Skoda patents illuminated seatbelt buckle system

Skoda has filed a patent for an illuminated seatbelt buckle system, which lets users know if they have buckled up properly.

If the belt is not secured correctly, the buckle will glow red. On the other hand, if you secure it properly, it will glow green first and then turn white. This feature is very useful, particularly at night, when you might not be able to see things in the dark.

In some countries, the driver can be fined if occupant in the car is not wearing a seatbelt. Illuminated seatbelts can allow the driver to make sure that his passengers have buckled up properly. Users can also ensure that child seats have been properly secured.

Taxis have worn out seatbelts in which one cannot tell if he has secured himself properly. An illuminated seatbelt will certainly be reassuring in such times.

Here’s a video showing some of the innovations that Skoda has filed patents for including illuminated seatbelt buckles.

This is an interesting idea. However, in almost all cars, there is already a seat-belt warning in the instrument cluster that warns if the seat belt is not secured correctly. There is often a chime associated with this warning too so it is not easy to miss it. What does this new system add over that?

What's the point of patenting it?

Re: Skoda patents illuminated seatbelt buckle system

The trademarked feature(illuminated seatbelt buckle system) is still under the final stages of development and is likely to be included in future Skoda cars. Along with this unique innovation, Skoda has filed 94 different patents in the year 2019 which is claimed to be more than any other company in the Czech Republic. As for Skoda’s developments in India, the car manufacturer aims to expand its sales and service network in the country under the ‘India 2.0’ plan. Next year, Skoda also plans to introduce the Vision IN SUV in India rivalling the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.

Re: Skoda patents illuminated seatbelt buckle system

Ok, its important to know if the seatbelt is buckled properly. But we have already a solid feedback of proper Click sound, I can hear it without turning my head and thinking about what color and why!

So in my opinion, I guess it's a patent for the sake of patent with a marketing gimmick to show their focus towards safety.

Yesterday I was watching an Episode of 'James May in Japan', in this particular episode he talks about Japanese tendency to come up with solutions for problems which don't exist, this feels like same pinch.
