Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

Renault unveils the KWID for Brazil. The launchfor Brazil is scheduled for mid next year. It will be manufactured in São José dos Pinhais, Parana, same plant producing Sandero, Logan and Duster

Quote:
Called Renault Kwid Outsider Concept, was developed by Renault Design Latin America (RDAL) especially for the São Paulo Hall. In comparison with the car which is already sold in India, differs by having mixed-use tires, covers the taillights, bumpers more full-bodied, frames and boxes in dubious details fluorescent green.
Quote:
Yet compared with the Indian, Kwid Renault says that 80% of the components of the model will be completely different. Here he will have reinforced structure, not to give the scene's collision tests out there. There's talk of increased weight by about 20% for it.

Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

The differences are out - 140 kilos heavier, stiffened and strengthened chassis, structural reinforcements, increased use of high-strength steel, 4 airbags & ABS as standard, ISOFIX child seat anchoring mounts.

Quote:
Brand Rombo said structural reinforcements were added in high strength steel. This will allow the basic versions of the Brazilian Kwid to be 20% heavier than those of the Indian Kwid. The total weight would increase from 700 to 840 kilos. Only the driver's seat would be nine kilograms heavier than in the Indian Kwid.
In addition, the regional model will come standard with Isofix anchorages for child seats, as indicated by the law. It will also come standard with four airbags: front double front (mandatory by law) and double front side (something that no competitor offers as standard in its segment).
It will not have stability control (ESP). It will be exempted from compulsory for just six months.

I am pretty sure the automobile manufacturers will try to maximize their profits by following country specific standards. Even the Aussie Baleno whose pic I saw had a Passenger airbag off option, whilst India gets a dummy button. The Government needs to put regulations in place; the manufacturers will be obligated to follow. But let's remember, we are outliers. Even these compromised cars offer more protection than entire families which travel on 2 wheelers.

Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

What did you think would happen? Carlos Ghosn would voluntarily offer costly safety technology and features in a market where our politicians and our people couldn't care less if passengers die by the hundreds or thousands?

On the contrary, car companies that add the 140 kgs of equipment suffer poor sales for doing so, as "mileage" inevitably drops with the weight increase. So, in a way, car companies like Renault Nissan, Maruti Suzuki etc. are incentivized to offer less safety equipment. Let's not forget the death trap Maruti's of the 90s and early 00s.

This is a big part of why I only use classic Mercedes cars. No compromise on engineering and I fear for the life of anyone who makes the mistake of crashing into one

Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

I hate double standards such as these. But it is our own golderned fault as consumers for accepting rubbish.
This is a stupid country where people value bling and form over function and safety.
Life is cheap in India and a car buyer will typically always pick some stupid cheap electronic gizmos and features and accessories over safety.
Unless the Govt steps in with a Bharat NCAP or similar and makes safety kit and safety ratings absolutely mandatory, this is not going to change and these miserable manufacturers will continue laughing all the way to the banks!
I which other country for example, can there be a half wit cheap skate variant of a car with One Single Driver Airbag for heavens sake? Except India that is!

Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

Maybe a day will come when some egghead in one of the (struggling in India) auto companies will wake up to the bright idea of using safety as a potent USP and get the company to offer 'at par with international safety standards vehicles' while doing a mass campaign highlighting these features and how much more critically important they are compared to the trinkets normally offered.
An early bird might reap substantial benefits before the rest of the makers catch up.
But it's just me dreaming.

Yep, you're dreaming.

The reality is that these changes only happen when there is a mass movement, a politicians loved one dies due to the cause or they are threatened.

The made-in-Brazil version of the Renault Kwid has scored 3 stars each for adult occupant protection and child occupant protection in the latest round of the 2017 Latin NCAP crash tests.

Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

Royal Enfield has come up with a new philosophy of the save vehicle for all markets with their new 650 twins that were recently displayed for the world market.

In the interest of price sensitivity the lower priced cars tend to loose all safety features that are not essential to pass mandated requirements of each specific market. It reflects poorly on both the brand and also the people (the market itself) where buyers buy these cars that have an engineering compromise. Safety is the last feature that a car buyer looks for in India in 99% of the cases.

We will be served as we demand.

Re: Renault India builds a safer Kwid for Brazil - 130 kilos heavier!

Weight of the car definitely matters. Shame on Renault to have short charged the Indian consumer with a doubtful build quality car.

Reducing weight is also a way for manufacturers to get better performance per ton without investing in R&D on engines to build more powerful engines. Maruti is doing the same with the Ciaz and next generation Swift. Get your R&D right with a strong build quality

I am attaching here the photographs of three Kwids.

First two were sold in India. First one was the first Kwid tested by Global NCAP. No airbags. Body shell: Unstable. Got zero star.

Second one was the improved version. With one airbag. Body shell: Unstable. Got one star.

Third one is the Brazilian Kwid, which is reinforced and strengthened. Body shell: Stable. It earned 3 stars. I inverted the image for a better visual comparison.

All three were tested at 64 kmph.

Till the time Bharat NCAP is enforced, (New Model: 1st Oct 2017. Existing Model: 1st Oct 2019), Government should do this one thing, at least:

Get each and every car sold in the country crash tested.

Make it compulsory for dealers to put a TV screen right next to the vehicle in the showroom.

Play the crash test video in loop.

And then, let the customer decide what he wants to buy.

Special incentives to those dealers who get the additional software, which enables the customer to morph his face on the crash dummy's.
