The Toyota Yaris has received a 4-star safety rating in crash tests conducted by Latin NCAP.

The made-in-Brazil Yaris offered good protection to the head and neck of the driver and passenger. The chest region of driver and passenger showed marginal and good protection respectively. The car offered marginal knee protection to the driver and adequate protection to the passenger. In a side impact test, the Yaris offered good protection to the head and pelvis region and adequate protection to the abdomen and chest. The body shell and foot well area of the car were rated as unstable.

The Yaris offered optimum protection to the head, neck and chest of a 3-year old seated in a rearward facing child seat in a frontal impact test. Child occupants were well protected in a side impact scenario as well.

The test car was equipped with dual front airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, seat belt reminder, ABS, ESC and ISOFIX child safety seat anchors. In India, the Yaris comes with 7 airbags as standard across all variants.

Made in Brazil, for the LATAM market.

Although, given Toyota's history with the Etios twins - I would trust them to achieve the same ratings (or better!) in the Indian market as well, if and when tested.

Note that this was a model with 2 airbags version. The one with 7 airbags sold here should get a 5 star rating if all else is the same.

We still don't have test results of India made Yaris. If I am not wrong, India made Yaris is based on Ativ sold in South East Asia and the Ativ scored 5 stars in ASEAN NCAP

With 7 airbags as standard, I expect the Indian version to also score 4 or more in Global NCAP testing

Critical point: body shell and footwell of the car are rated UNSTABLE.

This looks like a major compromise on Toyota's part considering Yaris is an 'emerging market' product. You will never see Toyota's global range like Camry or Corolla or Land cruiser have unstable body shells.

Hope this achievement will also push the sales for the Yaris as seen in the case of Tata Nexon which increased by 20% due to the 5-star rating from NCAP

Revisiting this topic - it appears that the ASEAN verison (which does get a five star rating) also has a similarly unstable bodyshell. The A-pillar deforms in exactly the same way and the roof doesn't stay rigid during the crash. Compare this to any of the stable bodyshell cars and you can see the difference!

I had lined up the Yaris as our next car and I think it's well equipped but not as well engineered as I'd hoped.

Re: Toyota Yaris scores 4 stars in Latin NCAP

The Latin NCAP rating for the Toyota Yaris tested in 2019 under older protocol has been updated to reflect the results of an audit test conducted in 2021. The opening of the rear door in the side impact and the failure of the passenger-side seatbelt reminder to detect certain passengers limits the adult occupant protection star rating to three under the older assessment protocol. This means that the older four star rating for adult occupant protection has been revised to three stars for adult occupant protection.

The result of the audit tests showed that in the side impact one of the doors opened and the passenger seat seatbelt reminder (SBR) was not properly detecting the passenger and therefore failing to warn about the seatbelt use. Consequently, the safety rating was recalculated and it resulted in a downgrade to three stars for adult occupant protection. The 2019 result was updated accordingly in Latin NCAP website.
Press Release

The Latin American Toyota Yaris also now holds a new one star combined rating under 2021 Latin NCAP assessment protocol.
