Ertiga:

Quote:
The Ertiga achieved three stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. The Ertiga offers two frontal airbags as standard. Its structure was rated as a borderline unstable performance which can and should be improved. Its footwell area was rated as unstable and pedals displacement showed risks to the lower legs of the driver. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection for passenger was good and driver chest received marginal protection. The passenger pretensioner failed to work properly. Child occupant protection showed poor results for the 18 month old dummy with the CRS installed forward facing while global best practice indicates a rearward facing position offers better protection for this age group. The Ertiga offers standard ISOFIX anchorages. Overall, the Ertiga achieved three stars for child occupant protection. The Ertiga offers standard two Seat Belt Reminders (SBR) in the front seats. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 point belts for all occupants.

Suzuki WagonR

Quote:
The WagonR achieved two stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The WagonR offers only a driver frontal airbag as standard. Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable and pedal displacement showed some risk to the lower legs of the driver. Head protection for adult occupants was good. Neck protection for driver was good and adequate for passenger. Chest protection was weak for both front passengers leading to limitations in the SBR points achieved by this model. Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly for the 3 year old dummy as its Child Restraint System (CRS) broke during the impact and the head impacted the front seat. Chest protection for the 18month old dummy was low despite being installed rearward facing.
Hyundai Santro:

Quote:
The Santro achieved two stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The Santro offers only a driver frontal airbag as standard. Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection was weak for the driver and marginal for the passenger leading to a limitation of the SBR points achieved by this model for the driver. Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly because the manufacturers did not recommend a CRS for the test. The dynamic performance was poor as the head of the 3 year old showed contact during the impact. There was limited protection for the 3 year old neck while the 18 month old received acceptable protection. The Santro offers standard driver SBR but its points were not considered for the final rating as the chest of the driver received weak protection. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 points belts for all occupants.
Datsun RediGO

Quote:
The RediGo achieved just one star for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The RediGo offers only a driver frontal airbag as standard. Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head protection for driver was adequate due to steering wheel displacements. Head protection for passenger was good. Driver and passenger neck protection was good. Chest protection was poor for the driver and marginal for the passenger. The poor protection of the driver chest means that there is a high probability of life threatening injuries. Poor protection for any of the critical body regions, in this case the chest, limits the star rating to one star for the adults. The RediGo does not offer SBR in the front seats and, even if it had, the result would remain a single star. SBR points are limited as the chest is brown or red. Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly because of the contact of the head of the 18 month old with the front seat and for the exposed head of the 3 year old dummy during the impact. The static rear 3 point belts created difficulties in the proper and safe installation of a CRS. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 point belts with automatic retractors for all occupants.

Global NCAP launches the sixth round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results

Source: Global NCAP Official Facebook Page

Global NCAP launches the sixth round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results today with the welcome support of the FIA Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Results for the four models tested range from three stars to a single star for adult occupant protection.

2019 Global NCAP crash tests - Ertiga, WagonR, Santro & Redigo-73253285_2876996285652865_2558719306233806848_n.jpg

The models tested are: the Suzuki Maruti Ertiga, Suzuki Maruti WagonR, Hyundai Santro and the Datsun Redigo.

Global NCAP chose the entry-level version of each model and as a result only the Ertiga was fitted with at least two airbags as standard while the other models offered only a driver airbag. The results highlight significant differences in adult occupant protection in cars that meet the latest Indian government vehicle technical regulations.

David Ward, CEO and President of Global NCAP said,

The latest results in our #SaferCarsforIndia crash tests show a mixed safety performance, and disappointingly, there are no five star performers. The Suzuki Maruti Ertiga achieves a creditable three stars for both adult and child occupant protection, but it’s obvious to us that more can and should be done to improve overall protection levels for cars sold in the market.

“The Indian government’s crash test standards are clearly helping to eliminate any new zero star cars from the market, and we will continue to work with them to ensure the push of regulatory requirements is complimented by the pull of consumer awareness, encouraging the demand for ever higher levels of safety
.”

Suzuki Maruti Ertiga

Suzuki Maruti WagonR

The WagonR offers standard two SBR in the front seats but its points were not considered for the final rating as the front passenger chest received weak protection. It is surprising that this car is not offering 3 point belts for all occupants.

Hyundai Santro

The RediGo achieved just one star for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The RediGo offers only a driver frontal airbag as standard. Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head protection for driver was adequate due to steering wheel displacements. Head protection for passenger was good. Driver and passenger neck protection was good. Chest protection was poor for the driver and marginal for the passenger .

Global NCAP awards a separate child safety rating to each car in order to highlight the different levels of protection vehicles provide to passengers on the rear seats. Global NCAP tests a combination of the car and that Child seat recommended by the car manufacturer. Because the only safe way for young children to travel is properly restrained in a child seat, the assessment checks how compatible the car is with the child seats recommended by the manufacturer, as well as the protection provided in the crash test. The three tested vehicles offer ISOFIX as standard which is a desirable improvement however the different tests showed poor performances of the CRS in terms of child occupant protection. Airbags are not a substitute for seatbelts, passengers must always wear seatbelts.

None of the models offered three-point seatbelt for all passengers. Lap belts in the middle position makes it impossible to properly and safely install a CRS and offers a much lower protection than a three point belts for adults.

Safer Cars For India Campaign

The #SaferCarsForIndia Campaign was launched by Global NCAP in 2014 with the objective of promoting safer vehicles in the country. Between 2014 and 2018 Global NCAP has completed more than twenty-nine safety assessments which have acted as an important catalyst in the safety improvement of Indian cars.

Disappointing figures. I expected Santro to achieve at least 3 stars. Seems like safety will take priority only when BNVSAP comes in and a compulsory display of crash test star ratings becomes mandatory.

Re: Global NCAP launches the sixth round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results

What to say of a manufacturer whose head honcho almost scoffs at the idea of providing cars with better safety, citing economic reasons? I guess the only way to make any awareness improvement is to start public campaigns using social media by groups who do not have vested interests.

So the latest Indian crash test standards (Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program) does not change much in reality except some zero star rated cars will now graduate to one star ratings.

Pleasantly surprised to see Ertiga getting a 3-star rating. I always thought that it will not get more than 2 start (just a feeling). And Yes, BNCAP will just ensure that no zero star cars are around us. It a missed opportunity for BNCAP. A 3-star GNCAP equivalent rating should be the minimum passing criterion.

Waiting for the S-presso to be tested. I am sure GNCAP will be surprised with that.

I am not going to mince any words. The S-presso is a terribly unsafe car. The Kwid also when it was launched was a widow-maker. I believe the upgrade it got made it slightly better. This new segment of ultra compact low value cars have significant safety compromises.

Just to be clear, I don't even blame Maruti or Renault for these cars. They are a company wanting to make money and they will do so with every opportunity they get.
We as buyers need to know what we are buying and what level of safety we can expect from it.

During my discussions with Suzuki guys, I came to know that the S-Presso is minimum 2 star level car if not 3-Star as per Suzuki internal tests. The car was made with an eye on NCAP. They were very well aware of all the flaws in previous and current Kwid. Let us see how they both perform in NCAP tests.

Re: Global NCAP launches the sixth round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results

Pretty much expected results considering the cars in test. So far, the street level logic holds for G-NCAP. What looks and feels strong, is strong. Nexon, Brezza, Zest, Ertiga seem built properly with their body design inherently made for structural strength over pure visual appeal. And it shows in their test results. Cars that visually look light and weak, are coming out with poor scores regardless of their so called modern and high strength platforms with fancy names - WagonR, Swift, RediGo, Scorpio et al. I hope people consider these points when purchasing a car more and more.

What disturbed me the most was that the WagonR's CRS BROKE during test. That could be lethal for a little baby in a real accident. And this on a car specifically sent for test. Not just any random car off a shipping truck from Manesar. Appalling. I hope the results are taken in the right spirits by MSIL and quality control at least in safety matters is given utmost importance. WagonR afterall is one of the highest selling cars in the country. And its in a very new generation, so going to be on sale for a long time in present form.

You should expect a phone call from MSIL top management soon for this line.

Cars are not sent for NCAP testing. They are picked up from market randomly by NCAP.

The stupid me was under the impression that car makers send cars for tests voluntarily also. But then perhaps that's expecting too much from Indian auto industry. At most GNCAP would ask for a sample from a car maker. It can't pick up a random car from the street yeah? Simple quality checks would certainly have been carried out hand-in-glove by the car maker's staff for the particular unit marked for tests. Maybe not. Anyway, I hope this gets fixed. A broken CRS is a huge failure. Especially considering GNCAP is still nowhere the EuroNCAP and tests are quite limited.

We have to be conscious of the fact that quite a lot of the score & stars are achieved purely on paper. Having seat belt reminders, ISOFIX holders, speed warnings, airbags, ABS etc score up a car a lot. As an example, the Tata Nexon went from 4 to 5 stars without any structural changes at all. It just made ISOFIX standard, removed auto door locks and such subtle configuration & feature standardization differences & became 5 star.

2 Stars isn't too good IMHO. If you see the results, cars with 2 stars are with remarks like "Chest protection poor", "body unstable" etc. So what people should look for is at least 3. I'm glad that a people mover like Ertiga has got a respectable 3 stars.

As per the reports, the CRS (or the Child seats) were the one recommended by manufacturers. You can see the different brand of the CRS used in Ertiga and WagonR. Britax Child seats are one of the best in the market globally. On the other hand "Luster" make CRS used in WagonR is Make in India Gurgaon based manufacturer.

Not surprising any of these TBH. All Heartect platform based cars have been rated 'unstable structurally' even earlier. As a whole these ratings don't make any difference in our market as seen in the sales numbers.

However surprised to see the santro too rated structurally unstable. Haven't been in one but going by all the reviews which kept going ga-ga about its build quality, I expected it to atleast have a stable structure

Re: Global NCAP launches the sixth round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results

Can anyone explain who selects the cars to be tested in GNCAP? I was hoping Tata Tiago to be in the crash test list.
I read somewhere that manufacturers voluntarily participate in GNCAP. If so, what motivates the manufacturers with terrible safety level participate and then get humiliating 1/2 start rating? And what does it say about manufacturers who chose not to get their models crash tested?
