Impressive but clever testing of the absolute base model in the side pole impact - would have liked to see how the panoramic sunroof if not the normal sunroof fares in such a test.

Does this matter or does anyone care?
I think this was highly expected, especially after the Thar 2 door crash test.

So it might even be safer than the Wrangler it copies? Hilarious!

It is equivalent to testing in the updated GNCAP protocols. You get to see that the curtain airbags perform well, and the child protection is improved by using new i-Size child seats (the Roxx is i-Size, the Thar is not). Not that the 3-door Thar would fare quite poorly in BNCAP/updated GNCAP due to missing equipment.

Although it is unwise to compare star ratings across NCAPs indeed the Thar Roxx performs better in directly comparable individual tests and also has more ADAS functionalities than the Wrangler does (or at least did in 2018 when it was tested).

The curtain airbags are only covering about 3/4th window glass area. Wouldn't this be a point of concern for shorter height people as their head might hit the sides.

Side impact and full-frontal impact tests should have been done with all sunroof types offered in Thar Roxx. BNCAP has put a tick mark that crash rating is applicable for all Thar Roxx variants without testing top end variants in all tests.

I am interested to see how sunroofs fare in such tests. The front impact on single pane sunroof seems decent and the sunroof did not pop out or crack. Panoramic sunroofs are much sought after feature, and I recall seeing sunroof of Safari breaking in GNCAP side impact test.

Impressive that it passed the car seat installation in the centre seat with the seat belt! That I guess is the safest position for a car seat. When I tried to install the car seat in the centre position in many cars, it was a colossal failure!

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx scores 5 stars in BNCAP tests

Congrats to Mahindra .

BNCAP is fast looking like an examination where everyone emerges a topper! If I look at the BNCAP results page, I see only 5-star rated cars, with one exception (Citroen Basalt with 4 stars).

For the BNCAP to gain credibility, they should cast a wider net and pick existing cars on sale for testing. Start with the Top 20 sellers. Pick the Ertiga from here, a couple of Hyundais and even the Kia Sonet. Tell us how the sales toppers fare in crash tests.

It's interesting to note that every 5-star rating has been given to a domestic carmaker, with Basalt being the only foreigner on the list.

Slowed down the video and one can see something interesting.

Mahindra Thar Roxx scores 5 stars in BNCAP tests-crash-test.jpg

Why is the rear seat thrown to the front in Thar. The XUV 400 (Mahindra XUV400 EV gets 5 stars in BNCAP tests) does not show this character.

The video is not the same duration and the angle is also little different. The sequence after the rear seat collapse (for Thar) is cut off abruptly . Why does BNCAP not standardize the video for all cars ?

Yet both are 5* for child safety. Can some body explain why the rear seat got so much forward?

Good catch! This is a backrest failure and demands attention as it is a risk for forward-facing children and adults.

It happened in the previous-generation Verna tested by Latin NCAP and Latin NCAP called them out for it.

The dynamic child results are based on dummy readings and measurements from the high-speed film, and do not account for failures like this.

- Good one
- That seat can be reclined so perhaps that's the recline mechanism failing to cope up with the impact forces.

And I see the weird "cuts" in BNCAP videos, video standardisation is the only option.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx scores 5 stars in BNCAP tests

With So many 5 star products, I think as 'ahead of the curve consumers', we should start tracking / focusing on the L2 / L3 metrics of safety. Today, this transition feels like what airbags were in 2010 vs 2020 car.

Or we need a stricter rating system.
