Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

According to a media report, the 14th Special MM Court in Hyderabad has sentenced 6 persons to two days in prison for riding their 2-wheelers on the wrong side of the road. They were also fined Rs. 50 each for obstructing traffic under Section 21/76 of the Hyderabad City Police Act.

The Hyderabad City Police Act has a provision to jail people obstructing traffic. However, the traffic police generally book offenders under Sections 119 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, under which, a challan of Rs. 1,100 is issued.

It has been reported that over 1,05,346 individuals were booked in the first 6 months of 2019 for wrong side driving, which is 115% more than the same period last year.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

Need of the hour actually. I have become tired of seeing hundreds of such offenders during my daily commute. Besides increasing the traffic by obstructing the flow, these idiots also make roads very unsafe for fellow commuters. And what is worse? Their attitude! They forget the fact that their act is cheap and also an offence, but rather they use their high-beams as to intimate other users of their presence. And when you end up against one such moron while in a jam, they usually avoid eye contact and keep looking ahead (behind us), and even when they make eye contact, it is never apologetic - it is more of "what? everyone does this.. you probably would too" kind of a look on their faces.

I would really be happy if this is implemented pan-India and if the 50 rupees fine is updated to 5000 rupees. Use the fine collected to install more cameras on streets to catch more offenders.

Totally agree with you on that. Its much needed in Bangalore and strict enforcement required against auto rickshaw/two-wheeler drivers, who believe they are invisible.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

Oh thank god, finally! After drunk driving this is probably the most dangerous traffic offence. And the best part is that the idiots who drive/ride the wrong way get aggressive when the people following rules object!

But the issue is that the cops will catch the easy targets, the bikes and private cars and let the real thugs, the delivery guys, the cabbies, water tankers and autos go!

Chal, it's a start at least.

Woah ! Great job. Also it should be applied for all traffic violations right ?? Why only wrong side driving ?

Again, my excitement just vanished at the fact that 100 INR is all it takes to get away with any traffic violation !

This is a fabulous move! We really need this to be scaled up country-wide.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

Excellent move. Bangalore cops, please, pretty please start doing this aggressively. It is a chaos in every signal with idiots riding\driving on the wrong side.

Sometimes, I wish that I had bull-bars all around the car.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

People in pune need not worry. Authorities will run out of space quickly if they implement this rule in Pune.I have seen police turn blind eye to these wrong side offenders on so many occasions.

This is the same city where people opposed helmet rule, so this rule is never going to be implemented here anytime soon.

Rather than this, person driving wrong side should be made to wait for 2-3 hours with his bike/car/Bus/Truck/JCB/whatever as a punishment at the same junction and made to educate other wrong side drivers.

They should make that person catch 5 offenders and then leave him once his considerable time is wasted.
People value their time a lot these days, and I hope this will act as a deterrent.

Very common in Bangalore especially two wheelers and autos. They do it even on road with proper dividers!

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

This is a welcome move, why?. Most of the people who ride on wrong side contribute to accidents.

Scenario 1:
Person 'X' is a law abiding citizen and he rides his bike on the left side of the road. Suddenly a person 'Y' who drives his vehicle on the wrong side of the road appears in front of him. To avoid hitting person 'Y', Mr.X tries to move to the right side. There was a vehicle behind person 'X' and it was in his blind spot. Without knowing that Mr.X moves his vehicle on the right side and he was hit by the vehicle which was in his blind spot.

Scenario 2 (Night Drive):
Mr.X drives his vehicle on the left side. As usual Mr.Y who never cares comes in the opposite direction with his head lights 'ON' (Mostly with High Beam). Since the vehicle headlights focus on the left side, the head light from Mr.Y's vehicle blinds Mr.X and he met with an accident.

Most of us are in Mr.X situation and there are lot of Mr.Y's who never care about others. I reside in down south of OMR, Chennai and I encounter many Mr.Y's on my daily routine. I pray to God that one day everybody should have the ability to use their 6th sense.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

Had a heart-in-mouth moment today near ASC College/Lower Agaram Junction signal when an idiot on a scooter went flying past mere millimeters from my car's RHS on the wrong side of the divider (it's a common sight at this junction at all times of the day). Mine and the car ahead ducked out of the way just in time, sparing the idiot his life and our cars precious repairs. I have his quick reflexes to thank (the car driver, not the idiot) for saving me too, I reacted in part on reflex to his move, I wouldn't have spotted the suicidal missile in time by myself.

He was going too fast for any side of the road, forget right or wrong. No prizes for guessing if a helmet was involved

Read this sir, happened today at 12pm, at Hinjawadi with me.

Just got held up by cops in Hinjawadi today for driving an outer state 2 wheeler. My Activa is MP registered. I intentionally did not hand over any documents to him, as I was aware, that my wallet was going to be lighter no matter what I do. I do admit, I still have not paid Road tax here. Just showed him images of all, from my phone.

Now reason for posting here is: while I was discussing my points with the cops, a heavily tinted Swift drove on the wrong side right in front of their eyes. The driver even had the audacity to honk to the cops and made them make way for him. Though I was at risk of increasing my fine I did asked the police officer that won't you be doing anything for these guys who have double offences. The reply I got, really made me regret not having ant video recording device active at this point. The cop clearly told me that "Bade sahab ne permission de Rakhi hai. " (they have permission from higher officer). Mind you, he was not going to the pump. He drove way ahead, beyond pump.

They calculated a fine of 5000 for me, vehicle seizure and appearance in court, which may take upto three weeks to free my activa. Paid up 500 without receipt and moved on. This happened at the Indian oil petrol pump towards Hinjawadi after the flyover.

Completely contrast treatment for same offence in two different cities in same country.
I was just wondering that only thing left beyond this was the officers personally escorting them on wrong side.

Re: Hyderabad: 2-day jail for wrong side riding

So basically 6 out of 1,05,346 ended up in jail.

Thats all I needed to know.

Certainly worth taking the chance ( pun intended )
