If 6 airbags could not be implemented now, for whatever the reason, why not all necessary security upgrade and Crash safety testing etc be clubbed and implemented together sometime next year. Govt may consider making Traction Control, ESC, all three point seat belt along with alarm etc mandatory. One at a time over short period is not going to help the industry.
We all know it is not only airbag that saves lives. Giving priority to only one is short sightedness. Simultaneously road condition needs to be improved.

Conspiracy Theory: This was never going to happen and they came up with that rule to save Indians from Datsun and their horrible cars

If they can really implement atleast from Oct 1 2023, it will be great. Hope they do not postpone again, and again... like most things.

Is this applicable for all cars? Are only the 6/7 seater cars?

Nitan Gadkari ji should make a solid law to prevent drunk driving first for the safety of the passengers, it will be much more beneficial than the 6 airbag rule.

One more date for a rather good initiative.

This sure again will increase the price of cars all across the variant.

They should also consider making at least a 4-star GNCAP rating compulsory for cars. This will make cars safer than mere 6 airbags.

Re: MoRTH appeals to carmakers to provide 6 airbags | EDIT: Deadline extended to Oct '23

I am assuming this is only for personal vehicles. Commercial small vehicles like Tata Zodha for example does not come with any airbags. In that case cars like Bolero can still be sold as commercial vehicles with two airbags? Is my assumption correct?

Re: MoRTH appeals to carmakers to provide 6 airbags | EDIT: Deadline extended to Oct '23

This was expected and even 1st October 2023 will be a challenge. There is usually a process for any new legislation and in the case of 6 airbags it came out of the blue, was not a part of any AIS or CMVR discussion and a proposed a 6 month timeline !

Adding 6 airbags involves a lot of engineering, especially on vehicles that do not have it on any variant. Right from the proper space in the roofline for the curtain airbags, installation of side crash sensors, the software development and calibration in the Airbag ECU and of course capacity at the supplier end. All this is impossible to do within 6 months.

On the other hand, I am actually not in favour of this rule as it is very short sighted and does not solve the baseline problem first. There is no point putting 6 airbags or even 10 airbags when the structure of the vehicle is not strong enough and that is why the government should focus of the Bharat NCAP first.

The Bharat NCAP will address all aspects of vehicle safety - structural (including side pole impact which can be passed only with side and curtain airbags) and safety assist (ESP).

No other country in the world has such a legislation defining the number of airbags in the car !

Airbag market to grow to Rs. 6,000-7,000 crore, ~2.5-3x of current levels, by FY2027: ICRA

• The mandatory content per vehicle for airbag manufacturers is expected to rise from Rs. 3,000-4,000 currently to Rs. 8,000-10,000 by October 01, 2023

We should ideally see all new models and facelifts coming out from now on to have 6 airbags!

Is the 6 airbags rule coming into effect from October 2023? Or is there a delay. There seems to be some challenges as per this news article "Draft car norms on mandatory 6 airbags, seat belts lapse" https://m.timesofindia.com/auto/news...w/99158876.cms
