Team-BHP - Global NCAP launches ‘Safer Choice’ award for carmakers

Global NCAP announced the launch of the ‘Safer Choice’ Award today at Auto Expo 2018 Delhi motor show.

The ‘Safer Choice’ Award will be presented to automakers achieving the highest levels of safety performance for cars sold in India.

Global NCAP says it recognises that some manufacturers have responded to the call for zero star cars to be driven off India’s roads. Three models tested have reached four-star status and others have seen significant safety enhancements from an initially unacceptable zero star performance.

To qualify for a Global NCAP ‘Safer Choice’ Award, a car model must achieve all of the following requirements:

- The model must achieve a 5-star score for Adult Occupant
- Protection in accordance with the latest version of the Global NCAP New Market Test protocol.
- The model must achieve at least a 4-star result in Child Occupant Protection in accordance with latest version of the Global NCAP New Market Test protocol.
- The model must offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and meet performance requirements according to United Nations Regulations UN13H, UN140 or GTR9. Where optional, ESC must be available on all the model variants, sold separately without any ‘bundling’ with other features, and as from 2 years onwards must be a standard fit to at least 20% of the sales volume in the country.
- The model must meet Pedestrian Protection requirements according to United Nations Regulations UN127 or GTR9. which must be validated on market units at a Global NCAP designated testing laboratory.
- Conformity with all of these requirements must be validated at a Global NCAP designated laboratory and by the provision of type approval certificates where applicable

As of today, the highest NCAP rated cars in India include the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Etios and Tata Zest - all three scoring 4 stars in the NCAP test (in terms of driver safety).

I guess there are other cars that have done well too like the EcoSport, S-Cross, Creta etc.

Realistically today, among the affordable segment's cars, I'll be very happy with a 4-star model. We're still a little away from 5-star status due to manufacturer lethargy, costs, lack of public awareness and no government regulations.

I think the report talks about only Global NCAP-tested cars. Among those, Polo, Etios and Zest achieved 4-stars in adult protection, but not 5 as needed to get the "Safer Choice" award. Jeep has 5-star rating in Euro NCAP tests. I think Jeep should take this opportunity to get the "Safer Choice" recognition.

But, my guess is that a 5-star adult occupant rating and 4-star child occupant rating as required for the award will not be possible without side curtain airbags. If so, only one variant of Jeep could achieve the rating. I am not sure if Global NCAP will give the award based on the tests on the lowest variant. If so, for now, I think it's advantage CBUs. Edit: Kodiaq comes to mind as it has only one fully-loaded variant.
