need a new conspiracy theory there!

I am at a loss for words. The cars (sold in India) which NCAP failed were a mix of Indian and Foreign manufacturer cars, all made in India. It highlighted the shortcuts most companies take to reduce costs here, because the laws are not yet stringent enough to ensure structural integrity of the cars. The videos uploaded in the past few posts highlight the fact even further.

And for some reason, let us even accept your hypothesis that this is all a ploy. Does it really even matter, when the fact that the cars sold here are structurally weak is being exhibited?

Please show a bit more restraint when what you are speaking about are potential life or death determinants. However, if you do have facts to back-up what you said, I would like to be informed.

I am not sure if this video has been shared here previously. It is an old one but features Zest. Even though an actual crash test is not shown, what we do see is the aftermath. Reassuringly, the structure seems to have held up well and even the wheel intrusion does not seem to be alarming.
