Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

Telangana Traffic police is testing led speed breakers near KBR as a trial.

I believe it will help people to stop at red light as myself have crossed red line because a lorry or a bus covered the traffic signal.

re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

A good initiative and hope this will be implemented everywhere.

Here's another implementation which would be even better. Hope this is atleast introduced in accident prone junctions/signals if not at all junctions.

Agreed.
Large vehicles block the complete view of the traffic signals.

There have been instances where I have been booked for jumping red-light, when in reality I was following a municipal bus, since I could not see the light, and assuming that the bus-walla would've stopped if there was indeed a red light.

Have been booked twice for the same reason. Bus ran the light and I followed.

re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

Putting LED lights on the road seems like a great idea until they get stolen at night! Jokes apart, this is a good move, and just requires efficient execution to make it work across the country. If not for anything else, at least people who break the signal by mistake would benefit from these.

I've done the same a couple of times, but luckily I haven't been booked

I pass this junction daily at 3 pm, and was surprised to see it on Monday---but it was not operational then. It left me wondering what it was.

But the same evening, I saw this video and could co-relate. I tried looking for it on my way back at 11 pm, but it was not on that side of the road.
I did spot in on Tuesday afternoon, and it was working. It actually turned amber after the car in front crossed, so i stopped, though the vehicles behind me appeared to be upset.

It is a good initiative. I hope it will be placed in all junctions in future. It will be of immense help when large vehicles in front block the actual signal.

Re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

While any such move is welcome, I don't think this has a lot of potential. For one, it'll be useless during the day due to low / zero visibility. And it has limited usability in the dark as most traffic lights are switched off at night.

IMHO, they should install additional traffic lights (or bigger more prominent ones) at junctions where signal visibility is a problem.

Agree with you, but still, another innovative channel for corruption; probably billed each LED strip for astronomical 1 Lakh each!!

After 6 months, this project will be made successful & all over TS, the LED will be procured & adjusted for inflation as well!!

Am I the only one wondering how this differentiates between partial greens like straight, right; Straight & right etc?

Re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

The concept has been implemented in Chennai as well as a pilot project. The ED lamps are connected to the traffic signal and they change colour as per the traffic lights.

Re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

Innovative for sure but not practical in cities like Bangalore. Here, folks, do not leave enough space around you to get out in case of emergencies (e.g. car catching fire or baby needing help in rear seat), how will a person sitting in a low sedan be even able to see right or left, forget ahead. If you leave space in front to see the road, it soon get filled to block your view again.

+1

Instead they should install multiple traffic light poles much before the junction. This will warn the driver about the light status.

Re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

An innovative idea indeed and something out of the blue and out of the box ! Though poor visibility may be a factor during crowded traffic movements, when the LED's could be obscured.

In our muddy, slushy and water logged roads after a heavy downpour, we are not sure how these will work ?

Strictly from a usability perspective, the above implementation along with a count down timer seems be a better idea. Green, Red and Orange scatter more and hence visibility even in day time should never a problem. that is why the colors were chosen for Traffic Signals.

But the poor positioning of signals and vehicles of various height blocking the signal , not to forget signals that don't function only aggravate the problem.

hope such measures make driving in the city a better experience.

Re: Telangana introduces LED signals on the road

Great initiative. Wonder why so many FMs are against the idea. Yeah, corruption and all that but still, a great idea. Hope this is done in many places.

Also, rather than just the stop line, they can co-ordinate the lights even ahead of the signal - helps traffic pre-empt and know whats coming.
