Ford Figo facelift scores 3 stars in Latin NCAP crash tests

The Ford Figo facelift (Ford Ka) has received a 3-star safety rating in Latin NCAP crash tests. The car was awarded 3 stars for adult occupant safety and 4 stars for child occupant safety.

According to the test report, the updated Figo offered adequate protection to the driver's head and chest area in a frontal crash. The protection for the front passenger was found to be good. In a side impact, the car offered good protection to the head and abdomen, but weak protection to the chest area. The report rates the bodyshell of the vehicle as stable.

The car used in the crash tests was equipped with structural side impact members for occupant protection. The vehicle was equipped with dual airbags, seat belt pretensioners, seat belt reminder for driver, ABS, ESC and ISOFIX child safety anchors.

It is worth noting that the pre-facelift model had received a 0-star rating in Latin NCAP crash tests carried out in 2017.

Made in Brazil version. I wouldn't treat this test relevant to India, unless tested.

This being the main difference. Indian Figo was tested by Global NCAP, and while it scored 3 stars, the bodyshell was reported unstable.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/road-...gets-zero.html (Global NCAP crash tests: Ford Figo Aspire scores 3 stars, Chevrolet Enjoy gets zero)

Hopefully the claims by Ford regarding Boron steel etc in the Aspire facelift shows up in a better crash test result for India as well.

So, while the previous version scored 0, this one does score 3. But still, for such a long running, renowned brand like Ford, is it very difficult to develop a 5 star safety hatch? Even the built to cost Toyota Etios developed almost a decade ago managed 4-stars.

Ford can of course build a 4 star rated hatchback in India. VW Polo and Toyota Etios have 4 star ratings.
I hope Freestyle gets minimum 3 stars rating in Global NCAP.
But for the 5th star, the car has to have 'Lane departure warning' and 'Forward collision warning & autonomous braking'. The car has to pass the test where it has to automatically brake detecting a pedestrian dummy crossing a street from behind a blind spot.

Won't the 6 airbag variant score even better or is it inconsequential?

I thought so too. But Ka+ with 6 airbags (New Figo) also scored 3 stars in Euro NCAP.

That's not how it works. 10 years ago, the guidelines for the star rating were very different from what they are today. They are constantly being updated. So the same Etios from 10 years ago will probably score a 0 now.

Yes, looks like the Ford Ka tested did not have these features. Also, the variant with one 2 airbags has been tested. The 6 airbags version might score better maybe?

You are probably right. I do not deny that. But, IIRC, India made Etios was crash tested by Global NCAP somewhere around early 2016 where it earned 4 stars. The model / design was still 6 years old then. Not bad for a half a decade old model.

Etios was tested in 2012 and the structural stability is being mentioned specifically.

No sir. The Ka+ tested by Euro NCAP was 6 airbags and still got 3 stars. UK built RHD version.

Ha, so the additional airbags did not help the cause of Ford Ka. But the version tested was LHD based on the link you had shared. Anyways, that should not matter anyway.

To see the tests for the 5th star, check out this video of the Euro NCAP testing of Volvo XC40. Check from 2:05 onwards.

Summary:
1. Pedestrian impact tests.
2. AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) at 50kmph, 60kmph.
3. AEB of pedestrian crossing road in day, night and from behind a blind spot.
4. Lane departure assist.

It seems as if the Volvo offered its bonnet and the things inside to the Crash Barrier. See how during the crash the bonnet throws itself a little more forward.
