Wow, isn't it an entirely different league in terms of commitment to safety? Crashing 10-20-30 cars, dropping them from 100 feet, just to ensure that the professional rescuers know how to extricate the passengers ASAP, which other manufacturer would have done that?

When Ford sold them to Geely, I used to think that the real Volvo will be lost now, but look how well the small Chinese enterprise has let them stand up and walk, run in fact. We haven't seen better looking Volvo cars since a few decades, and now they have taken the passive safety too to another level with this one.
Very true. Volvo has rather been doing much better than before and I believe they have retained a fair amount of autonomy and dont want to upset the Swedish roots despite being under a Chinese corporation. While we know they are very conscious of their brand, I at times feel that they have got to make some India specific marketing campaigns that can help for some more reach among premium car buyers. Especially with the concept of safety being at-least advertised in recent times, Volvo can show people how they have set the bar high and why it is the right choice.

Re: Volvo drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

A quick online calculation shows that an object dropped from 30m would reach 87 kmph at time of impact with earth surface, taking 2.47 seconds to impact. 87 kmph is 75% more than standard Ncap test speed of 50 kmph. Moreover a vertical freefall is unencumbered by any other surface which would impact the crash behaviour, unlike a standard test rolling on a horizontal surface.

This just shows the extent to which Volvo would go to test and achieve safety in their vehicles. Kudos to them

Looking at Volvos in the showroom: "Man, why are they so expensive?"

After surviving a crash in a Volvo: "Oh, that's why"

Hats off to Volvo for investing in their customer's safety!

One question that comes to my layman's mind is, why no test dummies? That would have made the assessment of the rescue more realistic isn't it?

Re: Volvo drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

Great to know that the Chinese owners Geely have kept the tradition alive of making them safe as they used to be. Apart from that I don’t think Volvo has anything exciting to offer to a driving enthusiast, apart from the looks and the safety bit. The entire range of cars share the same 2 liter engine in different states of tune! The engine is suddenly the secondary component in the vehicle! Also I have heard that all of them are now limited to a 180kmh top speed. We don’t do those kind of speeds on india but why not have a machine which is capable of higher? I feel the 4 Germans Audi/ Mercedes/ bmw/ Porsche are not a compromise in safety in comparison to a Volvo but offer far more driving fun.

Re: Volvo drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

I would like to point out that a few years back Volvo's vision on safety lead to a promise - "Aiming for zero" -Meaning that if you are in or around a Volvo, you will not be killed or seriously injured. Obviously relating to all possible and imaginable real world scenarios. That is the kind of focus the road safety campaign in India should have.

Re: Volvo drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

Here in India, to make bus travel safer, Volvo is working on with transport authorities and has equipped its buses with cameras, sensors and logging equipment, which capture the ecosystem outside the bus as well as the in-vehicle environment. This data is processed in real-time as well as offline to analyse and build insights into Indian traffic conditions as well as driver behaviour, enabling drivers to make better and safer choices.

In phase 2 of this project, the bus will be further equipped with radar systems and equipment that monitors weather, air quality and various other parameters. It will also be installed in multiple vehicles.

Re: Volvo drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

Volvo has been a pioneer in automotive safety. It invented the three-point safety seat belt and did not trademark it, consequently allowing all other motor companies to use this technology in the name of safety. On top of all this it also provides advanced passenger restraints and driver assistance systems as standard equipment. In terms of child safety, Volvo came up with the rearward-facing Child Safety Seat in 1972, and further developed this concept with the child booster seat in 1976.

Don’t know if Land Rover was doing the same thing but they suspended 3 Defenders together from a crane.

I think they should also do a frontal offset crash test with a Volvo B7R at full chat! Great work, Volvo! Looks like they're trying to mimic the cellphone drop test!

Car dropped from crane to demonstrate what happens if you crash head-on

Every spring Norwegian councils all over the country working with insurance companies and motoring organisations have these demonstrations. They try to show what happens when you crash at 50 km/hour.

This is mostly directed at kids who have just passed their driving tests. They lift up a car and let it drop down. They use this also to show how important it is to use seat belts.

In real life, these crashes (and the resultant damage) happens in the blink of an eye. But the actual devastation is better observed by filming these crashes with slow motion cameras. Take a look at this one:

And Volvo took the idea of dropping cars from tall cranes one step forward. They crash tested their own vehicles, both from the front and the back - and then tested methods of extrication of occupants using various tools.
