The passenger compartment of the Swift remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the
knees and femurs for both the driver and passenger. Suzuki showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of
different sizes and to those sat in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of the chest was marginal, both for the
driver and the rear seat passenger. Otherwise, protection of critical body areas was rated a good or adequate. The Swift scored
maximum points in both the side barrier test and the more severe side pole impact, with good protection of all critical body regions. Tests
on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.
However, a geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated poor whiplash protection for occupants in those seating positions. The Swift
has, as part of its 'Radar Brake Support' option pack, autonomous emergency braking. The results of tests on that system are not
included in this rating.

The Swift has, as part of its 'Radar Brake Support' option pack, autonomous emergency braking. The system works at the low speeds, typical of city driving, at which many whiplash injuries are caused and, in tests of this functionality, the system performed adequately.

I wonder if they will use the same quality of material in india bound cars. If this happens, new swift will be a huge success in the indian market.

Some observations -

1) Baleno has identical safety ratings - 3 and 4 stars

2) Move the video slider to 0.45 min. This seems to be a head-on test against non-deformable barrier. The front passenger dummy is now sitting at the back. Note that the front airbags did not deploy either (probably because the dummy was sitting behind)

3) The toddler dummy seems to have grown up. He is now sitting on a front facing seat, along with an "older pre-teen" dummy.

The rating is quite poor IMO! Assuming that India will have the top spec model with even lower safety features than the non-safety pack variant, it doesn’t look very promising.

This is a major downgrade from previous Swift which earned a 5 star NCAP rating if I am not wrong. So I assume that this 3 star rating is for the Swift with 6 airbags and 4 stars for the one with the optional safety pack.

I don't think we will either get more than 2 airbags or the optional safety pack in India since we have Baleno which is in a higher segment does not have more than 2 airbags. This would make the India specific Swift crash rating even lower.

The star ratings, tests and scoring systems get revised over the years. What would have qualified for a 5 star back then would have a tough fight to get a two star rating now. If you see the AOP scores, the new Swift really does a good job of protecting the occupants.

Currently the tests take into account scores for pedestrian protrection and safety assist features as well. There cannot be a direct star rating comparison between years, and also between various geographies. Euro NCAP is the toughest and their star ratings are not directly comparable to others like LatinNCAP and GlobalNCAP.

Just took a thorough look at the report and trying to put it direct and in a simplistic manner.

Kerb weight of 855 kg for the 1.2l petrol version without safety pack, probably we are getting the same chassis. Or maybe the high strength components will be replaced with cheaper ones. Since BNVSAP is coming up soon, so maybe same chassis is coming for us too.

Cabin intrusion is really very well controlled. Credits in their place, Suzuki engineers deserve an applause for this. Fiat 500 also scored 3 stars BTW.

The car tested in Euro NCAP has 6 airbags, defintely not going to be the case for Indian launch, until Maruti decides to go on a disruptive marketing campaign keeping safety at forefront.

I don't think Maruti India will be using the same build quality for India bound cars. But if we observe the trend and the success stories of Maruti, who cares for those safety ratings in India. Even if the NCAP announces a bad rating, still it will be a huge success in India. Maruti knows that fact very well.

The trend changed all too recently, if you haven't noticed.

All of the products launched under NEXA umbrella, and also the recently launched DZire has safety features like dual airbags and ABS as standard, which is so unlike the Maruti Suzuki brand before 2015. Same build quality? Not sure, but they have already started certifying their cars for the upcoming norms, unlike the zero star fleet they had earlier.

Looks like Maruti Suzuki has indeed noticed that the times are changing.

Well, its revised and more stringent. But if Suzuki's own Ignis or the new 2017 Micra can score a 5 means that a better rating is achievable for small hatchbacks. Irrespective of the scene in Europe, when it comes to India probably it may miss a few airbags, ESP etc.

I guess we should delink the upcoming Indian Swift from the Euro tests crash rating and not speculate on its results.

Anyways it will be tested by the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) coming up in October 2017 and rated accordingly.

Suzuki loses one star due to AEB not being offered.

The Suzuki Swift, however, only scored a maximum of four stars with its optional Radar Brake Support pack, and three without; Euro NCAP docked a star for not offering pedestrian AEB.

No need to get excited.

It has been well established that Maruti Suzuki renders step-motherly treatment to its biggest market by having different standards for the Indian Swift and the Euro Swift. The previous Swift (current gen here as on date) also got 4 starts in Euro spec. Indian version got a big zero and its chassis was also found unstable.

I refuse to read much into this NCAP rating of the Euro Swift.

It is only when the actual Indian version of the car will be tested that I will believe in its safety credentials.

You might be surpised that the 2017 4 star rated Swift and even the 3 star rated one does better than the 5 star rated Ignis in AOP for the offset deformable barrier test. And this is the most relevant rating when it comes to the Indian market?

Ignis even has "weak" protection for the drivers chest, but makes up points due to better pedestrian, child safety and much better safety Tech features score.

So, like I said - I feel it's not a bad score for a vehicle of it's price bracket there.
