Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

1. Driver was over speeding.

2. The flyover has a dip and a curvature means it was hard for him to keep the extra (and extra by going down) speed.

3. It needs a simple speed breaker with a big signs speed breaker ahead.

Not being insensitive to the lost soul or people injured, just curious what kind of legal action can be taken against driver involved in such case.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

We cannot eliminate fools. Fools are born every second. This is where safety in design and fool proofing come into play. As engineers we worry not about fools but about how to prevent collateral damage should the said fool try something foolish. Correct road surface, and a W-beam crash barrier before the hard barrier would have prevented the car from going over, thus saving an innocent by-standers life.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

For people who are familiar with this area, know that this flyover starts at a point where already good speeds are built up by cars/bikes due to the wide 3 or 4 lanes on each side of the divider. The driver of this car must have been speeding up after reaching this wider road from usually roads with low speeds due to traffic. He continued with the same speeds onto the flyover also. Feeling sad for the accident and death of a lady for no mistake of hers. The driver of the car luckily survived, would recover and carry on with his normal life after a while but for the family of the lady it is a loss forever.

I am from Hyderabad and have seen how the place near the flyover has transformed over the last 9+ years. During rush hours, have seen how traffic piles up at this junction and was glad that this flyover is complete to ease out some traffic. Also, with the metro line coming up here (Hitech city - Raidurgam stretch), free passage for vehicles would make sure that there would be no huge traffic jams.

We are in a country where trains are blamed for killing people who are standing on tracks, flyover/road designs are blamed, bigger vehicles are blamed, blame every thing else except for the one who actually did it. As someone stated already in this thread, we do not deserve better roads/infrastructure since only a handful of people drive sensibly. Majority do not have the awareness or follow the rules and do not drive in a sensible, defensive way.

We may be able to stop the fall from the flyover, but what will stop such idiots to kill some other users of the flyover?

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

Any car if driven irresponsibly can become a Weapon of Mass Destruction. A rich kid for his thrill has taken the life of an innocent bystander. Yet opinions are divided on whether the flyover is to be blamed or the driver.

A driving license cannot be a license to kill. Once behind the steering wheel, you are responsible not only for the lives of the occupants but also for pedestrians. This is a simple rule. There are far too many idiots on the roads driving cars they cannot control.

It makes you wonder what is the criterion for issuing licenses in India? Do they have any way of educating drivers on Road Safety, Road Etiquette, etc? Obviously not. Not long ago there was a case of a high powered lawyer in Mumbai, who in an inebriated state drove up the wrong way on the Eastern Express flyover in her Audi and killed an entire family who were in a Taxi. Apparently she is out on bail now.

It is shocking how callous some people are about safety when behind the wheel.

Professional body Structural Engineers World Congress-India vice-president and infrastructure expert Dr SP Anchuri said: “The structure is very strong and durable but when you look at the design aspect, it is very poorly designed. The increase and decrease of speed on a straight road will not affect stability of the vehicle, but when you have a curve and the vehicle is at a speed, the curve goes outwards because of the centrifugal force and there is a huge risk of skidding even at a minimum speed.”

“There are two S-type curves, one after another at a very short distance on the Biodiversity flyover that are very risky. For every curve, there should be a transitional zone, which is missing,” Dr Anchuri added.

Re: Pics: Accidents in India

It appears to me, to add to the 'bad design' of the fly over discussion, that the walls are very poorly designed. The way it tapers upwards (at least, that is how it seems in this video) will easily allow a car tyre, at a reasonable speed, to 'climb' over the wall. If you observe the way he went over the wall, this seems to be the likely cause. Of course, the moron behind the wheel was the primary reason. An innocent life lost. Really sad.

RIP to the one who doesn't deserve to die.
Sadly, that is most likely how things are going to turn out eventually.
Money not only speaks, but also manages to get a whole of things done in this world.

Flyover design may be faulty, too high, no banking, bad surface etc., however nothing can excuse the fact that a slowly driven car would have better managed these faults compared to this.

I hope and pray that justice is served.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

Completely agree. The reason some of the people are criticizing the design is because, a poor design will result in accidents even if people stick to speed limit. A negative angle of banking with cemented roads with regular undulations during rains can send a 2 wheeler skidding in no time even at 40 kmph on such a road. Activas will be even more prone to such accidents.

Why cant we have high tensile fensing to prevent such falls. Should be very cost effective.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

Firstly the driver although was speeding he had the wrong line to the approach of the the turn. He should have been on the left side of the road and cut the apex tight to have made it out of the turn.
Secondly the turn seems to have a negative camber ( negative banking) which is a serious design flaw specially for a flyover. And like someone pointed out the railings are designed like a ramp almost so anything that hits it at speed is going to take off!

Imo both the driver and designer of the bridge should be punished.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

The driver will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital. I hope he goes to jail for the innocent life he snuffed out.

Quote:
A day after the accident at Biodiversity Park Flyover resulting in death of a woman and injuries to four others, the police collected the footages from the closed circuit cameras installed at the accident spot. The police registered a case under Section 304(A) of IPC against the Krishna Milan Rao, who was steering the Volkswagen Polo car which hustled off the flyover. Rao is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

“After Rao gets discharged from the hospital we will arrest him and produce before the court. Our investigation found him to be driving the car at high speed and losing control over it while negotiating a turn on the flyover,” said A Venkateshwara Rao, DCP Madhapur.

A team comprising officials from the Cyberabad traffic police and GHMC will inspect the flyover on Monday and prepare a report about the measures to be initiated to control overspeeding. The flyover would remain closed till the authorities take up measures for speed control.

Very well said sir, its a design flaw . The walls should be flat or taper inwards to avoid vehicles flying and acting like ramp. Many flyovers are tapered upwards now a days.

Re: Massive Polo GTI accident in Hyderabad - Falls off a flyover!

Design flaw of having sharp turn without proper warning sign will not stop such bizarre accidents.

Speeding automobiles is bound to happen in India, but where are the warnings of "sharp turn ahead" to warn the drivers?

Our authorities are never bothered to value presence of sign boards to save human lives.

See below, the same kind of 80 degree sharp turn fly over at NHAI Karur-Trichy bye pass junction at Dindigul , TN. Its a serious design flaw, wherein lots of space was available at the sides. Initially, this flyover was death trap for many drivers who were unfamiliar about this bend. Later after so many series of accident, one involving a famous local politician, NHAI took steps to have multiple warnings signs of speed limit boards, strobe lights, small and continuous speed breakers, rumble-strips, barricades well ahead of this turn are now maintaining safety of drivers.

It has been posted many a times in our forum itself.

Everything you say about the design aspects may be true, and you may well be more qualified to comment on such things than many of the rest of us, but, frankly, it is not that relevent.

Does a person need signs to know that they are exceeding the speed limit for any city road by more than double? They do not. Do they have eyes to see the road ahead? They do.

Was it this driver's first time on that road? That we don't know. But he is a local, right?

By all means, let the signs be improved, and the walls raised if only to protect those below. I think there are barrier-wall designs that deflect vehicles back onto the road? Yes, India should do better at this stuff. Governments are willing to spend the money, but not willing to go the extra and get it right. That does need to change, but probably won't.
