USA: Drive drunk & kill someone? You will pay child support

The state senate Of Tennessee, USA has passed a bill, which requires drunk drivers to pay for child support, if they kill the minor's parents in an accident.

According to reports, the convicted will have to make payments in the form of child support to each and every minor child of the victim. The payments will continue until the child turns 18 and has graduated high school.

However, the new bill differs from regular child support. Instead of basing the payment on the income of the person paying, it takes into account the financial needs of the victim's child. Reports state that the courts will determine the amount based on several factors, such as the standard of living the child is accustomed to, their financial needs and the resources of the children and any parent/guardian who survives the crash. Also, if the drunk driver is incarcerated and unable to start making payments immediately, they will have one year post-prison release to start paying the child support amount.

The bill has been called "Ethan, Hailey and Bentley's Law" - names of the children of Tennessee police Officer Nicholas Galinger who were killed by a drunk driver in 2019. The bill was passed by state representative Mark hall and was unanimously accepted by the state's senate.

WARNING - MACABRE CONTENT AHEAD.

Theory of Unintended Consequences.

This might just be urban legend, but, apparently there is a similar law in China where the person responsible for causing injury in an accident pays the victim compensation over the course of several years. It apparently motivates people to kill the victim in the event of an accident.

Knowing how much of a bad rep the term "child support" has in the USA, I am wondering if a drunk person will suspend his/her moral judgement and just go ahead and kill children?

Very forward thinking move . If you're drunk and kill someone, it is no less than murder. You should go to jail and your bank account should be wiped clean. I hope the news of this spreads, serving as a strong deterrent to murderers on the road.

No man, not easy. Maybe in an Afghanistan, but certainly not USA and not China either. Would be a rare case or two.

There was a similar law in Nepal (not sure if it still exists). If you injure a pedestrian, then you will have to bear all the medical costs till the person in fit and fine. If the pedestrian is killed, then you have to pay a fine of Rs.100,000 (this was the amount as of 2008, not sure of today) to the victim's family plus whatever jail term is awarded.
In Kathmandu, back in 2007 when I was visiting my parents during summer vacation, there was a case of a pedestrian being hit by a truck. Apparently, the pedestrian sustained only minor injuries but the truck driver reversed the truck and killed the pedestrian to avoid life long payments for medical treatment.
Also, it was both ways, there were people who came in contact with vehicles to ensure monthly payments.
