Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

The news just gets better and better for the Car Of The Year 2020!

That's a solid 4 stars - 12.52 for Adult & 41.11 for Child is amazing for what is essentially an open top UV.

In 2016, this had happened.

Even the crash dummy had its hand on the head!

And just look at how much M&M has progressed in the last few years!

This is what happens when one isn't defensive to ideas/ facts from experts in the field and most importantly, open to change. Real Progress! Kudos!

Whereas the top 2 in the market just couldn't be bothered. And they continue to cheat customers who pay top money for their tin boxes with HD touchscreens. Looking straight at you - Maruti, Hyundai & Kia! Watch & learn! And its absolutely appalling that the market and most in media continue to support and reward them.

I honestly hope these bigoted manufacturers will be forced to change! Else, the hardworking brands are just going to lose this battle to lobbying & shifted preferences from insane cost cutting and the market will just be left with abysmal cars in the future!

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

Funny to see Tata and Mahindra taking safety seriously and foreign leaders like Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Suzuki, Toyota, etc. taking it lightly and in some cases completely ignoring it. Good that Indian Manufacturer's working on it hard and giving us the safe cars which are needed in Indian conditions.

Congratulations Mahindra! Hope you will continue this in all models.

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

Kia-Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki need to learn from Mahindra and Tata how to make safer cars for India, its high time! 4 stars for a Thar while the much larger and more expensive Wrangler just manages 1 star, I am impressed Mahindra! I expect the Thar to sell even more now, and rightfully so. I am impressed even in the child safety rating, looks like it’s the highest in the industry at the moment.

Cheers to Mahindra and Tata for providing safer cars and making us Indians realise that Kia-Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are taking us Indians for a ride for a long time and now is the time to change that! I can bet the Mahindra Thar is going to sweep the Car of the Year 2021 by huge margins!

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

It's worthwhile to refresh some of the basics related to GNCAP testing and their protocols.

Quote:
How does Global NCAP crash-test cars?

Every NCAP has its own protocol to crash-test and score cars, and so the results are not interchangeable. Euro NCAP, for instance, conducts full frontal, front offset, side impact and side pole tests. Global NCAP ratings, on the other hand, are based on front offset crash tests alone. A front offset crash test is designed to simulate a head-on collision between two cars. In the Global NCAP test, the car is driven at 64kph and with 40 percent overlap into a deformable barrier which is the equivalent of a crash between two cars of the same weight, both moving at 50kph.

A key point to bring in here is the difference in speed of the front offset test conducted by Global NCAP and Indian regulatory authorities. As per the Indian government’s latest safety norms (applicable to all new models since October 2017, and to all models on sale from October 2019), to be eligible for sale, a car must meet front offset and side impact crash requirements. The Indian government’s front offset test is conducted at 56kph which, though lower than the Global NCAP’s front offset crash test speed, is in line with the United Nations’ Regulation 94 for front impact protection. By extension, and this is important to note, it is possible for a car to meet latest Indian regulations and, hence be eligible for sale, and yet be rated poorly by Global NCAP. So, there is truth to a manufacturer’s press release after a poor showing in a Global NCAP test that the car in question ‘meets all regulations’. NCAP’s requirements for a good score are often superior to minimum regulatory requirements. Also, note, NCAP protocols change every couple of years to include more tests or features.

How does Global NCAP select cars for test?

Mass market models have been the point of focus in the Safer Cars For India initiative. The cars to be tested are bought by the agency from a showroom. Global NCAP uses cars in base trim for the test and the idea is to establish a baseline level of safety a buyer gets even on the most affordable version of a car. Carmakers, however, are allowed and encouraged to send an improved or higher-spec car with more safety features for an additional crash test and rating too. The Tata Zest, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Mobilio have been tested twice, while the Renault Kwid has been tested four times since 2016. In the event a manufacturer is providing a test car, the model is selected straight off the assembly line by Global NCAP as per a strict internal protocol. So far, Global NCAP has conducted 35 crash tests of 27 Indian cars. (See table).
More details on below points are covered in the ACI article shared in below link.

What is Global NCAP?
How does Global NCAP score cars?
When will all cars have a crash test rating?

On a side note, with Thar it's very likely that Mahindra had volunteered to send the test vehicles and they indeed sent their top spec(from what's seen in the crash test image). Mahindra has an in house crash test facility, they would've surely put Thar to extreme tests and were pretty confident that it would fare well and wasted no time in despatching test cars to GNCAP(after going through the protocols laid out by GNCAP of course - either a mystery shopping or picking randomly from the factory by GNCAP ). Indeed a smart move!

Elsewhere at the same time, someone must have been busy preparing their parrots to quip "Our cars meet all safety regulations laid out by the Govt. and that we don't endorse any such testing by an independent 3rd party".

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

Seems like Mahindra hurriedly sent the car to GNCAP in order to boost the sales even more.

All in all, this year was simply fabulous for us auto enthusiasts save for the part where coronavirus sent our trip plans into limbo. With all the manufacturers coming out with more and more competitive products as well as an uproar regarding safety in India, things are getting interesting.

Mahindra Marazzo too scored 4* in GNCAP crash test.

For me the most important part of this result sheet is this :

Bodyshell integrity: STABLE

This means that the structure is capable of improvements and better results. Tata Nexon had a stable bodyshell when tested first time with 4 stars and later improved to 5 stars.

This gives immense potential and scope for Thar & future products of Mahindra like next-gen scorpio, XUV5OO with similar platforms to achieve 5 stars rating.

@Moderators : I see a lot of repetition of same text-content, Images & videos of this crash test result in the posts first few pages. Please take appropriate action to reduce redundant posts with these repeated content.

I don't mean to defend Kia, but would that mean higher models will have a greater crash score?

Especially considering the GTX+ gets a host of additional safety features over the base model?

Fully agreed on both counts - our manufacturers have shown the way by learning and more importantly putting the resources needed to get here. Its upto us to help them now by ensuring that they are the top 2 in the market - till that happens, the job is not done. I saw the leader's defence of poor NCAP ratings in Social media - they highlight how they are the market leaders, no talk about improvement. So till that fact changes they will keep doing the same, ppl like us have to make an effort to change it by moving the conversation towards safety.

On my part anyone who talks to me about car buying, first gets these videos to have a look - esp the child protection ones. Making them watch these videos, getting them to see how the dummies react on a safe vs unsafe car and asking them to imagine their kids or someone important to them instead of a dummy, makes it easier to have a conversation about how important safety is.

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

Kudos to Mahindra & Mahindra for putting safety a priority. With their recent track record, I hope their new cars will be able to achieve good safety ratings. Being an owner of a Mahindra vehicle, I would also like to see them improving their after sales service. Waiting for the launch of new Scorpio and XUV5OO.

Awesome Mahindra !
On a side note, wanted to know of this news release is timed mahindra or the agency itself?
Not a bad time to release the news when the popularity is at its peak.

A tight slap on the face of companies that think, the Indian automotive sector is full of loop holes and they can get away with it without respecting Indian lives!
Heart whelming to see our Indian indigineous manufacturers going that extra mile for ensuring safety of their customers!

Re: 2020 Mahindra Thar scores 4-stars in Global NCAP crash tests

If the recent crash test results don't result in the Seltos losing a bit of its sales and the Thar gaining some, our market is doomed, and Maruti/Hyundai will keep safety at the last of their priorities.

On thar's crash rating, I honestly did not expect it to even achieve 3 stars. Great job Mahindra!

Wish the most selling products from their stable bolero and Scorpio get a new gen model each with similar safety standards.

4 stars with a stable bodyshell. Impressive!

I would personally not care about safety scores if in the market for an off-roader. Nevertheless a good score does give additional peace of mind for the (sizable) chunk of buyers who put this jeep through daily use and highway trips.
