Sadly it not the rules that is the issue here. The way they are selectively enforced that is the real issue. (Eg highlighted in post below). Kindof feels like a hogwash for police to make more money.

It was bikers who were arrested and they incidentally have the most to lose in a head-on collision! What a bunch of idiots.

Fully support the move and it should be extended to all serious offences. Wrong-side driving has become a menace even in pockets of South Bombay (usually, a relatively disciplined area in terms of traffic manners). It's become so common that some of these violators think it's their birthright and refuse to move out of the way for you (you, who is driving in the right direction).

Honestly, this is a really good measure but somehow they need to find a way to scale it up properly to catch more people otherwise overcrowding of jails could genuinely become an issue. Then it may come to a point where the Police may be unable to continue with this measure for an effective time period.

Genuinely irritating to see such people go on the wrong lane in the wrong direction, even educated people do it for convenience sake. Sometimes I wish it was legal to put a snow plough like car and just plow the errant bikers out of the way without hurting anyone. Of course that can't and won't happen. (Mods, please do correct me if this isn't appropriate to say.)

In Bangalore bikers have found very good way of circumventing cops who check on ways and wrong side driving. the bikers just get off the bikes, turn it off and just walk as if the bike is not working. Cops also nicely let me them go through and then once they cross checkpoint, start and zoom off. This is common sight on most service roads on ring road.

Great initiative. I hope it gets implemented in NCR too. This should happen especially to those idiot car owners who feel it's their right to come on the wrong side just to save a km or 2 of a U-turn. Don't have a dashcam installed otherwise would have posted how many such morons I encounter on daily basis. Such people have no regard for their own life and others as well. In fact, minimum 2 weeks jail should be mandatory for them so they don't ever have the guts to do it again.

Hyderabad traffic police have been really impressive in the last 1 year with a lot of their initiatives.

1.They are not afraid of booking a lot of celebrities in drunk & drive cases in the night.
2.Hyderabad ORR is one of the best managed roads in the country in terms of both maintenance and speed discipline. People largely stick to the 100KMPH speed limit on this road as there are automated speed guns and even cops who keep hiding with the speed guns across this road.
3.They have been counselling parents of minors who were caught driving bikes and committing traffic offences. In a few extreme cases, parents have been jailed for 2 days.
4. In the last week, they even fined director Ram Gopal Varma for not wearing helmet and riding triples based on a photo uploaded by some citizen on the traffic police FB page.
5. I have seen my uncle getting fined for wrong parking with in 10 minutes of parking. He had to pay a hefty fine. Atleast in core areas, actions on traffic violations is almost immediate.
6. In general in Hyd, at most major traffic signals, people stick to the rules and dont jump signals etc so often.

While I do not say this happens consistently across Hyd and the police are all perfect, I do see that there is an attempt being made in the right direction.

Of course, what helps the case of Hyderabad is, the roads are wider in general and the main thoroughfare through the city has been made mostly signal free. The traffic moves faster when compared to cities like Blr. The one bad area in Hyd is the IT corridor around Hitec City and Gachibowli areas where there is lot of traffic clogging. Even there, one can take slightly longer alternative roads to escape the traffic.

In Blr, apart from driving in wrong direction, the other most common offences I see are, people jumping red lights at will and with impunity and bikers driving on foot paths and abusing the pedestrians for not giving way. The so called zero tolerance zones are a big joke except for may be a couple of them. Hope Blr police learn from the initiatives of Hyd police

Completely contrast treatment for same offence in two different cities in same country.
I was just wondering that only thing left beyond this was the officers personally escorting them on wrong side.

But aren't you at fault too for paying a bribe? No offence meant, but trying to understand if you are ready to break the rule and pay the bribe; why expect it from others?

Let's not get into the repercussion of both the offences, both are traffic rules and you are meant to follow both with same vigor!

Bangalore in fact has some sections where only wrong side is allowed! E.g. from Koramangala 1st block towards Madiwala / St. Johns, the service road is totally used by the vehicles from opposite side. Police in fact regulate them go through as there are no signals for them.

Also, many service roads are two ways while majority are not. There are no proper signs and markings. So, police fine people depending on their mood and need for money, not necessarily on a heavy traffic day. E.g. service road in front of Prestige Tech Park, Outer Ring Road.

I also hope that strict actions are taken against people who park their vehicles on the road, irrespective of whether it is in front of their home or not. Public road must be kept open for public use and not to be used for personal vehicle parking. If this is implemented, more than half the cars will be junked as many car owners don't even have parking at their homes :-D

Great move! Ofcourse 6/100k is nothing arithmetically, but the step itself is to send a strong message. As someone rightly said on this Thread, the bigger turn-off is the audacity of wrong side riders/drivers. These steps are good examples for such defaulters.
